Hmmm, can we have philosophical discussions about software piracy here? :|

I wonder if we can chat about that here too. Last time I even mentioned warez I got an infraction.

Im assuming that we can talk about warez (issues and what nots), just not where to get them, or how to bypass copy protection.

You could always discuss software piracy before. The problem is that most people don't want to discuss the why, just the what, when, where and hows.

I'd say a mixture between what Epic said and Richard said. We'll try to be moderately less uptight in here about philosophical warez discussions, even if folks want to argue the ethics from a different side of the fence than we as a site sit on.

But getting into specifics of "how/where/I just did on hot new release x" will still be ruthlessly crushed with a fist of iron. . .just like always.

I'm not so sure that post wouldn't get an infraction again even here. Still pretty marginal. Maybe not. Probably depends on the mood of the mod.

Just for reference, your infracted post said:

Yea because every warez monkey has such a fast pipe and also pays for Usenet(Not to mention the download caps many have to deal with).

I used to pay for Usenet but one day it dawned on me that paying for warez defeats the purpose of warez so I P2P now. Public trackers are slow but if you can get yourself into a private tracker the new releases there max out my 10Mbit line with the only annoyance being you have to seed back what you took but if you're struggling there there's always cheating apps out there(only so much honor involved in piracy ).

Oh and in case some of you are getting your underwears in a bunch I bought Bioshock. I admittenly would've warezed it since it had no mp but the Big Daddy figurine enticed me to buy it.

The bit that I'd find iffy even here would be about private trackers and how to game them. That's a bit too specific and crosses over into something other than a discussion of ethics. Actually, even "usenet" is arguably a pointer for "where to go to be a bad, bad boy". So, it's pretty marginal even here. I didn't give the infraction in the first place, so I don't know which specific elements caused the mod to stomp it. Tho I'd agree with his judgement unquestionably in any other forum than this one, and still might in this one. . . .you'll have to have some patience as we develop standards here. We'll try to have some patience too. This doesn't mean warnings or infractions won't be given out here as we develop those standards, but they won't get you banned unless there is a chronic issue that the user refuses to address after repeated efforts to point out the problem.

Well, I cheated. When Digi first posted in the Comcast thread this forum didn't exist and the Comcast thread wasn't in it. So he may have come back to the Comcast thread through his User CP for subscribed threads and then scratched his head.

In fact, the Comcast thread was the proximate cause for the birth of this forum, tho the possibility of creating such a forum has been under reocurring discussion for many months (pretty much any time a touchy tech subject comes up). Rys even mentioned such a possibility in Site Feedback some months ago.

Let me think about that for a bit, before responding...

:) Great initiative, guys!
