Default Well, I finally did it

I finally bought an Xbox. Since the Nitendo 64, I haven't owned any console. But now I bought one next to my PC's. Of course I buight the DVD kit and Halo with it. I must say Halo is one hell of a game. Tomorrow I will round up my latest review and start working with help from another developer on a new site engine. This one won't be for Beyond3D only.

But back to the Xbox, both Microsoft and Nvidia did one hell of a job with this console. Shame it doesn't sells well in Europe and Japan. But I know things are going to change. I will have a meeting soon with MS members, who are responsible for Xbox life.

Now back to Halo, can't seem to get enough of it....I started at 19.00 hours and it's now 22.30. Maybe the weather has some impact on me: it's to hot to do anything here in Holland.

The controller is much better than the PS2 controller. But it is not made for children, it's bigger than the other controllers. Xbox is generally not made for children, opposed to Gamecube.

Well, the box does blend in with my other stereo components and as I have pretty big hands, this controller is perfect for me....

tried both US and Japanese Xbox Pad, prefer the Japanese one.

As to the GameCube being for Children, I won't enter a war in here, but it's not the case.

Well, I'm 30 next year and I'm quite happy with my Gamecube.

I would have bought an Xbox except for 2 reasons:

1) It's a big, ugly machine - whoever designed that wants to be shot!
2) No Mario on XBox :P

Is design so important? I would say a xbox fits better together with a VCR (under the tv) than a PS2 or Gamecube.

Xbox is actually green as are the controllers.

Personally I find the controllers very comfortable with the best analog triggers on a gamepad yet. Xbox is aimed at twenty something males and the size of the gamepad reflects that.

Yeah, the box is big and ugly, but you must not have tried the new controllers yet. They're awesome. Far better than the PS2 (which I own also). Best Dpad since the Dreamcast. I sold both my original controllers and replaced them with Controller S. MS should just stop making the original ones b/c S is equal or superior in every way. They feel so good that my hands go through withdrawal when I'm not playing.

That's a silly conclusion. I actually like the regular over the type S. The type S is cramped and the layout of the buttons and so on doesn't suit me. This is because we're not the same people and have different needs. In other words, just because it works for you doesn't mean it will for others.

Sorry to hear that. Probably something wrong with your hands then.

Err... I for one have large hands (being a rather large guy, this is no surprise). I find the original Xbox controller to be the more comfortable then another pad, S controller included.

Maybe there is something wrong with your hands.

Saying S is "superior" was hyberbole on my part, but I do think it is an improvement over the original, even for people with larger hands. The dpad is the best since the Dreamcast, the four colored buttons are better spaced for people with larger thumbs, and the concave indentations on the top of the analogue sticks are larger, giving bigger thumbs better fit and traction. While S is smaller than the original, it is still noticeably larger and fuller than PS2, GC, and DC controllers. Whether the placement of the Start/Pause and Black/White buttons is better is debateable, so I won't bother. Trigger feel and placement is also a matter of opinion, but both are very good. S's ergonomics (distinguish b/t size & ergonomics) are no less than the original, and imo better than the Dualshock 2 and GC.

I can't find any sales figures on the net, but judging from anecdotal evidence on other forums and from an Xbox sales rep I know, Controller S is preferred by more Xbox owners than the original. Notice in Xbox Madden and NFL2k3 that the controller graphics used are for S, not the original. Don't be surprised if MS eventually discontinues the original in favor of S.

My original comment was intended to support Xbox against one of its few major criticisms, not to instigate a flaming debate over which controller is better. But if you guys want to explain the merits of the original controller, please proceed.

Here's a big hand to the quality and depth of the discussion.

|)U(|0F|)3@TH,

Stop making me or others the strawperson(s) here. We simply state that YOUR blanket statement was the problem. Regardless of how much you go on about the "merits" of the S type controller. Those merits are all relative. That said, the point being put across which you seem to miss is that it depends on who you are. The only flame bait here was your excessive generalizations.
