Mac OSX is getting an app store in 90 days, like the iphone/ipad one. 70/30 split and all. This could turn out good, or bad. Not sure I'm a big fan of Apple taking control of all the publishing.
Facetime. Meh. I like how they said Facetime was the first video calling app for a mobile phone. Nope. I guess, it isn't a bad thing to have if you know a lot of people with new iPhones.
OS Lion. Not much to see here. Fullscreen apps? Didn't those exist before? Why didn't they? The new improved Expose type thing looks good. Is that really all they're changing?
Oh yeah, iLife. I don't use it, except iPhoto in the most primitive fashion, but I imagine there's a lot of people that are happy about the changes. The interactive music instruction seemed cool, but I haven't seen vids.

Is an App Store controlled by Apple good for the desktop space? For instance, if they have the same approval process as the iPhone app store, will this hurt the overall community? Take the situation where someone wants to make an app that steps on Apple's toes a little, and Apple rejects it. Now it exists outside the app store, if they choose to distribute by other means. Will the average person look outside the app store? Will people stop working on the types of apps that Apple disapproves of because they don't want to shut themselves out of the app store?
I can see some negatives coming from this.

So app store will fight with Steam and so on?

Yeah, seems like.
I think the difference with the App Store on OS/X is that I doubt App Store will become the only way to download and install software in the near future.
Will OS/X Lion support resizing windows from all corners? That's all I'm really interested in atm. It's by far my biggest grip with OS/X at this point. Even Ubuntu has it, and I miss it almost every time I boot up my Mini.
Overall though I'm very excited by an App Store for OS/X. It will make publishing your own software and finding nifty tools so much easier. I like.
Resize windows from anywhere and get the home/end and tab between fields on html forms working the way they do on other OSes please!

The App store won't be the only way to download and install software. My issue is whether Apple aggressively rejects things because of "quality control." People will go to the app store first and foremost, once it is available. Will people "self censor" their content, so to speak, to make sure they can get into the App Store? And I'm not talking about adult content, I'm just talking about making apps that aren't to Apple's liking. Sure, they can be available from their own sites, but with the community steered towards the App Store, will devs feel pressured to change their applications.

The App store won't be the only way....for now. Let's not forget the company in question here. The Apple customer base is quite fond of Apple's offerings so they might eventually get the impression that the app store is the only place to buy MAC apps.

I seriously doubt Apple would lock down OS X since there are many people using unix/linux ported software on it who would simply move to linux. I think it's a smart move for 80% of their customer base though - non-techie, mediaphiles, etc.

There's no way they could lock it down to only the app store. I'm pretty sure they'd get their asses in trouble for anti-competitive practices. It's funny that Apple pretty much does everything Microsoft got in trouble for with Windows, but they do it on phones, so nobody seems to care.
Plus they're not abusing any mobile phone monopoly situation, so they can't get into trouble for the same reasons.
Bah Lion, Facetime and the App store are not terribly exciting developments. But I do lust for that tiny Macbook Air. If only it were more affordable.

Didn't Microsoft get in trouble from the EU for bundling IE with Windows, yet you can't even install an alternative browser on iOS?

huh? I use Opera on iOS on my iPod daily.

My bad. I've been told repeatedly that you couldn't do that.

Heh, that's usually what people say wrt Opera. ;-)
Anyway, I'm a bit disappointed with the announced features. It's early days, though, and I'm hoping they'll have more before the new version ships. As it stands, "back to the Mac" mostly ported iOS features. I suppose it all depends on the price. If Lion is priced like Snow Leopard was then it should be fine.
Florin: I am liking the new 11in Air; but I agree with you that the price is too high.

I always liked the idea of an app store on the main computer but not this type of model where Apple takes 30%. Basically you won't be getting the big games or pro apps on here. Can't imagine Adobe handing over £300 to Apple for putting CS5 in their store for instance.
My bad. I've been told repeatedly that you couldn't do that.
not to mention firefox/chrome are available on mac os.
I see this is a good idea, yes it does smell of a monopolism?,
but a lot of developers have made cash on the iphone store. even with the 70/30 split. certainly more money if they never had that but they got to keep 100%
Mind you, you still get Safari pre-installed as far as I know, while on Windows 7 in the EU you know are presented with a choice of several Browsers to install instead of Internet Explorer, so the situation isn't quite equal just yet.
Anyway, I look forward to this. Games like Angry Birds HD and Flight Control HD on the iPhone should work just fine on the Mac.
