While browsing the quite great indie games news site www.tigsource.com, I stumbled upon a great tool, Sculptris. This tool is basically a, albeit simplified, alternative to Zbrush.
Site: http://www.sculptris.com/ The tool is Windows only, it's protable (no installation required) and weights a light 3.2MB. It's obviously nowhere near as feature complete as Zbrush, but it does a competent job as far as modelling and painting/texturing go, the base feature of Zbrush. It won't replace any tools for professional artists, but it may come in quite handy to programmers looking to to create some high poly meshes for some rendering tests. It can also be a nice tool for penny-less art students. And for the credits part of the post, it won't be long, since Sculptris is the work of a single Swedish CS student, Tomas Pettersson (His site ). Props to him to offer that for free.
