yeah I saw this here: http://www.ps3rumors.com the day before yesterday but decided not to post it because I thought it was obvious that next gen console CPUs would be using SOI technology.

hm... 50W heat dissipation.... how big of heatsink/fan would be good for that? I don't know how big they should be since I've only seen heatsinks for a P3 866, t-bird 1ghz, and a 2800+ (in life, personally).

Could they get away with a giant heatsink?

It's not just consoles... A lot of today's PowerPC stuff in computers are using SOI... The FX/GX series 750s, The 7457/47 in my laptop, and the 970/970FX...

Sheesh, trust the xbots to toot a lot of horns over this... PPC970 has been using SOI from day one and it's not near 3.5GHz.

Actually, from a blurb at...I think Ars Technica, it seems the 970's scaling difficulties is mostly due to the speed it was developed at, with less hand-tuning that is generally the case with modern microprocessors of this class. Once the innards are suitably shifted around on the die, ramping should take off nicely again.
