Lets just hope that they didn't mess up that press release as it could mean "The newest playstation format the PSP" but what would I know, I'm the biggest messer up of the english language, I don't know anything about fixing it.

The imprecision of the English language as it is, I think it's more likely that "the newest PlayStation platform" in that news release is referring to the PSP.

Yep, that's what I thought initially when I read it.
PS3 isn't the newest Playstation platform, it's the future, upcoming platform

Edit: but there is the mention of "PlayStation Ò" :?
And at least there'll be talk of "Cell" and "Collada", so PS3 will be present in some form.

Yeah, that could mean more than one thing. While it would be GREAT to see/hear about the PS3, E3 is still 2 months off AND the PSP launch is coming very soon. If Sony is not releasing the PS3 until 2006 it would be best to not take away hype from the PSP in the US until as late as possible.

So my guess would be the PSP, but we can hope

No, that comma is exactly in the right place if that sentence refers to the PSP. The comma isn't only used to separate things in a list

The subtitle is "Experts Discuss PSP Game Development, Tools and Technologies, Driving Game Development Into its Next Phase", it's clear there'll be nothing bigger than the PSP there.

But there's another comma right after PSP. There's really nothing to be confused about. It's quite clearly referring to PSP.

SONY TO DEBUT THE PLAYSTATION 3 AT GDC 2005
By Quinton Miles

Sony Computer Entertainment of America confirmed tonight that they will debut their next PlayStation platform at the upcoming Game Developer's Conference, according to the company. Bracing themselves for the largest showing at the conference in their history, Sony will divulge more information on their new platform (which is currently being called the PlayStation 3) along with the PSP, PS2, and new EyeToy innovations they have planned.

"Developers are an enormous part of our success as they drive content and innovation forward, making PlayStation the best gaming experience for millions of consumers worldwide," said Andrew House, executive vice president, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "The Game Developers Conference enables us to collaborate with developers, share with them our vision for game development for new PlayStation platforms, and demonstrate our commitment to the global development community."

This year's Game Developer's Conference is scheduled to take place from March 7-11.

I don't think that's the PS3 'event' that we were lead to believe from last year. If anything it will be about CELL and PS3 and development tools etc. but not the 'event' with the 'fireworks'! :P

oh no, now it'll be reported all over the 'net that PS3'll be shown on GDC
It takes just one little comma in a right place and one illiterate webby"journalist" to start these rumours!
Next they'll report, after they did not unveil the PS3 at GDC, that "Sony has problems with PS3 design: The promised GDC PS3 revealing was cancelled last minute!"

They didn't mess up on anything. It's simple English if you can understand it. First they mention newest console. Then a comma is added after that which proceeds onto the the PSP, PS2, and then the Eye Toy. Not only this, but Sony mentioned awhile back (I'm prettty sure it was February) that they WOULD be unveiling the PS3 before E3. I assume you all must have forgetten about this as well. :?

Would kind of rob the thunder of the US PSP launch, wouldn't it?

What would it gain them to unveil it at the GDC, unless they were going to launch in 2005?

And if indeed we read the full description, we only expect not-very-specific software talk about a general Cell CPU only.

For reference, last year at the Australian GDC there was a track presented by James Kahle(spelling?) about 'next-gen console/technology/something'. Guess whether the world knew anything about Cell/PS3 after that? (OMG! It's one of the Cell big guys! Cell details for sure! PS3 for sure! OMG! )

A PS3 is much more than just just a Cell CPU... GPU? System/bus configuration? Memory configuration?

Technical people tend to be very precise about what is written(As many here in such a carrer can attest). The description speaks of 'introduction to CPU', 'software strategy'. That is what is meant precisely - no more, no less.

Deciphering that quote is not that hard, people. It's in fine print. This was also stated a few weeks ago. I really can't comprehend as to why it has become this difficult for some of you to understand.

Just because the console will be unveil here does not mean much will be shown of it.Hell, maybe they'll just talk about it the way they did last E3. Expecting every piece of info about the next console to be unveiled and in playable/running form this coming E3 sounds kinda silly to me.

Thanks to GamesIndustry.biz, this should officially put this discussion to rest.
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=7214

Quote:
Sony is planning to show off the PlayStation 3 to its key worldwide executives at a major internal briefing next week, it has emerged, but the consumer unveiling of the next-gen platform is still not expected until E3 in May.

Information about the briefing has emerged privately from senior sources close to Sony at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, with several senior staffers from the firm's overseas offices making the trip to the event next week.

However, further chatter among some developers at the show which pointed towards a rather more public PS3 unveiling in Tokyo later this month has been officially denied, with a SCEE representative telling GamesIndustry.biz that "we've already said that the first showing of the next generation PlayStation will be at E3 this year."

Next week's briefing is believed to be strictly for internal staff at Sony, with even the company's closest development partners from overseas not on the guest list. "What I can say is that I'm not going to Japan this week," one very senior PlayStation development source told GI.biz off the record.

What exactly the Sony execs will get to see in Tokyo is hard to say. The final specification for the system is almost certainly complete, and if it is to be shown at E3, we'd expect that the physical design of the hardware has also been completed.

However, whether software demonstrations will be a part of the briefing is another question entirely - but it seems eminently possible, with several well-informed sources at GDC insistent that several of Sony's Japanese partners have had quite advanced PS3 development kits for "a couple of months", with the kits now making their way into selected developers in the west as well.
