I have seen 5200's with 128mb as well, maybe you should try to turn your 9800pro into one of those.

Why on earth would you want to turn a 9800 Pro into an X600?

Exactly, I say try for the mod to a 5200; after all, they both have 128mb of ram. :P

I shudder to think of the school education that brought the kid to come up with this line of reasoning...

Sorry dude, the answer is NO. Jesus. Can you turn a straight 8-cylinder engine into a V8 just because they both run on gas? Not quite that simple!

My old computer had 256 megs of RAM. I turned it into a 6800 Ultra Extreme!

Be glad, your 9800 is a lot FASTER than any x600 anyways!

Umm, while his question does seem obviously stupid to most of us here, just think about some of the different cards nvidia has sold in the past and why they're so successful. Geforce 4 MX? GeforceFX 5200? So instead of laughing at him, why don't you try and explain to him why it's not exactly a sensible question?

After all wouldn't you hate to be talking to a coworker about their 3.6Liter V6 and how well it performs, then you tell them that your 5.0L Mustang will eat it alive, only to find out they drive a 911 Turbo?! (Sorry just had to use the car analogy)

But to get back on topic...

The reason that turning a 9800 Pro into an X600 is kind of nonsense for a few key reasons...
1.) 9800Pro has 8 pipelines, X600 4
2.) 9800Pro has 256bit memory bus, X600 128bit

I could be wrong about this but I do believe the X600 also lacks some of the hidden surface removal techniques available to the 9800Pro.

All in all your 9800Pro needs no mods (other than possibly the volt mod), just overclock it and see how far you'll get.
