Default GeForce FX 5700 Ultra GDDR3 Preview

With the new high end cards announced and all utilising the latest GDDR3 memory, you may be forgiven if you overlooked the fact that these uber-expensive, and barely available, boards were not the first to bring the latest GDDR3 memory into consumers hands – it was in fact the second revision of the performance mainstream board GeForce FX 5700 Ultra that first supported the new memory type. Here we’ll take a look at this newer version of the 5700 Ultra, comparing it against its GDDR-II counterpart.
"Another big facet of GDDR3 is the addition of on-die termination. This helps the RAM to reach higher clock speeds as well as benefiting board manufacturers, as the fact that they no longer need to worry about termination resistor packs and other power supply circuitry relating to the RAM can save them reduce the component count and as a result both complexity of the board and cost."

Since the review paid some attention to GDDR3, this seems like a good place to ask this:
Since GDDR3 > GDDR2, GDDR3 is a jedec standard and there is much fanfare over DDR2 for main system memory, will we see DDR3 for main system memory any time soon?

Sadly, yes, I do have to do 'real' work too. I'm just lucky that my real job affords me forum browsing time and the like. :P

Default Samsung DDR-II discontinued

Since Samsung's GDDR-II was discontinued last year, in this case the merits of GDDR3 vs. GDDR-II are less relevant than the ability to source the memory components for production.
The K4N26323AE is a 128Mb (4Mx32) device and requires 8 pieces for a 128MB frame buffer. The K4J55323QF is a 256Mb (8Mx32) device that uses 4 pieces for a 128MB FB. Is the backside heat sink actually required? Are there memory chips on the back, or is it there to mount the frontside heat sink?

No DDR3 is far away DDDR3 is like GDDR2 based on DDR2, but with additional tweaks to make it faster and more suitable for graphics cards.
