I've experienced such with 4.12 betas when I've OC'd my 9550 (back up card) to it's limits, strange thing is, I can set the clocks back to whatever I want instantly with ATiTool (they reset to default on VPU Recovery) and continue gaming like nothing happened. Though if I do that, there will be another report soon etc, I suspect it's because of that puny fan on it (Sapphire), the thing is so ridicilous it would be an insult towards HSF's to call it such

- Hercules R9800 Pro died - Found out that the shop I bought it from had went bankrupt - Called through every single imporer I know in Finland to deal with Hercules cards, the card wasn't from any of those - Dealed directly with Hercules (sent the card to Denmark) - Used Matrox Millennium PCI for a while coupled with Voodoo Graphics - Found Matrox G200 8MB PCI from my computer related closet, got one of my Voodoo2's to use it with from back from my schol - Got new R9800 Pro from Hercules, didn't work on default clocks -> sent back to Hercules - Used G200 + V2 for a while, got GF2 MX(/400) for loan from school - Got new R9800 Pro from Hercules, died after the first time under any 3D stress (started giving artifacts in BIOS & Windows loading screen + desktop) - Used GF2 MX a while - Bought Sapphire R9550 128MB while waiting for another 9800 Pro to arrive - Got new R9800 Pro from Hercules, didn't work on default clocks -> sent back to Hercules - Hercules customer support didn't want me to get another broken card from them, so they offered me a full refund (410€ (current market price ~200€ here in Finland), they'll also possibly cover my expenses on shipping the cards to them, which makes 50-60€) - Been using 9550 ever since, still waiting for the cheque/check to arrive, it's been around 3 weeks now I think (called them last wednesday, and was told that the info has been sent to their accounting department, but it might take quite a while for them to process it, since the normally don't do refunds) - Ordered ASUS V9999 GE 256MB, hopefully the cheque/check will arrive soon so I can finally get it. I was first planning to get it from the shop directly, but now since the cheque hasn't arrived yet, I called them and asked them to send it via post instead so I have more time to get it (it was the last one they had). The card should arrive to post near me right after christmas I think, and then they'll hold it 2 weeks before sending it back - that's how long I have time to get the cheque.

I haven't had as much time to play with the new drivers as I'd like, but no major issue amd I haven't heard/read of any major increase. I have heard of alot of VPU recovery issues with HL2, but that's more a result of HL2 IMO. And of course stable OC'ing levels will change from time to time with new drivers. I the past I had a severe case of the VPU Crashes after an update, I needed to disable Fastwrites to fix. Then after doing what I should have done (update chipset drivers and MoBo BIOS) I was once again able to run with FW on. Could be that the new Catalyst conflicts with some other un-updated systems. Anywhoo, could be a bunch of things, but nothing I've experience. I haven't given them the work out I'd like to (Too much work+Univ+Xmas planning) to know for sure, but there are a few things that can cause this.

When new drivers cause crashes on overclocked cards, the reason is usually because the driver's efficiency has improved such that the card is now running slightly too hot. Less commonly, it can be because some change is causing stress on a more thermally sensitive part of the chip.

I just built a system for my friend with a 9600XT and I was getting crashing in every game.
Once I disabled Overdive it was working fine. Pissed me off for a good hour or two though. |

Good old R9600 Pro clocked beyond XT speed. Only one VPU recovery crash in period of 1 year. Running fine with 4.12...

My 9600 in my notebook overclocks from 300 to 440
Too bad it's just massively, stunningly memory bandwidth limited by the 64MB of 128 bit, 230MHz DDR. It is totally stable even in a notebook's testy environment and construction. I even use the latest Catalysts by letting the DHModtool hack them for me so I can install them. Though I did fabricate a stunning tiny copper heatsink with my dremel and a lot of filing |
