Default HELP!?.. is my TFT slowing my 6800U card down?

Just got myself a BFG 6800 Ultra and it's great! Just when I think my system is all setup and spot-on, I get another problem... my TFT screen!

I get tearing on the screen, I guess this is due to the response time of the screen, if I enable V-Sync it gets rid of the problem, however it loses me 20,00 Aquamarks!... If I run Aquamark I get 70,000 marks but with V-Sync enabled it goes down to 50,000 markss.

I'm just wondering if I should get rid of my TFT and go back to my old monitor so that I don't have to enable V-Sync and lose performance. However I don't really want to part with my TFT, it's an 18" Compaq TF8030 and cost me quite a few £££'s...

Any ideas/comments would be appreciated. I mean the TFT looks nice on the desktop, but if I'm not getting the most out of my 6800 then I guess it's got to go.

Do like me so you don't have to choose

1 TFT monitor for reading/browsing (all 2d) and 1 CRT monitor for gaming.

You're getting 'tearing' because you have not enabled V-Sync, not because of the TFT.
Note that because the TFT probably wants a 60 Hz refresh rate, you should enable triple buffering if possible. This will keep give you better overall performance whenever the scene is complex (and takes longer that 1/60th of a second to render).

You haven't really lost anything. All that is probably telling you is that either
  • aquamark's images are relatively simple and always take less than 1/60th of a second and thus the card is sitting idle. It won't matter if you have a more complex game. and/or
  • You need to enable triple buffering so that the buffer swap and rendering can be desynchronised

The performance you loose enabling V-sync is not a problem because you have no advantage from frame-rates higher than your monitor refresh rate anyway - atleast when using triple buffering. The performance lost is just numbers not gaming experience.

Yep, Vsync off benchmarking, but on for image quality. Unfortunatly, Nvidia drivers only provide triple buffering when an d3d application specificly calls for it; so for the majorty of d3d games which don't have the option and all opengl games you will have to do without triple buffering and may need to go without the image quality provided by vsync.

This should not be the case, the screen should accept any refresh that is within DVI spec (162MHz pixel clock, as I recall). 1600*1200 is possible at 60Hz, but 1280 - which is a much more common LCD native res - should work at 75Hz at least, and likely 85Hz.

However, due to the properties of LCD screens, more blurring might occur at higher refresh rates, but I noticed no difference on my (now somewhat old, and deceased) Dell 1702FP. It's not really any point in using higher refreshes with LCD screens anyway IMO, it mostly just burns additional video memory RAMDAC bandwidth...
