Default Friend needs upgrade from Gforce2 pro

Ok I have a friend who I took pity on and gave an old card to about 1.5 years ago. He has my gforce2 pro (32MB one).

In any case he wants a new card but he wants it cheap. He buys too many consoles (like every one (every console that is)) and big HDTV's so he has no money ... in any case he wants a new card and asked me what to get. I find it a kind of dilema.

Should I reccomend a ti4200 for $79? That seems reasonably cheap and will get him closer to modernized although it is a long shot from even a 9600pro.

How do the crappy fx5200's perform? I mean they are really cheap, but in comparison to the 4200 how do they do?

Then there is the 9600SE I am not really sure what that card even is I will look into it

You gotta laugh at that

Anyway suggestions are welcome, and he will be waiting till after NV40 and R420 launch in the hope that it will further press prices down.

OH BTW he does game on the PC, in fact that is pretty much all he does, but it is mostly older games and he is a cheapskate in regards to PC.

You should post the system's specs of your friend computer because him buying a Radeon 9600 SE on a 3,3 v agp slot will not work.

Yeah, my bad

He has the cheap leadtek Nforce2 board (so no soundstorm and stuff).

He has 2600+ (I traded mine to him for his 2500 since he don't overclock).

120GB HD
512MB ddr3200

I guess that is all you need to know really.

edit:

DW that has to be for something else man, I mean the 9600 128MB is more expensive.

Everything is alright, then. He can pick whatever he want without voltage restriction.

I'll go for a TI4200 (minimum) or/and look for a used Radeon 9500/9600/9700 wich are better value IMO.

That 4200 sounds good, provided it's 128MB.

Dig, I've heard the 128MB 9600s OC better than the 256MB ones. That may be reason enough to save $10 and go with 128MB.

Poke around some of the "For sale/trade" boards, I picked up a GF4 ti4400 not that long ago for $50us shipped...I'm pretty sure you should be able to find a bargain right now. (Pre-next generation card release time is usually a good used card shopping time. )

Well DW, that is too much work for me, but I will suggest it to him. That was a great deal btw but I doubt it is typical .
