MSI received the bad board today, got an email confirmation on it. Now let's see how long it takes them to get a replacement board back to me.

Video card RAM seems to have to be able operate at incredibly high temperatures these days since reference designs often use the same heatsink assembly to cool memory and the GPU itself. I wouldn't be surprised if this causes a lot more component failures than in the past, especially considering the rather monstrous signalling rates these memory chips use...

Received an email today saying that it'll take 10 working days to turn the 570 around, with either a repaired board or a replacement coming my way. So I'm probably looking at very late Feb or early Mar. Works out to about 3 weeks total, which is fine with me so long as the new board works fine.

Meh. I'm not impressed as I replace my customers' products via cross-ship, next day contingent upon in-house testing to determine warranty/non-warranty. Of course when I have a customer down it could cost $10k per hour so they expect a bit more.

Can't say I'm 'impressed' either, since the board will be out of my hands for half the time I've owned it by the time I get one back.

I was pretty happy with the way Evga handled my RMA a while back. Once they got my card, they shipped the replacement the next business day. I had changed the cooler in the card, and felt that my actions caused the card to break, so I was really happy to get a new card back, even if the replacement doesn't seem to have as well overclocking GPU as the first one had.

Just got an email from MSI's RMA service, a board is on its way back to me (no idea if it's my board repaired or a new one).

5 day turnaround...better than they said (better to make the surprises good).

7 days, they got my old board on Monday (Valentine's).

Edit: and the fuckers are shipping it so slowly, UPS picked it up on a Wednesday and I won't get it until the next Tue.

One of the things I like about WD's RMA process is how they seem to always send the part back via 2nd day air. This makes even their non-advance RMA very quick.

Got the replacement board tonight, so far so good. Here's hoping it lasts longer than two weeks, especially with DA2 coming out next week.

I didn't check the serial # before slapping it back into the case, but they shipped it in a retail box with all the accoutrements so I suspect new.

And the new replacement board lasted exactly one week before it started showing the exact same problems as the original. And here I was doing to dive into DA2, but kind of hard to enjoy a cutscene heavy game when everyone has polys sticking out of their faces and asses.

Wow.

Assuming it's not a bad PSU or something that makes two of us that are two for two on crap Fermi boards.

I can slap anything else in this system and it works just fine. There are even more Newegg reviews on this board with others having the exact same problem. And 12 hours later and not even a reply from MSI's tech support.

Is it a reference design?
Do I see a 6970 in your future?

I'm not sure, never really looked over the ref boards for the initial reviews. Plus I'm at work, board's at home.

If you have space in you case and are looking for something else, then the Asus GTX 570 (or 580) Direct CU 2 is a pretty good card. Better components, excellent cooling performance/quiet and almost the same price as reference cards.

The lack of trilinear filtering with aniso on the 5870 is why I ditched.
