I was wondering why software makers continue to use piracy circumvention methods that don't help and do hurt.

I mean, I would never pirate, never have.

But honestly, I think for os's a cd-key and internet activation is enough (and that's it, considering how much microsoft charges for their software) and requiring the disc (for games) to be in the drive are good enough and everything else has always failed and always will fail and winds up inconveniencing non-pirates and the sw makers and really kind of gives pirates an adrenaline rush when they break anti-piracy measures.

Think about the costs of anti-piracy measures:

They require R&D which requires resources, likely time and driving up the price of games.

Nothing hasn't been hacked. Every time a new tech is made, they're like "oh, this is uncrackable." They've been saying that as far back as the ps1 days, that the black discs were nigh-impossible to counterfeit. Then 2 days later you hear someone has cracked it.

Legitimate users are inconvenienced by most anti-piracy measures.

Pirating could be a hobby for some people, for all I know. Take away the anti-piracy measures and the pirates won't get an adrenaline rush from circumventing piracy measures. People have to do this for a hobby, not just to save money. Pirates probably get a sense of accomplishment whenever they successfully circumvent anti-piracy measures.

So my question is... why do sw makers do all of this which hurts themselves and legitimate users. PLUS, it doesn't circumvent piracy all that well.

Honestly, I thought this would be a great thread. So enjoy. If I'm wrong, I could be debated or corrected. If I'm right I want to see if most agree with me.

This subject actually gets done to death every 2-3 months around here, so you may find that people are just burnt out on rehashing the same old arguments over again. In fact there's probably half a dozen related threads in the first page of this sub-forum alone.
