What's going on here? I've already installed the game, played it for days. Why the FVCK is it validating its piece of snit files now for all of a sudden when I want to play the fvcking game?! It's taking for-fvcking EVER for it to finish!

A couple possible cases:
1) Your computer/Steam has crashed after your latest playtime and it's possible that cache files and/or some already extracted material are corrupted - Steam needs to do a re-check to see if this is the case. 2) You've bought retail and new HL2 updates aren't 1:1 with the HL2 Steam version update. This causes the incertainity of the real content of those files and re-check is in order. 3) You haven't defragmented your hard drives in a very long time causing the cache files to "break" and only way to make sure caches won't disappear to oblivion is to re-check 'em (and rewriting them to HD). So, defrag your HD after the unlock is over this time and see if the problem ever comes back. |

No, that's all bullshit.
Besides, disk defrags are all invisible to any/all normal application programs as they shouldn't bother with disk access on the raw sector level.

WORD!
I'm not even going to consider buying it because "YOU NEED TO BE CONNECTED TO PLAY IT!" .. why? What if I dont have a internetconnection? Why in the hell should one be connected to internet to play a game? Not going to buy any of these games ever. |

I had to disable my LAN service before steam would go into offline mode. It refused to do it otherwise, logging out from my ADSL service merely made it hang.
Dang, this is simply too much, I shouldn't have to jump thru so many hoops, this is unacceptable. Of course other game publishers will start using equally draconian measures in their games now that valve's pioneeering the way, then follow on microsoft, and then we're all screwed. Forgot to pay your Longhorn subscription? BWAA HAA HAA, then forget about booting your box as well until you give us a credit card number! What a load of bollocks... :?
