Since I'm getting rid of my desktop I still want my 20+ Gigs of music, files and videos. I don't want to put them on my laptop but rather a standalone HDD that can be plugged into my router and accessed by my laptop wirelessly. Clearly I don't need any thing very big probably a 40GB or maybe less.

No experience of using one of these myself but I'd have thought that this is the ideal product for your needs:
http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=0&pid=377 Although it would be separate from your router you'd be able to put it somewhere convenient.
