Default What kind of HDR in Carmacks next Engine?

Well, I know that Carmack is implimenting HDR in his next engine, but will it be true HDR (128bit floating point), or "MDR" (Unreal Engine 3, FarCry, supposedly D3 engine)

Rev, do you think that this would be an interesting enough question for JC?

I don't think any cards can do a 32bit framebuffer currently, but John Carmack did say in his Qcon2004 speech that he has to make predictions for the next few years as well...coupled with the fact that he basically tells the IHV's what he wants im sure it could be an option in game

I didn't know the amount of bits define whether or not the engine has "true HDR" or not

Well "full precision" HDR is 32bit framebuffer or 128bit color. I think...

"Not all cards cards support FP blending" perhaps?

I think he means a 32bpp framebuffer, tho I don't know if >8bpp is nec'y for HDR (mainly FP blending, AFAIK).

Yeah I meant 32bit per component..

Well HDR means "High-Dynamic-Range" so i think for true hdr you'd need greater than 8bit per component, however i'm not sure though...correct me if im wrong?

I believe Far Cry v 1.3 renders to a 64 bit floating point buffer in it's NV40 implementation of HDR.

He's much more likely to respond to a respected individual such as yourself who runs a very popular website, than some peon like me...

I'll give it a shot though...

Then why should Rev respond to you in the first place?

Or hell, why should anyone? Peon.

Guys, give the guy a break.

XxSMXx (your username is annoying to type in full, do you know?), sorry if I appear pissed with my previous post but what I have been trying to say (in other threads where you're involved, as well, in case you didn't get it) is that :

1) you should be more confident. Email John yourself. As long as it isn't along the same theme as "Hey John, what is your favourite colour?" then you shouldn't be afraid to possibly piss John off. I've pissed him off before, and he actually basically expressed this to me, but I'm a persistent bastard. An arrogant SOB as some of you say I am.

2) if the reason why you're posting questions here that you can email John yourself is because you're "afraid" of pissing off John and, subsconciously, you think pissing off some folks here is OK, then your "method" is wrong and is one of the main reason why I don't like the majority of your posts. Being afraid to piss off John should not have more importance than pissing off folks here. In case you don't get it.

1.) Ok, email sent off...hoping i'm going to get a reply

2.) I didn't really have the intention of pissing you guys off, it's just I really wanted answers to my questions, however I didn't realize being so persistent would piss you all off. I will refrain from asking questions more than once and not being so "pushy" about answers.

Think of it this way: if you didn't deem your Qs worthy of JC's time, and Rev submitted such "unworthy" Qs, then JC would probably cease responding to Rev, putting us all back at square one.

Well, except for the favorite color guy. Surely JC must have a script that auto-replies, "The infernal fires of Hell on Mars" (aka Ferrari F50 red).

I think my Question is a good one, its just if he sees an email from "Ashraf Eassa" asking about HDR, versus "Anthony Tan" asking about HDR. Which one do you believe he will open (first or at all), and which one do you think gets the big 'old delete key.

I'm not saying JC is a big-headed person or anything, but I look at it from his position. If i'm trying to code the next step in graphics technology, and i've got this guy who is an extreme fanboy of me emailing me about something which to *me* isn't that hard to impliment at all, but for the guy emailing me is a big deal, will I likely respond or just press *delete* and get back to my work?

Besides, he's already been gracious to answer two of my questions, so if I were in his shoes i'd want me to leave him alone.

My point is, Reverend is big in the 3D website industry, and is friends with Carmack. I'm just a relatively young person who bears absolutely no significance to the industry whatsoever. To Carmack, me or my emails are NOT that importat, even if my question was a good one .

Yeah, but what has Anthony Tan done for JC lately?

Anyway, it doesn't hurt to try. If you try and he hits DEL by mistake, *then* it's time to bother Rev incessantly.

1) He and I are not friends.
2) I was a no-namer with a insignificant website called "3DPulpit" when I sent my first email to him (using my handle and not my real name!) and he replied (it had to do with 3dfx's T-Buffer).
3) I am still a insignificant no-namer and is most definitely not "big". That title should rightly be associated with Dave right now.
4) AFAIK, John does not identify email sender's name with interesting email subject headers or email content.
5) You are too afraid to piss him off. God is pissed at you, however, because you are not afraid to piss Him off instead.
6) John Carmack is not God, of course.
