Default World of Tanks closed beta

The guys in my spaceship guild are nuts for this game World of Tanks. I've been playing it a little and have discovered that I'm terrible at it(like most games).

Here's a quick way to get a beta key = http://www.shatteredcrystal.com/inde...world_of_tanks

Here's the official website = http://www.worldoftanks.com/

Played it a few hours since Thursday , I thought it was rather good pretty good mix between realism / arcade. Graphics are fairly good, Tanks look particulary detailedthough I cant get it to run smoothly when viewing over most of the map, if 1080p I get same fps as in 720p with settings lowered. But I find the whole Experience / Money grinding addicting as in most multiplayer games these days

If u have played Blitz 1941 and if you sort of liked it, then you'll love this one, specially since it has removed design flaws of the previous.

No sides/teams to choose, so there is no intentional team stacking where one side is easily overpowering/skilling the other and constantly maintaining supremacy. Battle locations and players are random, but considers what class of tank you have to keep things balanced so light initial tanks dont end up in battles with much stronger types.

I have no idea if in the future they will implement some type of private battles. I hope not otherwise there will be allot of people exploiting that to farm rewards.

I snagged the open beta. I can see I have a lot to learn about researching and upgrading, which is kind of a pain if you just want to kill some tanks. I hate starting off with little piss ant tanks. All I can do is get blown up it seems.

Yeah there is a fairly steep learning curve.

On the bright side, teir 1 & 2 battles are actually amongst the easiest once you get the hang of whats going on.

Being in a Pz4 vs an IS3 is no fun.
Being a IS3 vs a Pz4 is fun though (that fun doesn't last long though)

Can you automatically earn new tanks via experience, or do you have to purchase them? I'm still using a tank I started with, along with some upgrades. Now I'm wondering if I should just save up for a better tank?

You use XP to research new modules & tanks.
You then need to purchase the module or tank with Silver.

There are 2 types of XP, Free XP and the per-tank XP.
Each round earns you both types (Free XP at a much lower rate)
Free XP can be used on any tank so you can save it up to skip tanks you don't want or to start a new tank with some upgrades already.
The per-tank XP can only be used on the tank you earned it on but once you've researched everything on that tank the tank becomes 'elite' and further XP earned can be converted to Free XP with Gold (25 XP per 1 Gold)

Some tanks can be purchased with Gold but generally aren't said to be good value for money by those who tried them.

New tank slots cost 150 Gold, otherwise you'll need to sell a tank to free a slot.
The tier 1 tanks can be easily gotten rid off asap but later on probably you'll want to keep some of the ones you enjoy/make good profit from.

Also at least once you've got them trained up you'll want to send crew back to Barracks and downgrade tank modules before selling them.
Crew can be retrained to 75% for 20,000 Silver (plus a portion of current % eg from 100% on old tank to 90% on new tank) or to 100% for 200 Gold each.

Getting crew to 100% is very important for the performance of the tank & 75% helps a lot.
When you're just starting out with teir 1/2 tanks 20,000 sounds like huge money but later on that can be only about half the profit from a decent round.

How do you earn gold? I've got some, but no idea how. I need more to purchase some armor piercing shells.

During Open Beta you get 250 gold per day for free. (has been 150 per day in closed beta except we got a couple of weeks at 500 per day over xmas)

Once the game goes live we'll have to buy it with real money (paid game) or survive without (free).

I'm playing this on a phenom II X4 with integrated graphics (HD3200 I think). 17-20 fps FTW!

Seems like it's not multithreaded either, judging by the task manager.

Yeah, apparently the game engine they have does support multi-threading but they haven't implemented/enabled it yet.

So I just started playing this game, pretty good! The grind seems pretty intense though, 80k for a new tank and about 2k per battle.... Am I doing something wrong here? Thats 40 battles per tank upgrade. Sounds a bit steep

Took about 300 battles to grind the KV to research KV3 & S-51.
KV sometimes gets to beat up on small stuff,ie biggest best tank ambling round the map one-shotting whatever it sees but vs the higher tier stuff it gets smashed pretty easily.

Oh wait, 80K silver? I make 45K fairly easily with the S-51.
Higher tier stuff tends to make more cash per battle & some sweet-spot tanks can rake in the cash really easily.

I'm about 70K XP into a 168K grind from IS3 to IS4 & thats after I fully upgraded the IS3.
Then IS4 costs 3.5million silver to buy once I'm done.
I have similar size grinds for most of my tanks now.
Only 80K XP for SU152 -> ISU152 but there is 50K of gun upgrades I haven't got yet

Some careful attention to the sharing of modules across vehicles within tech trees can help make things not so bad eg my Tiger, Tiger II and Panther all have the same top engine & its also used in Panther II and JagdTiger which I don't have yet

I've currently got 14 tanks, 6 are lower tier ones I've kept because I like them.

I highly recommend AT1 with the 57mm gun. High rate of fire, good accuracy & can penetrate armour of stuff much higher tier than you.

I'm using the panzer ii right now, grinding to get the panzer iii.. I really want to get the maus cause it's really big so I wanna stay on the German tech tree. But I'll check out the at1. Im hoping for the final game they have bigger battles, like 64 tanks would be awesome, and reduce the grind. I could see it getting tedious after awhile

PzIII is pretty nifty.

Good speed, has some staying power & I quite liked the HE gun on it.

There is supposed to be 30 vs 30 coming but I haven't actually heard anything on that front for a while.

Problem with reducing the grind is what happens when everyone has Maus & IS7?

Anyone know how those towed artillery modules work? Can you deploy one in addition to your tank? Or am I not understanding WTH that thing is?
