Default Time to upsize your PS3s HDD - free stuff on PSN (PS+)

Just dropped those, amongst others, free games in my basket:
Motorstorm Apocalypse
inFamous 2
Little Big Planet 2

Wow, 3 ace titles, even somewhat recent for free .
Guess I cant hold off buying a bigger HDD any longer, the shuffling around with 40GB gets tedious.

I've already had to delete some 30 PSN games from my 320gb HDD. With the promise of at least 1 new "blu-ray digital copy" a month I'll have some hard decisions to make soon. First one was easy, deleted the ones I had completed or that were so old they had no trophies.

What do you mean by free games ? PS+ only ? EU or US ?

US has the same, yes. I just realise I don't have Infamous 2 yet and it works with Move now so better put it in my queue at least.

Just got a discount code for Hydrophobia. Buy it for £1.19, so I'm downloading it now (1.8Gb)

IMHO, i2 DLC (The vampire one) is better than the regular i1 and i2 campaigns. I enjoyed it quite a bit despite it being just a side story. Perhaps it's because the experience is more condensed and less "draggy".

Yeah, pretty awesome, would recommend it to anyone. I played it to a about 90%, think I got stuck a bit on a difficulty spike.

Yeah InFamous games are soooos good.

it's a bit of a bummer for me as i've bought almost all these games already, but i guess its still nice to have digital versions of them I can d/l to my HDD.

I think I'm seriously gonna have to think about upgrading my HDD again though, as my 320GB one has only 20GB free. Some of the games are like 15-20GB d/l, so I think I'm gonna look for a compatible terrabyte drive.

Deus Ex: Human (Something or other) this month. Would never have bought this, but I love it. Not so keen on the shooting bits (as I hate FPS games as a rule) but the other parts mark it bearable.

I have it ready to play, but not started yet. Will definitely give it a 'shot' though. Otherwise very likely would never have tried the game.

Deus Ex 3: HR is AMAZING!

Protips though... expand your inventory to max as early as you can.

Also, even if you want to be a non-lethal stealth dude. Make sure you carry a powerful lethal weapon with you (e.g. SMG or shotgun etc) and ammo.

I made this mistake when getting to the first boss and the game nearly became nigh on impossible to progress. I just managed to fluke through him in some stroke of serendipitous luck.

In the words of Boris Johnson on the London underground, "... don't get caught out!"

Yeah, I'm repeatedly hearing that the boss-fights are the game's biggest weakness anyway.

Found the first boss "Barrett" easy. just had some painkillers before and shot him in the face continually after he punched me, he was dead shortly after the second punch.

I am going to upgrade my HDD. Is there anything I should be aware of? Is there a limitation in the rpm of the HDD the PS3 can accept?

There is a size limitation, at least there was one. I'm not sure if it's still there. A quick search shows people who have successfully upgraded to 500 GB and 750 GB.

There aren't that many hot 2.5" drives, but heat is the only factor. The hotter your drive, the harder your fan will have to work. If you have a Slim though I don't think there's any 2.5" harddrives that can run too hot, the chance of your PS3 making more noise has to be weighed against how important you find speed. There are 7200rpm drives out there obviously so they'd be faster, and also 1TB and beyond works apparently. There are plenty of threads out there with tips. I used PS+ to backup the digital saves I wanted and started clean the second time, because while backup restore works (though it can be very slow sometimes - some people thought theirs had faulted out, but it could stop progressing a single percent for hours, and then start moving again). But I liked to start fresh and have no regrets. Fills up fast enough again.

I dont think speed matters, unless you jump straight to a SSD. the PS3 really doesnt benefit much from faster drives.
I recently plugged a WD5000LPVT into my console and it works exactly like the way slower 40GB model.

I think measurements from Df prove you otherwise though, showing a clear advantage to 7200rpm drives. If anything then while an SSD does provide a real benefit, it's not nearly as much as for a PC, so it's a relative waste.

I had some DF articles in mind, but apparently my memory aint the best. the verdicts seems to be that the lower latency of 7200prm drives/SSDs help a great deal, but faster transfer rates dont.
