Default Sound Problem

I'm getting poor audio quality from my Sb Live 5.1, and as i can't buy a new sound card right now (just bought a new car) I wonder if anyone of you knows of a program/driver/plugin for winamp/sonique that "cleans" the audio.
I'm getting hiss, some noise and my highs are "a bit" distorted (don't know how to explain that, it seems that they go out of the audio spectrum). I'm using WinXP

BTW, do you know what happened to the "CMSS" feature? It was on previous drivers but I can't find it now. It was a very good feature, it worked well with stereo movies.

Thanks.
