Default Tech Report: Doom3 and Mid/Low-Range cards

http://techreport.com/etc/2004q3/doo...w/index.x?pg=1

Quote:
WE'VE ALREADY examined DOOM 3's performance on the newest generation of high-end graphics cards from ATI and NVIDIA, but we're not done with the game just yet. While DOOM 3 is obviously most comfortable running on the latest high-end graphics hardware (especially NVIDIA's GeForce 6800 series) the vast majority of gamers are equipped with older and more mainstream graphics cards. These cards may not have the features or horsepower necessary to churn out playable frame rates with the resolution and detail level cranked, but they'll still run the game. The question is how well.

Interesting read by the Tech Report folks. The Dustbuster pulls in a stunning show....cept the AF looks pretty ineffective at HQ. 9700 PRO in an interesting position...

Care to elaborate, because I don't have the faintest clue wtf you are trying to get at with that comment?

yes the dustbuster (5800ultra) does put up a good show. Sadly its only in 1 game .

The 9700pro puts on an equaly good show. Judging from the jump from the 9500pro to the 9700pro we would see the 9800xt being just shy of the 5800ultra and about even with the 5950ultra.

Good stuff. This game would have really helped the 5800ultra if it came out a few months after .

I don't know what I meant either really. I was suprised how it was behind in the low-res tests (prolly due to driver inefficiencies compared to NV) yet pulled ahead nicely as the detail ramped up.

I found it quite interesting that the 9000PRO's image was slightly different than the 8500's.

Bandwidth.

At Medium detail the texture settings are going to be lower, hence not as demanding on the bandwidth and will allow the 5800 to streach its legs with the high clocks rates and double Z/Stencil. However, at high detail the texture detail gos up which then puts the demand back on the memory bus, which chokes the 5800's other advantages. This is why you are seeing the 5900's do better at Hi IQ

I think what he's trying to say is that, had Doom 3 come out near the time of the 5800 Ultra's ill-fated arrival, then things might have looked rather different. That was presumably nvidia's hope during the development of NV30, but it shows the folly of developing with an emphasis on one game.

Fortunate it didn't, since HL2, the PS 2.0 showpiece, was also delayed.

I thought the 8500 and 9000 cards would do better.... Does this show that Ati's OpenGL driver really does suck? There's no Ultra shadow on GF3 Tech is there?
