Quarters 3 and 4 of this year are meant to be the time when cutting edge graphics hardware is meant to prove itself with a new crop of games coded to take advantages of 'new' features. Amongst these titles sit:
Doom 3 ('http://www.idsoftware.com') from ID software. Which will be seen at this years E3 event if you're lucky enough to be attending. Some fanatics have assembled a FAQ ('http://doomworld.com/files/doom3faq.shtml') which contains a lot of info about everything they where able to find out about ID's current project. UT2003, ('http://www.unrealtournament2003.com') which should have a publically downloadable version of their performance test on the 24th of this month sports a very nice physics engine as well as cutting edge graphics.Mercedes-Benz World Racing with some nice screen shots ('http://www.tdk-mediactive.com/press/default.cfm?F=4&C=0&PL=6') available, even if I disagree with their definition of high res. There is also this flash slide show ('http://www.nohatrequired.com/index_fr.html') including a lot more images and a soundtrack probably more suited to a hotted up Honda civic than a prestigious 'Merc'.Another highly impressive racing game in developement is Colin Mcrae Rally 3 ('http://www.codemasters.com/colinmcrae3/front.php') with it's very nice particle effects, most noticable in some of the snow screen shots.Game developer Dejobaan have an interesting poll in an attempt to see just what gamers prefer in terms of graphics. Their test has randomly displayed screen captures from a number of current games and of crourse their own new game called Inago Rage. ('http://www.dejobaan.com/inago')
If you are interested in the developement and coding side of modern graphics and games and not just playing them reactor critical has an introduction to shaders. ('http://www.reactorcritical.com/review-shadersintro/review-shadersintro.shtml') Real world Tech's article explaining just what a compiler is ('http://www.realworldtech.com/page.cfm?AID=RWT041902173146') may also prove to be of interest.
