I'm just starting Death Note (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Note), on the second episode. The premise is absolutely wonderful - a boy finds a demonic book that kills anyone whose name is written in it. He of course intends to cleanse the world of evil.
I also finished watching The Eternity You Desire (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=3916)the other week for the third time. Lovely series which breaks my heart. I like a good short series that tells a complete story.
What are you watching?

Death Note was good. Very few that came out in the past year that grabbed me.
The last one I enjoyed was Darker Than Black (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darker_than_Black). Currently I'm rewatching all my One Piece (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Piece) episodes.
As for recommendations, for laughs check out Gintama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gintama), and my all time favourite is The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Melancholy_of_Haruhi_Suzumiya_(anime)).

That aint a freaking anime, its a cartoon for kids. Oke, its beats your average cartoon but its not even close to something like ghost in a shell (which imo could rival, and probably beat your average big dollar prime time tv series) or even more average anime.
Hell, can you even call it anime as its not made by Japanese? (oke oke I know anime isnt something strictly japanese but avatar does lack that anime ''thing'').
As for new anime, wouldnt know, havnt watched anything for ages. The only anime I watch is old stuff I rip to my DS to watch in the Bus when I get back from work. I'm currently watching saikano for like the 3th or 4th time and I still love it. Its just so sad, one of the few things I watched that really makes you feel depressed.
GitS SAC was okay, but the action a little thin and the philosophy a bit overbearing (especially the 2nd Gig, nice ending though).
I enjoyed Darker than Black too. As for 2008, I'll probably watch Code Geass 2nd season and the new Macross series.
I never liked GitS:SAC much because of how freaking seriously the series took itself(although I do like the movies).
I'm finishing up Ergo Proxy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ergo_proxy). It's a methodical cyberpunk series with lots of exposition. It's complex so if you get frustrated from all the answers not being explained to you simply and clearly avoid.
And of course I have to mention Lain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_experiments_lain)(more cyberpunk) and Berserk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berserk_%28manga%29#Berserk_anime)(very mature dark fantasy) in every anime recommendation thread. My two favorite anime series. If you like Lain also check out Texhnolyze (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texhnolyze)(yup, cyberpunk again) which is a sort of spiritual successor due to the same creative talent from Lain working on it.
It's complex so if you get frustrated from all the answers not being explained to you simply and clearly avoid.
That's a rather tendentious statement.
There are some people who love intentional ambiguity (look at the success of Lost) and those who don't. Me, I simply don't like the characters enough in Ergo Proxy to keep watching it. I also dread it will fall into the "a good ending is too easy and not sophisticated" camp, which tends to annoy me. For a slightly newer series which isn't in a hurry to explain itself in the beginning (and which is quite frankly self contradictory) I did like Noein.
In the end though I prefer lots of action, focus on basic human emotions and a happy ending :) (Bitter sweet is good enough.) Darker than Black was perfect.

Just got done watching the movie "Vexille" and quite liked it, fun sci-fi anime with more CGI than you can shake a stick at. (Looked more like a cell-shaded CGI movie than animation, but it was good)
I'm currently doing "Project Arms" which I'm only on the 15th or so episode so I can't tell if it's good or not. I'm liking it so far.
Gunslinger Girls has a new season this year and while the animation isn't quite as good, the story is solid and follows up where the last season left off so I'm hooked.
Naruto Shippuden has been rocking too. I've been looking forward to every new episode.
But the big winner for me this year is Shakugan no Shana II. I loved the first series and this one is better than the original. 22 was just released out of a 24 season run.
More laters when I have time, these were just off the top of me head. :)
Thanks for the mention of Vexille, dunno how I managed to miss that. Shakugan no Shana looks nice ... if it weren't for the pre-teen star and loli companions, which just put me off :/
Project Arms starts out nicely, but the latter part of the series lets it down IMO.
Ends in a hurdle race of ever more powerful opponents to the finish line of the BBEG base with the kidnapped damsel in distress ... and a poor finale.

Shana is another high school show I'll admit and that it always starts off fluffy, but it gets VERY dark and intense near the end of the series. I like it. :P
I'm tempted to look at your Project Arms spoiler, but I'm resisting. I'm still liking it.
I got done watching Nighthead Genesis a bit ago and would have recommended it also up until the last 4 episodes...I'm still trying to figure out exactly how it ended or if I liked it.
I think the show I'm most looking forward to this year is the new Haruhi....

I think the show I'm most looking forward to this year is the new Haruhi.... You got that right.
I have all the Shakugan No Shana II episodes and the movie too, just haven't got round to watching it yet.
I saw Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Girl_Who_Leapt_Through_Time) a few months ago and I liked it.

The Shana movie is just a recap/interpretation of the first season. Take it for what it is. ;)
Shows I have lined up to watch:
EF - A tale of memories
Simoun
Tokyo Underground
Onegai Teacher (I watched Onegai Twins and sort of liked  )
Today in Class 5-2
Bamboo Blade
After Project Arms and those I'll need some fresh recommends, say about a week? ;)
EDITED BITS: I just saw "The Girl Who Lept Through Time" and liked it too. :)

Onegai twins/teacher is fun!
Some other series worth watching are green green for the ecchi stuff. I also liked great teacher onizuka. Twelve kingdoms is also very good, I didnt like the beginning because how it looks and all with the talking animals but once you get into it its very good. Maria sama ga miteru was also nice to watch, basically nothing happens for the whole series but for some reason I didnt mind. Infinite ryvius is another series I liked. Dont know why, if you count things up its not to special but for some reason it appealed to me alot.
And something you should defenitly watch (if you can find it) is princess tutu. Yes you read that right. But its so different that you just have to watch in, its not bad either, you just have to get over it that you are watching a anime about ballet.
Now here than and there is also very good, very sad story.

Lol at Chopper's bounty and Sanji's poster.
Full Metal Panic
Gundam00
Code Geass Season 1 & 2
Naruto Shippuden
Death Note
Trinity Blood
Ergo Proxy
Appleseed Ex Machina
Macross Frontier
D.Gray Man
I had the pleasure of subbing Japan's voted 2007 anime of the year (http://kankeishorui.wordpress.com/2007/12/28/top-10-anime-this-year/) (sola) so I would recommend it. Starts out nicely but gets weird toward the end.

People already mentioned a lot of others that I might have included, so I'll skip over those for the most part. Among the newer series this year, I'm getting to like True Tears a lot, as well as Spice and Wolf. The second season of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (preceded by the heading "Zoku" for the second season) is approaching the level of the first season -- see ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NheYjFElRno ) -- and part of it is just how much more random it is. Though, it's a little harder to find, and AFAIK, no one has been subbing it since episode 4.
To cover certain caveats about aforementioned shows in the thread... Gundam 00 and the second season of Shakugan no Shana are both very good, though I have to add that both shows took a few episodes to get there. Similarly, Naruto Shippuuden is sometimes good, sometimes very disappointing. It smacks that the producers are terrified of drawing too close to the manga's story position so they pace it very slowly to avoid the danger. While this is still better than having 2 years of pointless fillers about finding insects and such, it's somewhat paining to have all the good episodes separated by several episodes of endless chatter (and the worst part is that if you read the manga, you'd know that it's not entirely *pointless* chatter)
Hayate no Gotoku is hilarious, though with all the outside anime references, some of the punchlines may be easy to miss. Other truly hilarious shows with loads of game and anime references include Lucky Star and Clannad. Clannad being overall carrying themes like those of Air or Kanon, but with a great deal more comedy interjected into it -- see http://youtube.com/watch?v=9d_UknfiKMI or http://youtube.com/watch?v=WcD4o8w0U1U
Among the older series of crazed hilarity include Jungle Ha Itsumo Hale nochi Guu. Another of my favorites from the olden days is Kodomo no Omocha (aka Kodocha), which covers the entire gamut from outright craziness to tear-jerker in one sweep. Hilarious in a more "Seinfeld"-ish way would be Azumanga Daioh.
Something of a surprise for me this season was Shion no Ou -- I figured it would be something like Hikaru no Go, except for Shougi instead of Go (and I did enjoy Hikaru no Go, after all). Turns out that the Shougi is sort of backdrop for a sort of murder mystery storyline. I'm generally not a fan of mystery series because so many of them follow in the vein of Detective Conan (aka "Case Closed" in the US). But one rather old (though subbing was long in coming so subbers only recently finished the series) mystery series that I liked was Karakuri Zoushi Ayatsuri Sakon (usually just shortened to Ayatsuri Sakon), which exudes an overall darker atmosphere that I happen to like.
I'm surprised, though, that for all the series mentioned thus far in the thread that no one has mentioned Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

Btw are we talking about series only or about any Anime?
Appleseed Ex Machina
Why can't they spend some money on a good script instead of just the animation budget? (The same lament applies to a lesser extent to Vexille, which had a salvageable story but the poorly introduced relationship storyline was just bad and I can't say I liked the latter half of the movie.) I actually thought the first Appleseed was better in this respect.
Just saw Paprika, now that's how an anime movie should be ... how did that not get an oscar in 2006 when there was only crap going against it? Hell, it didn't even get a fucking nomination.
If you haven't seen it, check it out.

Whatever you like.
Having finished Death Note, I recommend it wholeheartedly. It also has an amazingly good soundtrack, though the title and credits theme song that changes half way through the series is comically bad. Such great lyrics as HEY HEY HUMAN SUCKER YEAH HUMAN FUCKER
I just finished Death Note yesterday. That is definitely awesome. The main characters have unbelievable supersmart schemer/deduction moments but it doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the series.

What are you watching?
I'm watching gundam 00, which obviously is about what happens when smart people have a lot of resources at their hand and plan far ahead into the future.
I'm also going to start watching Code Geass season 2 soon. That series is excellent, and so is the power of Geass that the protagonist, Lelouch gets. Many who've seen the first season know, how it shows cunning strategy in battles as well as power disparities and of course abuse of said power.
Higurashi season 1 and season 2 were some of the best recent stuff I've seen. Has an air of mystery to it, kind of like a detective series. It has the best series opening in quite a while too.
Last year Ergo Proxy, or "how the future of mankind will be"(conservatives would do well to watch it, as it is a glimpse, and a moderate one at that of the inevitable future) our future minus the bad things that happen in the series of course.
I never liked GitS:SAC much because of how freaking seriously the series took itself(although I do like the movies).

I agree with vazel's recommendations.
As for more lighthearted but cool series, I'd say the full metal panic series(fmp 1, fumoffu, 2nd), nadesico(ruriruri ), and kiddygrade.
I really hope they continue the Full Metal Panic series cuz it was just badass!
I do agree about Ex Machina. I bought it on Blu ray and was utterly disappointed with the story. It was pretty but boy was the story weak!
Right now I am watching Bleach and waiting for Gundam 00 the last 3 episodes to be released in awesome HD quality :)
I still have Death Note and Eureka 7 to watch. I will check out Higurashi as well!

I'm not sure if it was full metal panic, but I think it was, which has various manga or books already published with additional storyline. Which means just like berserk the story is likely there and just waiting for translation into another medium.
I would recommend you watch nadesico, if you watched and liked full metal panic, martian successor nadesico shares uncanny similarities and style and I believe it is an older series. I thought of full metal panic almost as a pseudosequel reinterpretation of nadesico.

This is a insanely old series but I'm reading through Lone Wolf and Cub right now. Truly amazing. I believe the manga was first released in 1970 in japan but it didn't make it stateside until 2000 when darkhorse picked up anyways. Anyways highly recommended. My favorite manga series ever (although closely followed by berserk and gantz hehe).

Romantic filler ... they even push the reset button at the end of it. Seems like something cut from the regular season.

Lone Wolf and Cub is awesome stuff, indeed. The writer behind it went on the create quite a few classic manga series (Crying Freeman). There're also 6 live action film from the late 70ies (don't get "Shogun Assassin", it's the cut down english summary of the 6 movies).
If you need some nice manga recommendations, I can give you a pointer here and there
Brought this old thread back from the dead...Code Geass R2 is about to end and so is Macross Frontier. I have been downloading their 720p mkv versions like crazy and I must say I am enjoying them a lot. Especially the releases by a fansub group called menclave. Highly recommend checking them out.
Gundam 00 season 2 is going to start next month and I am looking forward to that as well. I am definitely grabbing the bluray versions of Macross F, Gundam 00 and Code Geass when they get released.
Also Nabari no Ou started out awesome but somehow it sorta died in the middle of the series. Still worth downloading and watching. Also finished watching Faffner and I definitely enjoyed it. Was extremely similar to Eureka 7.
Next up is Claymore. Also I have been watching Spiderman the Animated Series and my god its an enjoyable show! :)

Right now I'm really enjoying Bleach and Naruto: Shippuuden. In the past I've really enjoyed:
Outlaw Star
Cowboy Bebop
Full Metal Alchemist
Ghost in the Shell: SAC
DBZ
Eureka
Will have to see if any of the previous suggestions other people have made are available online...
Edit:
Oh! It's worth mentioning that in Naruto: Shippuuden, it's looking like a rather new interesting story arc has just begun, and in Bleach it's look like the current filler arc is just about over, so we should be started on a new story arc very soon! (side comment: for filler, this Bleach arc has been quite good, though the continuity with previous arcs is questionable)
Compared to Naruto filler arcs everything looks good.
The problem with series like Naruto and bleach is that after the first 2 seasons character development comes to a dead halt. Rukia is still secretly burning the same candle for Ichigo as always, Sasuke is still the same emo douche he always was, Naruto is still a tard. It gets tiresome.
lol I cant stand Sasuke. And Nartuo while hes supposed to be very strong fights like a retard in the anime. All he does is train but when the fights come around he somehow scrapes by.
That said I am definitely enjoying D. Gray Man a LOT. Its a lot better tbh than Bleach or Naruto.
You guys should look into it. Also Macross Frontier. I am really amazed that no one has mentioned that show. Its the best new anime I have seen in a while. The animation is stunning too!
Someone on these boards mentioned Macross Frontier somewhere. It's how I got turned onto the series. It looks stunning even in it's 720p x264 subbed format.

I get my fix of Macross from a group called gg but then I archive only the versions from menclave.
An interesting one I thought with great animation and a dare I say it 'cute' story is called Toshokan Sensou also released by the menclave group that you could be interested in checking out.
Not sure how you feel about Gundams but Gundam 00 Season 1 was quite awesome also from the same group menclave. If I knew your preferences, perhaps I would be able to suggest some more? Oh and D.Gray Man is also something I would highly recommend.
Oh I also forgot to mention but check out Samurai 7. I wonder if you guys have seen it.

I was initially quite trepeditious about seeing this. Gonzo, remaking an Akira Kurosawa film and *not* making a hash of it? Didn't seem possible.
It is actually really rather good. Ignore the title credits sequence with the annoying Jpop music and you get into this interesting retro futuristic retelling of the story. Helping the vibe is the traditional japanese musical arrangement used for the background music and despite having stonking big cyborgs wandering around it all works pretty well.
That said I haven't finished watching the series, only watched the first four dvds of the seven, but it has been a solid bit of fun thus far.
Yeah its definitely one of my favorites. Truly ranks as one of the best anime series ever for me.

I thought Macross Frontier was only 24 episodes and I finished watching 'em all late last night and was REALLY perturbed to find out it wasn't over yet, good thing #25 came up yesterday too!
haha so I take it the ending was good? I am going to wait till menclave get their act together and batch release some more Geass goodness. Their releases are slow but their quality is unbeatable. That said I quite enjoyed the ending of MF though there are a lot of questions left to be answered and in typical fashion a full length animation movie is supposed to be released for MF to I guess explain in more detai..

well
Naruto finaly puts his clone ablity to use and masters some crazy powers. Saskue finaly beats his brother and we learn that his brother was really working for the village to keep it safe and died protecting his brother and giving him a new ability. his brother also gave naruto some of his power. Saskue now wants to destroy the village. Jiruya dies fighting pain and the Sage frogs train naruto . We find out that Naruto is the 4ths son (though we all knew this for awhile). That pretty much catches up to the manga. However I think reading the manga and watching the anime naruto has really grown since the original storys. I to got pissed when he allways used the clones or the rasanga but that is starting to change and he is becoming a ninja with some cool moves. Saskue still sucks but its not as bad as it was. Even secondary characters have grown up. One of them lost their sensi (this weeks anime) and you can tell that he is diffrent in the manga after that.

Makes me wonder whether or not I should go and read the manga...but it's definitely looking like this is the case.
In the last pair of episodes of Naruto: Shippuden, Naruto had just started attempting to combine his rasengan technique with his elemental wind nature. He got to the point of causing a massive explosion that wiped out all of his clones, and upon trying again accidentally released the Nine Tailed Fox's chakra. Kakashi also went on about how nobody had ever been able to combine the rasengan with their elemental chakra, including the 4th Hokage that originally developed the technique. He claimed that he believed Naruto was the only one that could do it.
So all I have to say is that if you were wrong in this, with all this build up, I'd be hugely disappointed.

Well
If you read the manga you'd know what Naruto is going to be the one to do it. The whole theme of naruto is the young surpassing the old and succeeding where the last generation failed. If you look at Saskue and Naruto you have two friends that split apart due to things out of their control . You see this with Kakashi and his friend and of course Jiraya and Orichimaruo .
Sorry about butchering their names.
if you haven't read the kakashi story then you should search for it. its not in the anime but it explains how he got the eye. I use eau de toilette be sure to buy the manga as it comes to the states though

Honestly, I don't need to read the manga to be aware of that. The current story arc in the anime would be meaningless if Naruto didn't succeed here, so obviously he must.
Eastmen, about your spoiler ... yes I know what happens to Sasuke, but he is still an emo douche with really poor motivation. As for Naruto, I'm sure he will still be using one single technique which only ever works well once and being complete ineffectual just like before but a little shinier ... like the retard that he is.

I could not agree more. I cant stand Naruto the character to be honest. They just build him up a lot but all he has is like one move and now with this so called new technique it will be a more powerful version of that ONE move. If it were Sasuke vs Naruto despite the emo douchebag Sasuke is I would be cheering for Sasuke to put him down.
The sage training is interesting though.

Thats the thing , with that training it should open up many more moves , not just the enhancment of his one move.
The sage arts gave jairya alot of moves, the sage frog should be teaching naruto those. I think the whole thing with Naruto is that want him to allways have to struggle , He is not one of the genisus of the story but through his hard work and determination he is able to best them everytime. He was allways right behind Saskue but without realising it he was able to surpass him. He was under Nenji and was able to surpass him. I do agree that he has one or two moves that are way over used. however most of that is because of the filler. They had about a hundred eps of filler in which they couldn't really add things to the character because the manga hadn't progressed. That is a problem with all modern anime though. The filler just hurts them.
This is a second tag because it talks about mroe things that are happening an don't want to ruin it for anyone , so if your caught up with the manga by all means
I really want to see what happens when naruto finds out who his father is. How that would affect his choices and his training. The 4th sounds like he had alot of great powers and it be interesting if naruto found a way to use those also. I also want to see what Sakura chooses. Does she continue to pine for Saskue or goes for Naruto. The anime and manga are really starting to explore that point. Naruto and Saskue are following the great ninja before them. The chain of teachers goes from the first who had the epic battle to save the village , to Jirya his student who's best friend went rogue , to Kakshi who lost his best friend over a fight to now Naruto who has his best friend trying to destroy the town. It will be interesting to see if he can change the outcome the others had.
Thats the thing , with that training it should open up many more moves , not just the enhancment of his one move.
The sage arts gave jairya alot of moves, the sage frog should be teaching naruto those. Yeah I will concede there was just tooooooo many filler episodes with the anime. But really considering how far the manga is ahead of the anime they could have easily just not done with fillers at all! With that respect D.Gray Man is awesome!

I'm not so sure of that. The only filler in the manga was the kakashi arch which was what 4 issues. That came out and the anime was already finishing the Death of the third arc in japan. The problem is that you can really get through 10 or 15 chapters of the manga in 2 epsoides or so. So thats 15 weeks or just shy of 4 months worth of manga in two weeks of anime. So they have to stretch out the story in the anime. They do this on expanding on the manga during an epsoide of just simply making filler. Naruto had about 80 filler episodes before the new series started.
I am very bummed out today. Looks like D.Gray Man is going to end at episode 103. I was hoping it would keep following the manga but I cant believe they are citing lack of popularity for that show as a reason which is kind of amazing considering its so much better than Naruto!
First episode of Gundam 00 R2 should be out in a few from menclave! I cant wait!
Started watching a new show called...let me see if I got this right...Kuroshitsuji I believe. Its interesting...is all I can say.

I'm watching Gundam 00 first season right now and I'm enjoying it lots. :)
Also checking out Bokurano which got REAL interesting around episode 4-5 and is now definitely intriguing me. Your typical group of 14 japanese middle schoolers are chosen to pilot a mega-robot to save the world, but it actually has some really interesting twists that make it VERY dark. :)
Whoa that sounds good. Bokurano is it? Are there 720p releases of it somewhere on the webz? I have been utterly devastatingly spoillt by Menclave's high quality releases. I still await their releases of Code Geass 2 and MF even though both shows have been completed airing at least.

Yeah apparently there is a group thats releasing the Bluray rips with Menclave subtitles. I hear its epic but I am definitely waiting to order Gundam and Macross Frontier and Code Geass on Bluray.
I also saw another new anime that looks interesting called Tales of the Abyss that I am grabbing. Gonna watch it tonight see whats what.

Well I just started watching Code Geass (season one, not the new one) and I'm very happy. Seems to be quite fast moving, with decent cliff-hangers at the end of every episode which makes we want to sit through "just one more". How would you guys rate it overall against other series you've seen over the past few years?

I just can't wait for a new season of Haruhi goodness.
Sequels I would like to see are:
Full Metal Panic to continue along with the lines of the manga.
Trinity Blood to continue along with the lines of the manga.
D. Gray Man - I wish they had continued instead of finishing the anime.
There are some more but the names escape me at the moment.
Anyway, off to watch Episode 3 of Tales of the Abyss.

Moving into the second week of the Autumn anime season, I'm marking down Ga-Rei -Zero- and Chäos;HEAd as a couple of shows with a lot of potential from their opening episodes. On the more fun side of things, Toradora! has been pretty good from its first two episodes.

Darker than Black rocked, I do hope there is another season. :)
I really liked Gai-Rei-Zero, definitely a watcher. Also noted that Nabari no Ou finally concluded... :)
Yeah I have been waiting for Conclave to get their subs out but looks like I gotta find someone else for Nabari no Ou. Have seen till episode 18 I think it was. It started out really good but then the action just stopped and it was sorta downhill I thought from there on. Also the manga and the anime are slightly different and i prefer the manga more.

Nabari no Ou ran itself into the ground with too many slow and pointless episodes, it should never have been made into a 26 episode series. It's been subbed up to episode 25, but to be honest I'll be glad to get it finished for the sake of completeness.

Oh, I also grabbed Kannagi on a recommendation and I'm liking it. Another silly slice-o-life show involving gods materializing on earth again. :)
I just got into a good anime called Akagi. Its about a young kid who walks into a Mahjong parlor in the dead of night to escape the police. He's brilliant but doesn't know anything about the game, and so gradually learns as the episodes go on.
Its dark, the characters interesting and its fairly cerebral. Good anime!

Kannagi is a pretty good little slice-of-life show - Sure, it gets a bit fan service-y on occasion, but it's also pretty funny, although the further this season progresses the more it gets knocked into a cocked hat by Toradora.

Shana is another high school show I'll admit and that it always starts off fluffy, but it gets VERY dark and intense near the end of the series.

For some nice relatively mindless fun Kuroshitsuji is good (about a boy and his demon buttler).

haha digi I am with you on that one. The ending was like...errr...but I guess the cycle of him continuing to look for her continues?! Sort of feels cheap doesnt it the ending? I thought it was going real well till the end...too many unanswered questions!! I hate it when animes do that! Heck or even movies for that matter!
Just finished Freedom. Was absolutely epic! Love the OP as well. Just awesome awesome awesome!
Kurozuka isn't that old, so I'll spoiler this :
After the episodes with the complete no sequiturs I kinda figured it would have no real ending ... very Twin Peaks (the hand clap before the vine lady tells her story took the cake, but the shit throwing sequence and the stew party were pretty out there as well). Since I loathe Twin Peaks I think Kurozuka would have been better off without the DEEP plot (removing the butterfly time-twists sequences and adding a twist ending with either his entire memory being faked or with her just resetting his memory over and over because he starts hating her or something would have been better). There were no unanswered questions in this series, because there was no coherent story from the outset.

Lately for me, I've been watching Toradora, which is actually quite good. The very beginning episodes make it seem like it will be be something quite different than it is, but with some time, it has gotten less and less slapstick and wacky and more slice-of-lifey.
First season of Clannad was a while ago, and it was awesome. Currently watching the second season ("After Story"), and while it has shifted more to the drama side of the equation, it has retained most of that fourth-wall-breaking humor. The lack of Fuuko starfish pranks and
Tower of Druaga is not the best show of the season, but it's actually an improvement over the first season in a lot of ways. Though I still think the best episode of this show was the first episode of the first season, which basically parodied all the cliches of the genre... it was something of a folly that they didn't actually break out of all those cliches though.
Something to possibly look forward to, though, would be the upcoming remake of Fullmetal Alchemist (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyuSWKas6TE). Since the manga is not far from wrapping up now, they've apparently gone on to do a remake which follows the manga all the way through.

I recently re-watched ghost in the shell (a remake recently came out with some new CG) and it reminded me how good masume shirow's stuff was in general so I went searching for some of his older stuff and found dominion tank police. There's a 4 episode OVA, dominion tank police which is followed up by the 6 episode OVA new dominion tank police with the manga bridging the gap between the two. I've watched both the OVAs (manga is still in the mail) and they're both very good! Shirow's got a great sense of humor.

The more interesting ones are definitely those based off of the manga. This includes:
1-63 (initial arc)
(the stuff inbetween here, the Bount arc, was particularly bad, I thought)
110-167 (this is the start of the Hueco Mundo arc)
(the filler between here wasn't so bad, but wasn't great either)
190- (continuing on in Hueco Mundo...note that there's a tiny bit of filler spaced in here, but it's short)
Agreed with Chalnoth. The pendulum arc started at around 207. SO far so good :)
Rideback is definitely a great show. I have been waiting on the releases by Frostii. They do a damn good job. Also I am surprised no one is mentioning Viper's Creed. Huzzah is doing a good job of it though they are quite slow...ugh.

It's a reboot.
Ah, interesting, that makes sense. Makes me wonder where they're going to start. Will they just pick up where the anime and manga diverged, with a summary episode to start it off or something?
Because yeah, there's a heck of a lot of material in the manga that's not in the TV series and movie. The plots completely diverge fairly early on, and are entirely different on the nature of the homunculi, including some of their identities, as well as the identity and nature of Ed and Al's father. In fact, most of the background info is different in the manga from what it is in the series.

If it hasn't been mentioned before: Gankutsuou, an anime version of the Count of Monte Cristo set in the future. Although the ending is quite different, the rest of the story is fairly true to the story (aside from a few new story elements and some futuretech etc.). Plus, moreover, interesting visual style one of the best anime I've seen in quite a while.

If you like the visual style, Mononoke (not Mononoke Hime) has a very similar style, though it is even more reduced.
I do like the visual style. Some of the backdrops are utterly gorgeous. Its a very interesting style visually and the story is intriguing of course. I couldnt stop myself from watching only a few episodes I think I watched 2/3rds of the show already lol. Only thing that stopped me from watching the whole thing was the fact that I had to wake up early for work :P

I remember reading that they are remaking DBZ in HD and it's going to be put into less episodes. I read the manga when I was a kid, but only seen bits of the anime and a couple of the movies. I might catch it when it is out.
Speaking of anime the last one I watched was Devil May Cry. What a piece of crap. I haven't seen a single anime since. I might watch Future Boy Conan again. Still my favorite series and I recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it.

You are talking about the 12 episode series? Man I totally enjoyed that one. What didnt you like about it?
Yes, that's the one. What I didn't like about it? I am afraid to recall. The DMC games weren't really known for its story and the lines were cheesy but never take itself seriously as the whole package. The anime however was quite different. The action scenes were really lousy. It tried to take the story to another level but it just exposed how bad the DMC characters are. It also made me realized how bad anime can get. I haven't seen a single anime after that one and kind of put me off the future iteration of DMC series too, since I don't want to be reminded of that cluster of crap.

To Aru Majutsu no Index (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_Aru_Majutsu_no_Index)
Just finished the first season and I really liked it, but I have a feeling it's one of those that I'll love and Hanners will go "meh" about. ;) It's in the Shana no Shaka-type anime genre; boy has mysterious power he doesn't understand and meets mysterious girl who also has powers he doesn't understand who's being chased by mysterious baddies.
It's well done though, and I love the world they've created for it to go down in. A new take on the science versus magic scene, and I thought it was very well done.
Recommended. :)
Yep been following that show quite faithfully digi. I think they even said that the 'railgun' series is going to be released as well that should be interesting.
It does get a bit monotonous though with the main character rambling on and on about the right thing to do and all this heroic dialogue.
I quite enjoyed the Angel Fall arc where everyone was jumbled up. Had to LOL and nearly spray my cereal across my beautiful screen a couple of times...but good thing I didnt.
Viper's Creed I am sure I mentioned before is a great show. I recommend that.
Also another show I watched is called Gintama and its quite a good show actually. Recommend checking it out. 106 episodes out so far.
Just watched the pilot anime movie called The SKy Crawlers. Was very beautiful especially the flight sequences but if you dont know the manga then watching it might be a bit wtf.
Mitchiko to Hatchin is also another interesting show I have started watching. I still dont see the point of the show but i am assuming it will pick up more as the show progresses. I have been grabbing ThorAnime's releases and they are only on episode 6 so far.
ALso another very intriguing anime I picked up was Casshern Sins. Looks gorgeous in 1080p. Fights are pretty sweet. Somehow it reminds me a bit of Ergo Proxy? Esp the main character. Ergo Proxy was a very very weird show though.
I dropped Ergo Proxy ... too DEEP for me (as in philosophy + intentional vagueness).
I quite like Casshern Sins, although I haven't finished it ... so an unsatisfying ending might put a damper on that.

It seriously is too deep that show. I have no idea wtf happened really at the end. I must say the reason why I stuck with it was because I was morbidly curious and the version I got was quite pretty to look at.

Alrighty! The end of some seriously good series came and now the new shows are upon us, I went a downloaded a ton of first episodes over the weekend without doing any homework on 'em...I'm trying them all. :)
Basquash! - Giant robots playing basketball so the players can get to the moon? Haven't watched it yet.
Phantom - Watched it last night and it seems to have some promise! Reprogramming a boy/girl to become an assassin team, has potential.
Tears to Tiara - Uhm, no clue...haven't seen yet.
Pandora Hearts - I had low expectations because of the name, but the anime was surprisingly solid and interesting. I'll be following it, recommended. :)
Asura Cryin' - Another one that surprised me in a good way! The story of a boy and his girlfriend ghost, and them discovering the world isn't quite what they thought.
Cross Game - School kiddy sillies, I couldn't watch it.
Segoku Basara - No clue, haven't seen or heard yet.
Valkyria Chronicles - C'mon, you can't expect me to have seen 'em all yet?!?
Fullmetal Alchemist 2 - Some weird show about alchemy in an alternate world similar to ours, seems interesting... ;)
Any great ones I'm missing?

Sengoku Basara has a possibility of being decent, but historically, I've not been that impressed by animes based on videogames. And considering that it's a Capcom game, and the last game cum anime from Capcom was Devil May Cry (which was as you surely know, awful)... well, I'm not keeping my hopes up. At the very least, though, the game was pretty over-the-top and just fabricated a lot of personalities for characters, and the anime is similarly over-the-top, so maybe they'll have something that's a little truer to the game. And I guess if you go in expecting a pretty mindless action series with a hint of twisted comedy, I guess it's a good show at this point.
Aside from the ones you mentioned, one great one to add to the list is K-ON!. It's basically a slice-of-life anime about a high school music club forming a band, and is a typical KyoAni style humor-injected type of series. Though I have no clue at this point what to expect musically across the season (considering "K-ON" is a contraction of "Karui Ongaku" as in "light music"), it's fairly interesting to see the fact that they're also using real-world instruments in the show. Gibson Les Pauls, Korg Triton Extremes, Yamaha Higpig series drums and all. Throw in the whole "moe" factor and some high production value, and you get the musical version of Haruhi meets Lucky Star.
There's a good amount of stuff out there this season which has potential or is already clearly good. About the only total piece of garbage I found this season Queen's Blade. I think it's some sort of effort to try and see just how close you can get to hentai and still keep the show on broadcast channels. Granted, it only shows up uncensored on one particular channel which broadcasts at certain hours of day and so on, but it is still a regular cable channel in Japan. Other channels will only broadcast it censored, but still. The least they could do is create something that had some semblance of effort to make a real show. I mean, the first episode has someone being killed because her boobs exploded. It seriously sounds like something that The Creature would have written.
I need a recommendation for some good anime.
disclaimer: Anything with kiddy highschool crap puts me to sleep, mecha and weird faces also ends it for me right there.
So something more adult and cerebral, along the lines of Monster.
I also like action anime (alla Berserk) but it has to take itself seriously.
Anything recent thats worth watching? (the Mahjong anime I caught in this thread was good)
I would recommend Valkyria Chronicles and Full Metal Alchemist Fred. Check them out.

Rideback is nice... kinda mecha-ish though, but the story itself is serious.
If you want something similiar with that mahjong anime (probably Akagi), you can check One Outs (baseball) and Kaiji... both involve gambling like Akagi and have similar drawing style (I believe Kaiji and Akagi are made by the same person).
Something Berserk-ish is Claymore.
The Daughter of Twenty Faces is kinda cerebral (about a gang of thief)..
You can try something like Moyashimon... it's about microbe and it's educational :)
I still have a couple of titles on top of my head, but I just leave it right there :)
FYI, One Outs is kinda new (2008), Rideback is new (2009), the other titles I believe are 2005-ish or newer.
And I want to comment a bit on FMA 2....
it's more of a remake than a sequel... basically the original anime didn't follow the manga halfway through the show (at that time the manga still ongoing)... this remake should follow the original manga till the end.
This will be one of the best shounen anime out there... much better than Naruto or Bleach in terms of story...
And K-ON is moeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :)
I like Rideback and I definitely like Claymore. They left it open at the end...I am wondering if a second season will be released...but who knows...
Shows I want more seasons of:
- Claymore
- Full Metal Panic
- Darker than Black
- That one vampire show the name of which escapes me that had Krusniks and the Vatican church and all that.
There are more but I cant think of any at the moment.

Vampire one... Trinity Blood :)
I think FMP would have the highest chance of having another season although there are rumors about 2nd season of Darker than Black.
Trinity Blood would be most unlikely though....
I also would like Claymore 2nd season, along with Berserk 2nd season... I'm holding back the urge to read the manga... :)
And Mandalay Picture have acquired the right for (possibly live action) FMP movie production.. whether they really will go ahead with it I don't know...
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3i701e5f503331aba0beae0430fe927543
And another more likely live action movie adaptation would be Ninja Scroll which will be produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and Warner Brothers...
Well, anything is better than Dragon Ball Evolution... i think :)

Trinity Blood thats it :) I almost had the name but it kept escaping me hehe. I am a huge fan of FMP so may your words come true! They left it hanging at the end of that season just when the main character was able to control the Arbalest. That was sweeeeeeeeet!
Also to add to the list of live action anime based movies lets not forget Keanu Reeve's involvement with the Cowboy Bebop franchise. Apparently Shinichiro Watanabe is involved along with other key players from the anime side of things who came out with Cowboy Bebop in the first place. That I have high hopes for!
I just watched Sengoku Basura and I quite enjoyed it lol. It has some crazy action but the animation is top notch. I think it will be quite a good show. I love the samurai era animes :)

This is my take on spring?2009 anime.... Basquash! :)
Queen's Blade: guilty pleasure :)
Phantom: kinda good, similar atmosphere to previous Bee Train works (Madlax, Noir, etc). It's probably going to be an action anime with mysteries behind it. The tone is serious.
Pandora Hearts: hard to judge based on 1st episode only. Probably will have a bit of comedy, some action, and mysteries.
Tears to Tiara: action anime with fantasy setting based on JRPG..
Valkyria Chronicles: war anime based on the same game. I'm definitely going to follow this.
Eden of the East: definitely one to watch... It's probably going to be action drama and which emphasize on the story. The 1st episode is... hm.. charming perhaps? :)
Saki: mahjong meets school life anime... 1st episode basically about cute girls playing mahjong, with one of them having a habit to score zero on every game.. (on mahjong the score can be + or -, so having zero as the score doesn't mean that you'll be at the bottom). I'll definitely follow this...
Mazinger: very old school anime style graphics.... makes Casshern Sins look new :) Anyway, this is a super robot anime, probably a remake of the old Mazinger.
Cross Game: haven't watch it... probably going to be like the previous author works (H2, Touch). Basically it's a romance anime with baseball as the background story... If you like romance anime and don't mind the baseball stuff, this is the one to watch.
Sengoku Basara: testosterone anime! it's an anime based on games of the same name. Full of action and probably will have some strategy elements thrown into it (because of the war setting).
Asura Cryin': A mecha anime perhaps? don't know what the premises are, but based on the 1st episode it's about a kid that have been trusted with a mecha... It have ghost and magic, so it's a mecha with a bit fantasy twist.
Shangri-la: Action anime with a cute girl as the main character... nice background story, nice action, nice animation... overall a good anime.
Basquash!: Stupid premise... but once you watch it... IT'S GOOD! Based on the 1st episode only, it's the best spring2009 anime... Colorful and fluid animation, quirky character design, fitting music.... Definitely going to follow this. Btw, the premise is about robot playing basketball... :)
I already mention K-ON and FMA on my previous post... basically K-ON is moe :) (ok, it's a school live anime about 4 girls forming a band... funny and cute..) and FMA is.. well.. action shounen anime with a good deep story (the setting is a world where you have alchemist instead of regular science... kinda like magic). FMA story is a bit more mature and complex than your regular shounen anime.
As for my recommendation, definitely try Basquash!.. even if you don't like the story at least you can marvel at the graphics.
Other recommended anime would be Eden of the East, Valkyria Chronicles, K-ON, FMA.
My personal favorites would be all of the above recommendation + Saki.
Btw, I must stress that this is based on 1st episode only (okay, K-ON based on the 1st two episodes). My opinion can change and will change once all of this animes goes further.
Yep just watched the couple of releases for Phantom and I am going to like it. It feels similar to Darker than Black and that is always a good thing.
Watched a new anime called guin saga...reminds me of Escaflowne a bit I dont know why...could be the setting. Looks interesting though I cant stand one of the characters already.
Another one called Shangri-La that people seem to like which I watched...ugh I cant stand the voice of that business contract negotiating character. I still dont get what the story is about but I guess all will be explained in due time as the anime progresses. I am still not feeling this one and I for one dont find the main character to be cute at all...rather I want to throw her own boomerang at her face....ah well.

So y'all know, Phantom is based on a short 3 part OVA called "Phantom The Animation" which is pretty much the whole first season we're getting now.
The OVA was good, but rushed feeling; this anime has got potential. :)
Dunno, the mostly emontion-less child assassin genre is a bit played out.

I think while the child assassin emotionless especially describes Ein's character it does not seem the be the case for Zwei.

I just watched Guin Saga... can be an epic anime. About a guy who is amnesiac and have a leopard head probably try to recover his identity accompanied by twins (and yes, one of them really annoys me). The light novel I believe is still ongoing and according to Wikipedia it already reach 124 volumes! This can be one of those long running animes or could end up hanging/leaving it open-ended (12 Kingdoms... damn..).
Btw, the 1st episode is very nice... It's animated by Satelight which happen to be doing Basquash! also.. and if you watch Basquash!, you will know where they put their resources on the most... :)

Dragon Ball Kai & FullMetal Alchemist 2 : ????????????????????????????????????????
What's the point of DBK which is just the same raw material as DBZ but reorganised, or FMA2, which seems to be the same story as FMA with the same graphics and everything...
???
FMA2 is more heavily based on the manga. The first FMA remained somewhat faithful for its first part but then completely strayed from the manga. Yea sometimes you do get a 'been there' feeling especially with the second episode but that will change.

Dragon Ball Kai basically a retouch of DBZ with a bit of new scene+animation and re-recorded voice + sound effect. The pace going to move faster and they probably will cut most of the filler.
And probably it's for the 20th anniversary of DBZ (yes.. DBZ and not DB).
I may have to check out DBZ Kai

Suryad, looks like you were wrong about Phantom ... zwei is virtually emotionless and utterly unlikeable at this point ... the only satisfying end at this point is for him to wake up to his old personality, realizing what monsters they are killing einz and then turning the gun on himself.

I am enjoying that show so far and I am guessing so is digi :)
I watched the 1080p version of the FF7:AC movie and must say I was blown away. I think that is what that movie should have been earlier on. Blood, dirt, action and stuff that makes sense!
Just watched Kara no Kyoukai episode 5, it really kicked it up a notch. Even though the previous ones were a bit slow this one makes it worth it. Don't see where they can go from here with the other episodes though, I think this will be about it as far as overarching plot is concerned except maybe the love story.

While I agree with Rurouni I would also like to point out that I watched Evangelion 1.11 and was blown away by it. I must confess I dont remember much of the Evangelion series and I Dont understand therefore how the movies (apparently htere will be 3) fit into it...is it just taking the episodic content and making movies out of it?
digitalwanderer
10-Jun-2009, 20:34
In Evangelion 1.11 "the duration is 100min, 2min longer than 1.0 and 1.0 because of the additional scenes. 1.0 was encoded from the 35mm film but 1.11 was created by processing the master digital data."
It's only an additional two minutes of footage from the original movie which was just taking the episodic content and making a movie out of it, the two minutes are probably montages of crucifixes too. ;)
Is everyone following "Eden of the East"? GREAT anime!

I believe that they change it a bit... and iirc, the overall ending would be different from the TV version. Basically 1.0 feels like a recap, but since it's been a long time since the last time I watched Evangelion, it felt kinda fresh for me. And from ANN, it's supposed to be 4 movies and not 3.

Yeah the second one has 2 episodes already released. Loving it so far. THey come out every Friday.
I am hooked on One Piece recently . Grabbed all 421 episodes or whatever the insane number of episodes are and maaaaaan its good.
Railgun is interesting but god that 2nd episode was annoying. But I am sure they are gonna head on to the meaty bit of the story soon.
Guin Saga is interesting been watching that.
FMA is off the hook awesome just like Darker than Black 2.

Eden of East majorly kicks ass! The only problem I had with it was it was too short and the ending left a bit to be desired...but the series is a tie-in to a movie of it coming out soon which will end the series so it'll probably all be good.

There are lots of good animes this season... If you like school life friendship love drama stuff, Kimi ni Todoke definitely the best one this season. Hey, it's made by Production I.G! :)
If you like comedy that have lots of references, then Seitokai no Ichizon is a must. It's like Lucky Star, but one of the lead is male.. surprisingly, the male lead isn't annoying :)
If you want weird stuff, try Trapeze... It's an anime dealing with psychology problem. The visual style is unique. And the nurse is hot :)
If you like action anime, you should take a look at Bantorra and Sacred Blacksmith. Bantorra is darker and more serious, Blacksmith is lighter.
If you like yuri, you should try Sasameki Koto.
And you should try Tegami Bachi... if you aren't sure whether this is good enough for you, then try to watch the OVA first (only 1 ep).
I have been watching Darker than Back Ryuusei no Gemini and while not as good as the first season it is definitely interesting. Also I started watching Bakemonogatari and I am not sure if it was recommended by someone in this forum or not...but I find it quite interesting so far. I have only seen 5 episodes of it so far though. Other than the girl being quite hot I am afraid, I still have yet to be completely sold by the show.
I finished watching Eden of the East and I honestly have no idea wtf is going on in it. It is supposed to be an 11 episode show right? But what the hell...it felt like a whole lot of nothing though I did enjoy the main character quite a lot.

I like DtB2 more than the 1.... :)
As for Eden of the East, they will end the story in the movie. There will be 2 movies which supposed to be a direct continuation of the anime.
For me, Bakemonogatari is one of the best anime this season. The story is unique, the characters have attitude, the graphic is beautiful, and the romance is great.

I found Bakemonogatari to be an exceptionally good series, and it's not quite over yet...they still have a few episodes that they'll release online.
As for East of Eden, what Rurouni said. Including about how fantastic it is. :)
I'm watching Clannad for some reason right now, and I'm on ep 12 of 24 and I still couldn't really tell you what it is about or if I love it or hate it. :???:

Ooooh, lookey what I finded over here! (http://www.uk-anime.net/articles/Winter_2010_anime_preview.html) A 2010 anime preview by the authority his ownself (http://www.uk-anime.net/articles/Winter_2010_anime_preview.html)! :D
The only thing which looks really interesting to me is Katanagatari.
BTW, not exactly anime but Wakfu is pretty interesting to look at ... the animation feels like an upgraded version of Samurai Jack to me, it manages to be a lot more lively than the endless pans and non-animation in anime.

I like Dtb2 don't get me wrong. I love how badass Hei is. And also I am loving his...not to go into details but his transformation and despite his obvious handicap he still is a badass! Somehow it seems like the show seems a bit rushed and Suou falling in love and all that is a bit crappy...taking away from the seriousness/mystery of the show. I am enjoying the soundtrack a lot too. I guess knowing that the show will be over real soon is stopping me from getting so interested haha. It just seems waaaaaaaaaay too short and it needs more Hei action. I really hope they continue the series because it has way more questions than answers at this point!
Bakemonogatari, I have only seen the 1080p releases and it is a fun albeit weird show. I definitely like the interaction between Hitagi and Araragi lol. I love how she is so direct and says some of the most ridiculous stuff with a straight face. I was thinking this was going to fall in to the shounen category but I get the distinct feeling its not. I like the shounen stuff cuz there's a lot of action :) but this is slightly different. I am still liking it though!

don't be tempted to watch the tv version... they fixed some stuff in most of the episodes and probably will fix a lot of stuff in (iirc) ep.11. FYI, they probably out of time/budget in that episode so they use a lot of text insert to fill the gaps (and unlike the intentional text insert, you can actually hear the characters talking... basically they've got the voice but not the animation).
What a freaking letdown the last episode of Dtb2 was! WTF happened!?!?

Out of the current crop of Anime's running, I'm still enjoying Full Metal Alchemist the most. Darker than Black 2 is a bit up and down, we'll see where they are going with it.
Also started Fairy Tales. Amusing, light hearted comic relief. Not bad if you aren't expecting much. :P
And while not new, just finished Denno Coil, great series.

Well DtB2 finished up on Friday I think. Quite a let down. I guess now I am gonna try to catch up with One Piece!

The story itself was good, but the ending is just happening too fast. I thought it gonna be a 24-26 eps judging by the pace.
Apparently there'll be a 2nd season for K-ON! :)

I was actually expecting 13 episodes. And think 13 would have made it a bit better, the last episode seemed so "rushed" and incomplete.
It has the feeling like they had more planned, but ran out of money...

just go to Chartfag's (http://chartfag.wordpress.com/)
What kind of anime do you like to watch?
Durarara!!, Dance in the Vampire Bund, and Katanagatari will definitely be interesting.
I just watched Reform Without Wasted Draws – The Legend of Koizumi... funny short anime featuring some of the nation leaders.
If someone like mystery and murder (at least the 1st ep is like that, don't know about the 2nd one), there's Denpa Teki na Kanojo. It's an ongoing OVA.
Another OVA (originally a webcast, already finished) which I find interesting is Eve no Jikan. It's about androids going to a cafe that doesn't discriminate between human and android.

Heh, had to resurrect this thread even though the thread title is WAY out of date now. :D
But anyone else following Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood?
Getting down to the last few episodes now and my oh my what an ending. Animation style also changed a few months ago making it more dynamic.
But this ending. Gdamn nailbiter cliffhanger each week. :p Can't get enough of it. Action is just off the charts. Not sure what I'm going to do once it's over in about 3 more weeks I think.
Well, at least I won't be sitting here waiting for the next episode week after week as I have been for the past year+. :p
Definitely one of the best anime series ever. Puts the first series halfway based on the manga to shame.

Yeah, like, the last 15 episodes or so have been incredible, and they kept ratcheting things up. We're finally over the crest though, with only a single episode denouement left.

I read that they extended the series out to 66 episides, was originally going to be 64. So 4 more to go. I've only watched up to episode 62 so far.
I'm really interested to see how Greed plays out in this.

Isn't it supposed to play out like the manga? They just released the last chapter of that not long ago, so you can read it all if you like :)

Heh, I actually stopped following the manga in favor of the anime a while back. I'll be picking up the manga again once the anime series is over. :)
Having to choose knowing what's going to happen in the anime or manga, I basically decided I didn't want to know what was going to happen in the anime before I got to watch it. :D
[edit] whoope I was wrong, only 64 episodes after all. :p Man, this was some trip...

Well, that was an amazing journey. I can but wish that something like the Lord of the Rings trilogy could be treated to a 64 episode run like that. Maybe then someone would actually be able to do the books justice.
As good as the Peter Jackson films were, the movie trilogy was still a huge disappointment compared to the books. ~6 hours is just not enough. ~30 hours for a 64 or 66 episode run however might be able to do it. Ah wishful thinking.
Damn, now I don't know what to watch now that the series is over.

What we really need is a 180 episode adaptation of the Silmarillion!
Anyway, FMA: Brotherhood was really awesome. I think it surpasses the original in my mind, if only by grandeur. I still love the original series for its tighter thematic focus on the relationship between Ed and Al, but Brotherhood is telling a much bigger story.

I liked the first Occult Academy, but High School of the Dead left me flat...I'm just not in to zombies.
I haven't checked out any others yet, but I need to find a few new ones this season to follow....last season was too dry for me.

Just watched the first episode of Black Lagoon - Roberta's Blood Trail. Looks like it's going to be a 5 episode OVA. Was a fan of the first series, and so far this one looks like it should be pretty good. Only 5 episodes though. :(
Poopy thing with OVA's is they aren't weekly. This one is going to take until March of next year to finish up. All the waiting and cliffhangers. /sigh. :p

The director likes jiggling breast!
Link NSFW http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2010/07/11/i-want-jiggling-breasts-in-every-scene/
As for last season..
Heroman is actually pretty good. The story is nice, the fight is good... a bit too American-ish, but that is to be expected.
Hakuoki for me is one of the biggest surprise. I thought it would be bad and boring, but turns out better than expected.
The only one that really didn't live up to my expectation is Angel Beats.
Maid-sama is definitely a good fun... kinda have that Skip Beat vibe compared to Kimi ni Todoke as far as shoujo anime goes.
Working is one of the best clean comedy anime last season on par with K-On 2nd season.
Most of the ecchi stuff are also surprisingly good... Ichiban, Mayoi, B Gata.
As for this season...
Mitsudomoe.. Kinda like Kodomo no Jikan, but cleaner (not clean, just cleaner) and the comedy is more physical. Basically it's about kids (in elementary school) bullying their teacher. I can't stand to watch Kodomo no Jikan, but I have no problem watching Mitsudomoe, so it's definitely good for me :)
Ookamisan... this is a nice one. Kinda like Toradora with more action and less romance. And it has Kuroko VA (from Railgun) as the narrator, which is nice :)
Seitokai Yakuindomo... a comedy anime focused on the student council. It's shaping up to be the funniest anime this season. Sometimes the jokes are a bit naughty, but it's far from ecchi.
Shiki... hm... looks good, but it's difficult to judge this kind of anime based on 1ep alone.
Campanella... harem anime in a fantasy setting. 1st episode kinda so so, but 2nd one is good. The twins are really funny.
Amagami SS... if you like romance anime then this season you don't have any other choice. So far so good.
Legend of the Legendary Heroes (or preferably LoL Heroes :)... If you like Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou, you probably will like this. It's an action anime with lots of comedy. So far it's less ecchi. Fantasy setting with the standard warrior, mage, etc.
Of course, other than that I also watch HSotD (Qwaser is winning the almost hentai action anime.. I really hope HSotD to be better than Qwaser. It's definitely more gory, just hoping the story can keep up ), Occult Academy (surprisingly good), SW2 and Sekirei 2.
Some anime that I need to mention...
2nd Evangelion movie (Evangelion 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance) is awesome! It's a lot different than the original, definitely more exciting than 1.11 (which is mostly a recap) and Mari is a badass.
Tales of Vesperia is very good. Much better than those other Tales animes.
Katanagatari... nice action anime, nice characters and Cheerio! :) Definitely a quality anime.
What I miss the most this past season is mecha anime... Where is that damn Gundam Unicorn 2nd ep? Yes, there's Heroman, but it's more like a monster anime than mecha. A couple of season ago we had Asura Cryin'... but again, it felt more like a monster anime than mecha. I want to watch a bunch of piloted robots fighting each other. Of course Evangelion is awesome, but I need more.

Currently we are constantly researching how to better portray realistically the jiggling breast.
I'm in the wrong line of work. :p
Thanks also for that list of Anime, going to have to check some of that out now that I'm mostly done with work for this year. One week til I head back to the states then back to the grind next spring. :p
