View Full Version : PC's best football game?
And I'm talking about the real football, meaning the game where you move the round ball with your feet :) Which one is the best? Fifa '07, Pro Evo 6 or something else?

The one I hear the most about seems to be Football Manager but I've not had to time to really get into it. I'm not sure that you play the games like you would in Winning Eleven or Fifa think its more tactical and doing all the behind the scenes stuff.

Well, I'm a huge fan of Football Manager so I know the game :) But this time I'm looking for a game like PES where you actually control the players. In FM you're just the manager.

Sadly PC's are getting butchered Fifa versions compared to the X360.
(Fifa 07 on the X360 is completely different from ps2\xbox\gc\pc versions, muuuuch better, and the Fifa 08 demo is very good, basically PES with licencing and better graphics).
For PC, PES is the only way to go if you like a tad of realism (they don't have licencing thought, so most teams have fictional names, same goes for players, heard there are some mods out for that thought). Fifa on pc\old gen consoles is very arcade (still fun) and has better graphics.
and as allready stated, Football Manager RULES!

Winning Eleven is fun on Xbox, no idea about PC though...

Last football video games I enjoyed were Italy '90 for the MegaDrive/Genesis and Sensible Soccer for the amiga. Dunno, everyone raves about PES other games but I just can't get into them.

Pro Evo 5, preferred it to Pro Evo 6 (which is Winning Eleven isn't it?)
PES series ... Have PES6 installed on PC but I like PES5 much more ... Something's wrong with PES6 ... I wish Konami to fix it and give us soccer simulation with next PES ...

PES6 is superior in multiplayer and online to PES5, in my considerable opinion as someone who has played ISS/PES year in year out since the SNES days (though ISS Pro was the first proper iteration of what is now known as PES). The main problem with PES6 is the weak single player game and the way pace has been handicapped to compensate for the more fluid dribbling. At the same time, the multiplayer is only good (and when it's good, it's great) if you play against someone who trieds to play classy passing football rather than play 4-3-3 and bomb it down the wings every time before cutting it back for an unfairly easy free shot at goal.
I'd say wait till the next in each series of game is out. FIFA is meant to be out on the 28th IIRC, with PES following a month later. Grab what demos you can, and let those tide you over until you know which game you want.
My suggestion is that you get both. FIFA isn't nearly as bad as it used to be, and people who give kneejerk responses like "FIFA sucks" tend to have either played the game as if it's PES (which is like complaining that Splinter Cell doesn't control like Metal Gear Solid) and given up after a couple of goes, or are simply assuming it to still be pap because that's what everyone has been shouting for the past ten years or so (a bit like calling all Russians 'Commies' or Germans 'Nazis' because of their unfortunate history).
Thank you all for the answers.
It seems that the PES seems to be the way to go but I'm not sure yet if the right version is 5 or 6 :) I'm going to play this game with a friend or two as a kind of a "party game" so I'm not in a need of a good single player.
But again, thanks!

Sensible Soccer! ;)
ok, i'll shut up now... /me skulks off
ps. i would go along with Football Manager, but only because of my history and affinity with the ZX Spectrum forerunner of the same name http://youtube.com/watch?v=A13M4_If_4I - pure class! the only game that ever made me shout at the screen, just as folks do when watching a real match on tv.
Regarding PES 5 vs. PES 6 single player: Although gameplay-wise it might not be so clear cut, the major reason why I vastly prefer PES 6 is - the referee!
I just couldn't stand it anymore, my players being booked or sent off for (mostly) almost nothing, and the opponent's players just getting that annoying tap on the back (if the ref even called foul) for brutally savaging my strikers in front of the goal. ARGH!

Does PC still get the last-gen version of FIFA 2008?
Its got to be PES6 right now, PES5 had that horrendous forced side stepping and all FIFA games are simply crap.
If you can wait for a month then you could just skip them all and get PES7 (out mid October). This time around the PC version is going next gen rather then staying as a modified PS2 port like previous versions.
Oh and BTW while a lot of teams in PES aren't licensed you can download some very good patches that make everything in the game 100% official looking.

Is it identical to the versions the 360 and PS3 will be getting, or hopefully graphically better?

Its based on the 360 version this time round. So its pretty much identical graphically, appart from the fact that you can run in a higher resolution with AA of course :)
I didn't want to start a new thread about this so I thought I'd ask it here. What happened to the Pro Evo 2008 Wii thread? It used to be here: http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?p=1078308
But now that link goes to a totally different thread and the thread about the game has been totally removed from the forum AFAICS. Which seems pretty bizarre....
