Over the hotspot, not the gaydar reference

There are accents in every language. In Hindi we have different accent every 100 kms or so.

Sweden has quite an extreme amount of dialects also, I would think it's right at the top of the list of #dialects/capita. Just a bit of useless information...

We have a population about the size of NYC or London spread out on an area of California roughly, but a trained ear can pinpoint exactly what town you come from with quite some accuracy. Even towns 30km apart... Personally I have the worst dialect in the nation apparently, as claimed on a national TV show("Värsta språket" for us swedes).

I don't know, but it doesn't seem quite so severe in America for instance, but it may be because(even probable ) my ear isn't trained enough... I can discern some american accents quite well, but more in a general area sense like states, if we cull away those that really stand out(boston, brooklyn, jersey, et.c.). Especially the mid-western states are very hard for me to tell a difference.

Heh... Try that in a country that is smaller than Sweden, has almost 60 million people, and the same dialect/accent/distance ratio...
It's all good, adds to the character of a country i think.

Yeah, I know of the plethora of UK dialects, that's why I didn't use it as an example, besides, you're 8 times as many as us.

I love the different british accents, btw. I use to try and learn to pick them out whenever I watch british TV... So, I get bored sometimes, sue me!

Finland has 7 main dialect areas, and they are further divided making the total dialect about 29.
Those "sub-dialects" do not often differ that much. For example I could reliably tell maybe three of the eight different subdialects from the area I've born.
But the main dialects can differ so much it can be hard to understand what the other is saying. I find it almost impossible to understand some south-west areas dialects, as they would my mid-finland-eastern dialect.

And no, I don't usually speak any dialect, but I often notice that when I speak with someone who speaks either the dialect where I live now, or the dialect where I was born and raised, I start to use some of that dialect with them too.

GAH don't remind me about the local girls... their gaydar is about as successful as pre-wright brothers planes.

The populated areas of Canada (ie: Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, to a limited extent Edmonton) all have bland 'generic' North American accents, ie: typical North American television voices. However, go up north and then suddenly it sounds like Fargo :P The only area of Canada I know of to actually have a distinct dialect is Newfoundland.. yeeesh, that's not even english!

What do you call the generic north american accent? The one most american TV shows/news announcers have? That's the accent I have. (I'm from Indiana, but the upper tippy-top left corner....10 miles south of me is where the accents start, it's weird.)

Yeah, that's what I would catagorize it as. Ofcourse, to the Brits or other such folk, we probably sound pretty funny... :P

One of my friends from University was a Geordie (from Newcastle in the North East of England) and they have a very distinctive accent.

I normally don't have problems understanding the various British dialects of English but I must admit that when I went up to Newcastle to visit, I could barely understand a word that my Geordie friend's Grandfather said! I mentioned this to my friend who reassured me that he himself:

"Can't understand what the mad old bugger is saying most of the time either!"

Aw, I was hoping I'd learn what slang term brits use for americans.

"Yankee" is the only one I know that comes readily to mind, what is a meaner one?
