I'm sure a lot of you would have played the original masterpiece X and X-tension... I know I did for a looooong time.

Anyway new rolling demo released which uses the engine to show a movie of the game and even includes a benchmark mode. Might be good to compare how different chipsets handle this.

not sure exactly what features it uses as the site doesn't give much information but it does have the optimal settings as a DX9 compatible card with fallbacks on Recommended system for a DX8 card so it might have some use of PS2/VS2 shaders.

At work atm so I'm going to have a look when I get home later.

I dl'ed it yesterday

I had a few questions about it that I posted here: http://www.egosoft.com/x2/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9901

I want to find out what DX9 features it uses

that's not much of a response so far Brent.... with the release of a rolling demo, you'd think they would be more willing to share information and do some PR work to get more exposure.

Just tried this out, and it brought my new system to its knees at times. Running at 1024x768 with no AA or AF and with bumpmapping and dynamic shadows on, it averaged about 60 fps. It was definitely down into the teens at times though. It didn't look to me like there was any LOD bias though, which is something that would probably help.

It seems shadows are just killing performance in that game.

Don( t know if it is really normal or if it is still a beta version of the game but it seems you just can't use shadows and still have an acceptable framerate when there is a lot of action.

Using shadows I averaged ~60 fps....but it dipped into teens several times. But man...those shadows are so pretty. I'm really looking forward to this game. Does anyone know if a demo was ever released for the original? I never played it :(

Brent,

This may help you in knowing what DX9 features are used (not much):

so not really a dx9 bench at all, that kinda sucks. The game itself though is looking really impressive cant wait to see this one hit the shelves.

Yes - it's a shame, cause they look reeeally sexy, especially the scene where the ship casts shadows on a lot of small asteroids.
