It seems that if you want to buy Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on Steam and live in the USA it will cost you $49.95, but in Europe that price is $69.95 + tax. According to the original story on gaming-resources.com, it would seem Valve have confirmed that prices on Steam are set by the publisher, in this case Activision

Well thanks Activision you greedy Bar Stewards......

I blame France. No particular reason, but I'm sticking with it.

Well, it seems all those publishers and hardware vendors feel that US customers are poor, and EU customers are rich.

Either that, or they don't really want to sell their stuff in the Old World. ;)

Valve did the same thing with the orange box there was a big thread about it already.

And now complaints about crysis.

Poor guys in the EU have to pay more for it just like everyone in the US pays more than those in the far east. Sucks to have such compartmentalization in a market doesn't it?

Btw, I've noticed this with other Activision games on Steam too. For instance the Steam version of ETQW for me shows up as costing 55 Euros. For US-based players it shows up as 50 Dollars. At the current exchange rates, 55 Euros ~= 80 dollars.

I can (somewhat) understand paying 50 Euros in a brick & mortar store for a game that costs 50 Dollars in the US because of localisation, country-specific support lines, etc. However, charging more Euros for a _digital_ download?

I simply think they want to give their fellow countrymen a good bargain, and want all those bloody foreigners to pay for anything else they can get away with. That might help their stock value as well, as the interest is in US markets share first and foremost.

No. If you think these corporations care about their countrymen you are naive. They only care about profits and will charge whatever they think the market will bear. They charge most in EU b/c everything is more expensive there and the current exchange rater is not reflective of reality of buying goods.
