Default One way to avoid turning a thread into a flame-fest

You missed the point.

It has nothing to do with isolationism. I'm not suggesting we just ignore other countries (and other governments), and just be "All for America only!!". I didn't say that (so, don't go trying to put words in my mouth). What I did say, in regards to the poll, is who gives a shit.

It really doesn't matter what the common world citizen thinks or feels about America. They have absolutely no say in what happens in America. It's a hollow point. Their opinion really counts for nothing at all. These polls are worthless. And besides, most of the population of other countries HATE America regardless of anything.
And the reason all those other countries HATE Amerika Nick?
Digi, honestly: do you really expect this retarded will understand your reference? C'mon...
The above is a post by T2k in the RPSC forum.

Regardless of what your opinion is of someone (most likely a stranger you really could care less about), avoid calling folks "retard", "idiot", "a**hole", etc-other-derogatory-terms (look at how, as just an example, the ATI employees debate on various matters). I don't have the time to check every posts in every thread in every forum but whenever I find such instances ocurring, I will likely lock such a thread. If I'm on a good mood, I'll lock it after 3 or 4 such instances in one thread. If I'm menstruating, I'll lock it even after one such instance (like I have done with the thread as quoted above).

Not at all meaning to antagonize you Rev, but are you specifically pointing out T2K's over-the-top response or are you also slapping my wrists for my reparte with Nick?

PLEASE don't get pissed at the question, I'm just looking for clarity so I don't screw up in the future.

Or the straight up tampon?

Personally, the whole menstrual thing wierds me out, but pads sounds decidedly icky.

Locking a thread isn't fair to the other posters. There are a lot of threads full of stupid comments or unwarranted insults that still have good content otherwise. I had to tell Vince just the other day in a discussion we were having regarding polling information on Presidents to knock off the insults and childish comments or I'd permanently ignore him.

It wouldn't be fair to me or anyone else participating in that thread for you to lock it down. That's too draconian Rev.

I agree with Natoma. Why not just apply more strict rules, ie. say 2 insults = PM warning, next one = 1 week temp ban or something along those line? (PM warning first so things can be clarified if there was some misunderstanding)

Perhaps you should have take a more closer look on the person - just start backwards, with his signature and you'll get more understanding instead of this guessing..

PS: Frankly, I hate when people like you single out somebody without tkaing a closer look - details are telling, believe me...

Sounds cool.
I wonder what would have happened to DemoCoder when he started his ghetto-style poll... He'd have been banned or what? That was a REAL low rider, just like in The Bronx...

Rev,

It there any chance you could "edit" the offending posts (leaving a warning) PM sed user with the warning as well (stating they will get this 'one warning' then 'a week tempery ban' if the offender continues).

It's just that there have been several threads I've tried to posting to and a single offender had gotten the thread locked (which spoils it for all the other posters who engage in sensible discussion).

the problem with this is that it takes too much work, if you like the thread restart it, and well after X amount of locks people are bound to become more careful, and I think that for proper trollfest to get going you need at least two people, or more... so if all the rest learn to ignore the trolls, that will hopefully either calm them down, or make them burst in the proper flame which than might even warrant a ban, but I guess no of the current posters will go that far.

Still the "draconian" option is there.

Sometimes people just do not learn and keep their crusade until (1) the thread is locked or (2) everyone leaves.

I'm loving the "ignore option" more and more as time goes on...

Reading every single post and 3editing/deleting the offending material can get to be a whole lot of work. Most of the time when it turns into an all out flamefest it is best to lock the entire thread. With only a few offending posts or flames then these can be edited/deleted with ease.

I think it would be best to leave threads locked. If the whole forum cannot have a civil discussion and has to resort to flaming or insulting then a thread should be locked. I do not mean the whole forum as in everyone who participates in a discussion, but a few individuals who instigate others into flaming. Forums run a lot better when you get rid of the trolls who cause 90% of the problems. The console forum used to be horrible when chap and Deadmeat were around, but banning those two and things have calmed down a lot.

I have said time and again what B3D do not want in the forums. Editing posts by the mods/admin is too much work. I'd much rather make a post saying who is to blame and then I'll lock the thread. Gets the message across better, in public rather than PMs.

I keep track of who is to blame for any thread locking by me. If that person is a frequent offender/reason, I'll ban him.

The reason for the Poll on your behavior T2k was because of your incessant ad hominem attacks, the very thing you are being called on in this forum for by Rev. Don't pretend the poll was preemptive. That only occured weeks after your bad behavior, which has been noted by Natoma, Russ, Pax, Diplo, and just about every other forum regular.

If you want to insult someone, use PM.

Look fella, it's kinda sad as you're trying to save your face now and everytime this thing appears...

I'm not your old ghetto buddy, I told you - forget this pathetic explanation, useless and unecessary.
As I've already told you few times, it doesn't change anything: it just showed perfectly how deep is the place you came from.

Uh-oh, looks like I'll take another pre-emptive strike (T2k and Democoder).

You all know exactly what I mean. Locked.
