I do not know a release date, i wait more untill hl2 comes out. IMO it will not be a good benchmark game because of the different rendering paths ( ati vs nvidia ).
how will it be good at all for online gaming? It's one of the most intense games graphically for overdraw and doesn't really scale all that well to loewr-end systems. since online fps games needs high constant frames, IMO doom3 engine will be good for single player experiences only, at least until the medium level of hardware catches up.

Nothing precludes a reviewer from forcing rendering paths.
Nothing precludes a reviewer from forcing rendering paths.
and since all reviewers turn their brain on befor benchmarking the will do this...
i seriously doubt that the majority of benchmarkers even know that the new doom3 engine has different rendering paths.
Different rendering paths are a necessary bad in Doom3.

I believe some reviewers are going to abuse the system with all the codepaths to choose from.
I can see it:
ARB2 vs NV30 patch.
"As we can conclude nVIDIA have the fastest videocard available..."
Not only that but as usual I doubt that those same reviewers are going to compare apples to apples IQ.
IE: 2xAA on R300 and 2xAA on NV3x.
should be:
2xAA on R300 and 4xAA on NV3x.

I'd agree with you if you said 4x and 6x, but 2x and 2x are pretty close.
(And what's wrong with pitting the ARB2 path vs. the NV30 path in DoomIII? If you're interested in which card plays doomiii the best, you probably don't care what 'path' its using)

I agree, though the reviewer should stress that one is full 32-bit float and the other only 16, and then check for noticeable visual differences, if any, before declaring which board is the winner.
Edit: Oops, in this situation of 'comparing', it's FP24 (ATi/ARB2 path) vs. FP16 (NV30 path).

That's true if all you are going to play is Doom 3. If you look at the wider picture other games *not* having a custom-built NV3x code path becomes an issue. You are effectively "misled" on the performance for anything other than Doom 3. Unless every game has a NV3x path, it's worth noting that Doom 3 only runs well *because* of customisations you probably won't enjoy in other games.
Anyone know if Half-Life 2 will have a custom NV3x path? I mention it because on the E3 promo video, the presenter commented on how much they were using shaders. My first though is the NV3x will really suffer badly because of it's low shader performance *unless* HL2 has a Doom-like customised rendering path that can offset this. Or I suppose you could run the game in it's "low-end machine" configuration, which kind of defeats the point of buying a high-end video card in the first place.
