View Full Version : Enter the Matrix - is this some kind of joke?
Seriously... it should be a joke. A VERY BAD JOKE.
After two days (firts two mission), my thoughts:
Cons
1. RIDICULOUS GRAPHICS! Outdated like HL1-style, very primitive textures or no textures at all, looks like really crappy ported low-level console game.
2. There's no general enviromental sound (DD5.1, 4.1) options at all - only stupid EAX ADVANCED HD or some similar shitty Creative-crap. Sounds are fine, though.
3. Horrible controlling - nobody tried this at Shiny? Really stupid 3rd person movement and the first person mode.... pffff.... that is UNUSABLE at all.
4. Basic engine bugs (half of your character is inside the wall, etc).
5. Absolutely repetative maps with VERY-VERY PRIMITIVE enviroment (corridor, room, corridor, room, corridor, room, all with one desk and one chair or fully empty, etc).
6. Really dumb real ingame film parts - who the hell needs them? Prabably that's why it takes up ~3.5GB from your hard drive! Of course, with this piece of crap engine they had no choice: they HAD TO use this outdated technique. In 2003 - it's so stupid.
7. No free saving. Why?
THE ONLY PRO
1.is the fancy kung-fu movement (however it's almost independent from you!) and the continuous action. That's all where the feeling comes from...
Final conclusion
SHAME ON YOU SHINY! Shame on you! AND SHAME ON YOU INFOGRAMES AKA ATARI!
Shame on both of you.
PS: Usually I always buy a game if I tried it and I liked it. I never gonna buy this piece of sh*t.

Your opinion is wrong.
BTW, have you never played a Shiny game before? You sound like you were expecting more than you should have been.
I haven't played EtM yet, but I knew it wouldn't be too enjoyable when I heard the game was going to do all of the attack moves for you, you just pushed the "attack" button. What fun is a fighting game if you can't slap the buttons?
Not to mention the ultimate sillyness; when entering slow-motion mode (aka "focus") the game caps your framerate at 15fps. Yes, that's how Shiny programmed slow-motion! Worst. Programming. Ever.

Heh, actually, EAX ADVANCED HD is really good. :) Too bad only Audigy/2 support it...

Actually, it doesn't work even on A2.

It isn't a joke.
This is what happens when Hollywood gets involved in the actual development of a game.
Expect more of this tripe in the years to come.
Hollywood will be the death of the gaming industry.
No, I think this is what happens when Shiny gets involved in the game industry. They should have stuck to EWJ.
In anycase, they should have gotten a better game development team who has a lot of experience with this type of game or experience making simillar game(s). The folks who did Max Payne perhaps?

You mean Remedy? Given the overall movie feal of Max Payne, I think that would have been an excellent idea.
Thank you, KnightBreed.
I did infact mean Remedy, but I couldn't recall the name, silly me. I hope Mr. Maki doesn't get offended.

If you want to play a Matrix like game, get a copy of Max Payne which should be pretty cheap now and download a Matrix mod for it. It does wonders. :)

I wholly expected it. Give a second-rate games company a humongous-budget multiplatform production, and throw in a ton of famous actors and a megaton of media hype... what can you expect other than a shitty game?
For all the "hacker" references in The Matrix, you must remember that the Wachowskis are more philosophers than computer scientists. They don't have a clue about video games.

People have been reporting that the PC Port sucks. The X-Box version seems ok. It's a little absurd to say its HL1 level. More like Q3 level. The character models are atleast up to snuff vis-a-vis PC FPSes. Average shooter on PC has really blocky character models with poor facial animation.

Wachowski's are morons for letting Shiny get the rights for a video game. They should have done like every other movie company and given the rights to EA... Still might not have been an AAA game, but it would have been leagues ahead of this shit.

None of those you listed have decidedly "better" player models. They're about the same. Even Unreal2's models are unimpressive. (the chick, for example, is nothing special), atleast when you compare it to Dead or Alive, Shen Mue, or FFX.
Look, no one is saying ETM's graphics are top notch. In fact, I dislike Shiny as a company and have never liked any of their games (I dislike Dave Perry as a personality even more), but it is quite ludicrous to say that this (http://mediaviewer.ign.com/ignMediaPage.jsp?media_id=1657866&object_id=14838& channel_id=73&page_title=Enter+the+Matrix&adString =network%3Dign%26site%3Dxbox%26pagetype%3Dmediaimg thin&return_url=http%3A%2F%2Fxbox.ign.com%2Fobject s%2F014%2F014838.html) or this (http://mediaviewer.ign.com/ignMediaPage.jsp?media_id=1706157&object_id=14838& channel_id=73&page_title=Enter+the+Matrix&adString =network%3Dign%26site%3Dxbox%26pagetype%3Dmediaimg thin&return_url=http%3A%2F%2Fxbox.ign.com%2Fobject s%2F014%2F014838.html) for example is "Half Life 1 quality"
But if I look here (http://mediaviewer.ign.com/ignMediaPage.jsp?media_id=1595077&object_id=17255& channel_id=59&page_title=No+One+Lives+Forever+2%3A +A+Spy+in+H.A.R.M.%27s+Way&adString=network%3Dign% 26site%3Dpchub%26pagetype%3Dmediaimgthin&return_ur l=http%3A%2F%2Fpc.ign.com%2Fobjects%2F017%2F017255 .html) and here (http://mediaviewer.ign.com/ignMediaPage.jsp?media_id=1572106&object_id=17255& channel_id=59&page_title=No+One+Lives+Forever+2%3A +A+Spy+in+H.A.R.M.%27s+Way&adString=network%3Dign% 26site%3Dpchub%26pagetype%3Dmediaimgthin&return_ur l=http%3A%2F%2Fpc.ign.com%2Fobjects%2F017%2F017255 .html) or here (http://mediaviewer.ign.com/ignMediaPage.jsp?media_id=1572107&object_id=17255& channel_id=59&page_title=No+One+Lives+Forever+2%3A +A+Spy+in+H.A.R.M.%27s+Way&adString=network%3Dign% 26site%3Dpchub%26pagetype%3Dmediaimgthin&return_ur l=http%3A%2F%2Fpc.ign.com%2Fobjects%2F017%2F017255 .html) I am not blown away by obvious differences in level of detail on the models. Cate might be aesthetically more pleasing to look at vs Jada Pinkett, but her # of polygons and textures details are not blowing me away. In actuality, Niobe has more detail in the hair, and her opponent's nose looks better those enemies in NOLF2, Cate's jacket lapels are blurry , a low detail texture.
Look it's one thing to say that ETM isn't a top notch game or visuals, it's quite another to engage in hyperbole and compare it to HL1 level model detail. It doesn't wash.
those have to be extremely touched up pictures cause I have played through more then 1/2 the game and it isn't anywhere near as good looking as that with everything on the highest values  the gameplay isn't too bad but its just not a great game at best its good...

I believe when someone says "every shooter on PC has blocky character models and poor facial animation", the assumption is that they're going to be comparing the same genre on other platforms. Mentioning DOA, FFX (which has its share of poor texturing beyond the main character) and Shen Meu (aside from face shots, the models are hardly anything special) is ridiculous when comparing it to an FPS. Especially when FPS'w like RTCF and MOH had their polygon count of players cut down for the console versions.

Perhaps. But the difference is in FPS's where the player models aren't DOA callibur (which they aren't going to be for obvious reasons), the world detail compensates. That doesn't appear to be the case with the Matrix - bland character models, but extremely bland environment. Plus your screenshots appear to be the exception. I've seen screaming for PS2/Xbox/Gamecube/PC owners about the pathetic graphical quality.
And secondly - square wheels?!!

Look, I have the X-Box version, I just showed it to a few friends about an hour ago. The car did not have square wheels, they were quite smooth. And when I fought an Agent, I specifically looked at both Niobe's model and the Agent's, and they were easily more detailed than most FPSes (which usually cheat anyway by making the whole body some stupid looking cubist powersuit, and only spending polygons on the head and weapon).
I can easily load up by X-Box version and take some pics with my digicam. I think it would be more fair to say that ETM has Max Payne level graphics, not HL1 level graphics. Just look at the post office lobby. The rest is bland I agree.
if I were forced to go back and analyze Halo, I would have to agree also that many of the levels are pretty bland. Ditto for MGS2. I hardly see the point of this discussion. With the except of FPS PC games being released this year (Half Life 2, D3, etc) I don't find most FPSes to be all that detailed.
DemoCoder: Metroid Prime is something of a FPS and that game is as detailed as hell.

The reviewers who talked about the square wheels, and the screenshots of the square wheels, were from the GameCube and PS2 versions.
The Xbox version doesn't have the severe LOD problem that the GCN/PS2 ports have.

You gotta be kidding... I have TOO and it's STILL SUX.
MUCH less detailed than an average PC game. (Generally: ALL the ports has lowered polygon counts, lowered textures.)

Yeah and the whole body looks like a brick.

What? The reflective floor? C'mon, I've seen this MANY times in the last 2-3 years. Everything else is a cheap, shitty, two-cents-style stupid ridiculous so-called "textures" - forget it. This game is A BAD JOKE. Shiny is A BAD JOKE, not a game company. Pre-pos-terous.

Did you play ANY of the last 6-8 months FPS games? I don't think so...
Oh, yeah.. reflective floors are 2000 stuff. Deus Ex and Perfect Dark had 'em.. the latter being a N64 game.

I think this discussion is pretty well summed up by the fact that we are comparing it to Half-Life 1, Quake 3, and Max Payne. ^^
No one actually thinks of comparing ETM to non-ugly games like Jedi Knight 2, RTCW, Halo, UT2k3, Splinter Cell etc. ^_^
Supposedly they shipped 4 million copies of this game (on multiple platforms naturally). Could this be the next E.T?
