Default Radeon 9800 XT SmartShader Competition

Today we’re launching another competition at Beyond3D – this time, up for grabs is ATI’s current latest high end board the Radeon 9800 XT 256MB. As many of our competitions though, you’ll have to work for it!

Along with the newly released Catalyst 4.2 drivers ATI have released a SMARTSHADER plug-in tool and SMARTSHADER scripting instructions to us so users can create their own SMARTSHADER effects. To win the 9800 XT you must design and script a shader and submit it to us within 3 weeks.

Along with the competition details we also talk to ATI about these driver effects and how they are achieved.
" At swap time, just before we perform the swap operation, we do some processing work on the back buffer. Most of the time we allocate a temporary buffer and perform the effects there, but some effects like greyscale don't depend on neighbouring pixel values, so we just perform them in place. "
Click here to read more of the interview and the details on how to enter the competition.

We'd like to announce the Winner of the Competition as Federico Bianco Prevot with his "TV" SMARTSHADER. You can download this winning SMARTSHADER and the other entries here. Congratulations to Federico.

Looking forward to some awesome entries from you guys!

Very good chance that if the winning shader is really cool, I can slip it in to the generic CATALYST driver releases in the future. (With your permission of course)

Why? Do you think you will do a clean sweep and win both the titles? LOL

I HAVE to! Ever since my son helped me bench the 9600 Pro in his system and he saw how much better it is than his GF4 ti4400 he's been bugging me to upgrade, and if I upgrade him I'll just have to upgrade his sister's rig too. (Just wait until you have kids, you'll understand then. )

I'm wondering if I can enter this. I could always use a 9800 XT.

(Just kidding!)

I put that song on my MP3 player and played it on the speakers in my cubicle with the volume cranked up. Maurice just laughed when the first notes came out. I got the feeling he'd heard it before.

Default Re: Radeon 9800 XT SmartShader Competition

After reading the part about cheating with smartshader, it looks like the gaming community is acting like crazy RIAA executives. Why? Because they both criminalize people who have, or make, a tool that may be used for illegal/illegitimate purposes. There are legitimate uses for see through drivers, such as 3d modelling, which also allow people to make game mods faster, since not all tools have see through features. If they are so concern about people cheat in an online game via drivers, they should not be playing with people who can't be trusted, instead of harassing every video card maker to put some kind of DRM to dictate what you can or can't do with the hardware you already own.

In the end, it is ironic to see that people that are vowed to protect civil liberty can be driven to destroy it, by simple change of circumstances.

Smartshader as peer-to-peer networking? *rubs eyes* Ga-whaaaaaaa?

I get what you're saying, but I don't think that many people are making a big deal out of it. I wonder if NV will implement something similar; that would be comedy gold.

Hi,

I'm from Israel, and I wonder if this competition is international,
I have some background in image processing so I have some ideas for very cool effects. So, can I enter the contest?

So wait, I'm sad, this doesn't appear to function at all on my 8500. The built-in ones work just fine, but the other ones are much cooler.

Terms and Conditions: Only one entrant will be accepted per household. No employees of Beyond3D or ATI may enter. Graphics board is received as is and no warranties are supplied. We may choose to entries and ATI may include the winning entry in future driver revisions so entries should be submitted with this in mind. These terms and conditions are in no way definitive and may be subject to change!
Say only one entrant that means only one person does that mean we can submit multipul shaders? If so what are the rules around it?

A timer is available in the SMARTSHADER scripting language, as is a frame counter.

Remember that SM will have an effect on the performance.

Definitely. I'm wondering how much it will be. Measurable, certainly, but it's hard to guess how much without trying it.
