Default Refresh rate

hi all,

I think theres a bug with the Ati Cat 4.6 drivers. Reason being, is say the refresh rate is set to 85Hz. All seems well. However, try rebooting the PC but disconnect the monitor's cable to the video card. Boot up normally, and then reconnect the cable after windows has loaded. You will notice the refresh rate is set to 60Hz (the sceen flickers alot) even though it tells you it is still set to 85Hz when you look at the display properties.

To fix the refresh rate, you will have to set it to another refresh rate, and back to 85Hz again.

If the monitor is disconnected or switched off when you boot Windows, the refresh rate will always be set to 60Hz. As for the display properties being wrong, I couldn't say whether that's Windows or the Catalyst drivers.

Have you reported it?

well it certainly shouldnt be set to 60Hz when you reconnect it again (provided it was set to another resolution before).

I'm not saying display properties is wrong, what i'm saying is after i reconnect the cable, the monitor refresh rate is set to 60Hz regardless of what you set in the display properties.

I haven't reported it yet, but i will soon...

Yes, because you've disconnected the cable, so you've stopped the graphics card setting the requested refresh rate at boot time. Switching refresh rates allows the card to set the required refresh (as it asks for a new screen rate).

You can try forcing the refresh if you have some reason for booting without your monitor connected.

I'm sure my monitor's refresh rate switched to the correct refresh rate instead of 60Hz when i did the same thing on my nVidia card.

How do you do this in display properties? (without using 3rd party software?)

Its actually quite useful feature in case you change a monitor for example. It doesn't force monitor to use refresh rates that it can't handle.

At least a few versions ago, cats fudged monitor refresh rate when updating drivers. My refresh rate is set to 100Hz, but after updating cats it dropped to 85Hz(might have been 60Hz) even though monitor settings still showed 100Hz. The fix was to set refresh rate to something other than 100Hz, applying and then setting it back to 100Hz.

So the refresh rate setting in cats is NOT completely healthy.

The refresh rate settings for windows are generally stored for a combination of graphics card mode and monitor. If you disconnect the monitor whilst windows is booting up, then it cannot detect what monitor you have connected. I think that if you go to the monitor tab and choose to manually select the driver for the monitor that you can get the behaviour you seek. But as Mendel says it is handy to have the mode reset to 60 Hz in some cases.
