Default [PC] Metro 2033

Looks very promising!

Quote:
Set in the shattered subway of a post apocalyptic Moscow, Metro 2033™ is a story of intensive underground survival where the fate of mankind rests in your hands.

In 2013 the world was devastated by an apocalyptic event, annihilating almost all mankind and turning the earth’s surface into a poisonous wasteland. A handful of survivors took refuge in the depths of the Moscow underground, and human civilization entered a new Dark Age.

The year is 2033. You are Artyom, born in the last days before the fire, but raised Underground. Having never ventured beyond your Metro Station-City limits, one fateful event sparks a desperate mission to the heart of the Metro system, to warn the remnants of mankind of a terrible impending threat. Your journey takes you from the forgotten catacombs beneath the subway to the desolate wastelands above, where your actions will determine the fate of mankind.

Whats the deal with that weird wall corner effect @ ~38s in the tech demo?

Its sort of climbing up the edge as the camera is panned and more of the edge is revealed.

I think I might be quite interested in Metro 2033. This dreary stuff works well on me.

Very impressive for a first project if they have built the engine from scratch. I would have to agree with felix and say the illumination model is incredible and dare I say 'state of the art'. Looks like the target platform could be at least PC DirectX10?

Apparently the lead programmer and art or game director from STALKER are working on the game. There was some talk that when they left GSC they took the engine with them (I guess GSC didn't like that and threatened legal action). So I guess this is based in part off the original STALKER engine. Looks much better than any STALKER game though.

Any source for this? Not that I don't believe you, though.

I don't have a link but I remember it being talked about a lot on the GSC official forums. I have no idea if it's true or not though.

No but I assuem it will support atleast upto DX10. And the visuals together with animation etc gives it a remarkable CGI look. Love how the gun moves and enemy movement and al lthat other pant ripping stuff.

I'm looking forward to this one. Have they said anything about the release date, except that it's coming Q1 2010?

It's using PhysX, I wonder though if it has exclusive effects when set to highest setting (made for Nvidia).
Need for speed Shift used PhysX but it didn't have any exclusive effects for Nvidia users.

Some new info (thanks for link "user542745831").

http://games.on.net/article/7836/Met...-_Technical_QA

Some interesting bits from technical interview about Metro 2033.

Be sure to read the whole interview!

Quote:
We focused on a few really basic things. For example, even if you don’t enable hardware antialiasing in the game, everything will still be fully antialiased – maybe not to the extent possible with the full hardware support, but still antialiased.

This is done mostly by morphological analysis of the scene. We run a lot of compute shading, where we analyse the scene before it is shown to the user. It’s done every frame, and we can correct a lot of small inconsistencies before the user sees the scene.

games.on.net: What are the system requirements to run the game at full detail for a PC user, everything turned on, at 1680 x 1050 resolution?

Olez: At that resolution, the last generation of high end hardware – a single GPU NVIDIA card - will suffice. The new generation of cards from ATI... With these you can turn everything on, with image enhancing features such as...

games.on.net: What are some of the tricks your AI can do – we’ve heard it can smell. How does smell differ to say, hearing?
Other bits like tesselation used for characters, linear multi-core/GPU scaling for CPU and Nvidia GPU (ATI on the work) aswell as HW PhysX support (cosmetic). Sounds like a new champion on the works (based on visuals and gameplay videos)!

ames.on.net: This game is a cutting edge PC game. Was it hard to squeeze these visuals on to the Xbox 360 as well?

Olez: Yes and no. Xbox is a fixed platform, you have all the access to the hardware and you can do a lot of cool stuff way, way cheaper than on PC. So the Xbox’s graphics quality is not of a low quality PC, it’s actually better than a middle-range PC.
What does he mean with this?

Also, I would like to now what are his mid-range PC specs which is bettered by X360.

It is interesting that with almost every multiplat. title all the PC gets is pretty much nothing but more IQ, and in somes cases PhysX if Nvidia gives them enough marketing money . Seems like every multiplat. dev out there manages to squeeze almost everything they want to run fluidly enough at 1280x720 and all the PC gets is up res'd/AA+AF version . PC gaming nowadays is, basically, high res. console gaming...
