The second alpha release of Ubuntu 8.04 is now available

Welcome to Hardy Heron Alpha-2, which will in time become Ubuntu 8.04.

Pre-releases of Hardy are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a stable system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs.

Alpha 2 is the second in a series of milestone CD images that will be released throughout the Hardy development cycle. The Alpha images are known to be reasonably free of showstopper CD build or installer bugs, while representing a very recent snapshot of Hardy. You can download it here:

Kubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron) Alpha 2 (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/releases/hardy/alpha-2/) (Kubuntu)
Edubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron) Alpha 2 (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/edubuntu/releases/hardy/alpha-2/) (Edubuntu)
Ubuntu-JeOS 8.04 (Hardy Heron) Alpha 2 (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/jeos/releases/hardy/alpha-2/) (Ubuntu JeOS)
Xubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) Alpha 2 (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/hardy/alpha-2/) (Xubuntu)
Gobuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) Alpha 2 (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/gobuntu/releases/hardy/alpha-2/) (Gobuntu)
Ubuntu-Studio 8.04 (Hardy Heron) Alpha 2 (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/releases/hardy/alpha-2/) (UbuntuStudio)

See http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Mirrors for a list of mirrors.

Alpha 2 includes several new features that are ready for large-scale testing. Please refer to Hardy Heron Alpha 2 Test Release | Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/hardy/alpha2) for information on changes in Ubuntu and https://wiki.kubuntu.org/HardyHeron/Alpha2/Kubuntu for changes in Kubuntu.

This is quite an early set of images, so you should expect some bugs. For a list of known bugs (that you don't need to report if you encounter), please see: Hardy Heron Alpha 2 Test Release | Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/hardy/alpha2)

If you're interested in following the changes as we further develop Hardy, have a look at the hardy-changes mailing list:

http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/hardy-changes

We also suggest that you subscribe to the ubuntu-devel-announce list if you're interested in following Ubuntu development. This is a low-traffic list (a few posts a week) carrying announcements of approved specifications, policy changes, alpha releases, and other interesting events.

Bug reports should go to the Ubuntu bug tracker:

Well, 8.04 LTS final is out since somewhere in April.

I've just installed it and am very much impressed :D

Previously had lots of problems in the past with trying to get Linux to work & particularly not to crash somewhere between 30secs & 30mins after boot on this PC.

This time was very nearly all good & I've not had a single lock-up :D

Good stuff
-officially listed mirror on my ISP :)
-install went without a hitch
-boot worked
-automatically detected my WLAN & ATI 3870, WLAN automatically enabled, had to do like 3 clicks & wait for it to download ATI driver to enable the GPU.
-Yay, functioning OGL screensavers :)
-integrated Compiz flashy effects so combined with working 3D acceleration I have bouncy stretchy windows oh yeah :D
-music & internet going ok
-nice easy to edit theme in my choice of colour

The not so good
-tried to play a DVD, auto detected it needed to download a codec & did so with a few clicks but unfortunately for some reason fails to actually play though :( I'm sure i'll be able to work it out somehow...
-for some reason I seem to have to re-enter my WPA key each time I boot up because it doesn't seem to re-activate :-/

Been working great here, except it doesn't seem to like the F keys on my Apple keyboard. Oh well, I'll figure that out sometime...

ahha, add echo -n 0x02 > /sys/module/hid/parameters/pb_fnmode to /etc/rc.local

My only issues were with the need for manual permissions to access other partitions, which I usually have a lot of things loaded from and the need to constantly set vm.mmap_min_addr to zero and back to 2^16 just to be able to use Wine. Other than that Hardy Heron is incredibly nice and fits on a single CD. I have installed it onto my laptop and my Desktop and it is running wonderfully.
