Dave, can you comment on Winzip 16.5 not offering the OpenCL-checkbox on other-than-radeon cards? I know it's not your product, but that of Corel, but Open Standards and Vendor ID locks don't seem to be a very good fit, right?

Thanks Dave, I was afraid you'd say that.
AlexV, That's possible, yes. But I'd rather think they should've shown the checkbox greyed out with a hint as to why it is not available. I'll check which ones are Radeon-exclusive anyways.

I wonder why nobody benchmarked Winzip 16.5 yet. It's probably the most widely usable GPGPU application to date.
Anyone know if it will work on Intel CPUs with the AMD ICD? |

To be honest I'd be more interested in WinZip people saying exactly what it is they're doing, as opposed to "OMG GPU COMPUTE IS TEH FAST!!!!", because it's likely to be clever, if it's not snake oil or some low hanging fruit. Their bread and butter is hardly trivially parallelisable to begin with.

Alex, doing compression on an individual dataset might not be (trivially) parallelisable, but one possible use might instead be to search for the best method to compress a particular data set. I don't know what options are actually available in winzip, but if it's anything like the options in PNG compression, they could be trying out N different settings at a time and just using the GPU to measure the effective compression of each option. They wouldn't even need the GPU to output the compressed data, but merely count bits.

Wouldn't a discrete GPU be limited by the host interface BW, anyway? Compression of large file volumes is often I/O limited -- both RAM and storage. An IGP solution would probably fare better here, exploiting the benefits of the tight integration with the CPU's memory sub-system.

On E450, OpenCL usage actually slowed compression down compared to CPU-only.
