I thought I had reached the point where I had stopped labelling things in absolutes (as in "best song ever" etc), but this movie has moved me so profoundly that I have to label this film in absolutes: Donnie Darko is the best film I have ever seen.

After watching the movie the first time you get the impression that the source of the weird things apparently happening is Donnie's schizophrenia (Ã* la Beautiful Mind), but after visiting the website and seeing the prolonged DVD-version you really understand how incredibly intelligent and beautiful (in a sad way) the story is. Go see it - at least twice! :)

Which are your favorite movies? Why?

Once Upon A Time in The West. Best opening sequence EVER (*FACT*!), and Henry Fonda as a bad guy!.

Donnie Darko is an amazing film... also top ten, possibly even top five for me. One of the most refreshing movies of the last 20 years, IMO. Great surround and music track too - love the tunes and that "all-channel" effect for Frank's voise made me crap myself! Seen it about 4-5 times in six months and am still not tiring of it (although Drew Barrymore is getting more and more irritating with each viewing, lol).

Fight Club is probably my favourite. Pulp Fiction, The Shawshank Redemption, Saving Private Ryan and 2001:ASO would rank pretty high up there as well.

Donnie Darko is an excellent film, although I am not sure how much repeat watchability it has.
If you like this I would recommend Memento, as another film which makes you think quite a bit.

Other top films
The Green Mile,
Jay and Silent Bob strike back (what can I say, I have a puerile sense of humour),

Others too numerous to mention. Picking a favorite film is impossible for me, as it depends on your mood, and how recently you watched it last etc.

I still rate the Shawshank Redemption as one of my favourites, excellently done film. The Green Mile was in a similar vein, but its length curtails the repeatability for me.

The Matrix still ranks as my favourite action film - very stylishly done IMO and what ultimately prompted me to buy a DVD player after I saw it!

I got so many "favourites" that i dont know where to start :)

Most impressive film:
"Star Wars" - The Original.. I was 7 years old when i watched it the first time ... in french and on TV.... didnt understand a lot of what they said but was impressed nevertheless.

Scariest:
"Aliens" - same as above... we had a french army television station nearby in cologne that showed these film in french... hehe... this was the scariest movie for me ever.

best action with cars:
by a HUGE lead: "Ronin"
I dont know how well known this film is in the USA or around the world, but the driving scenes of the car-chases in Paris and other french cities are in a league of its own.

BEST film:
My perhaps favourite film is "The Devils Advocate" with Al Pacino as the Devil himself. That film has a great finale with a 15 minute dialoge between the devil and his son. I just love to watch those final minutes over and over again.

ok.. now its time to watch the Opteron launch :)

I saw Donnie Darko for the first time last week. I agree that it was an excellent film and I would like to see it again. It's one of those films that let you decide what it was all about, and the meaning of it. I'm not sure that I could watch it five times though

Dave, I have to agree with you there. The Shawshank Redemption is a superb film. Ranks as one of my favourite films ever. It's just so deep...

The Matrix also prompted my to buy a DVD player, over 3 years ago (and its still going strong). One of my parents’ friends came back from America with it on DVD as a present.

But I think my favourite film ever has to be Last of The Mohicans. You have to watch it in its uncut version though. My sister has just moved to Connecticut, so next time I visit I have to go up the Hudson River, past Albany, and visit the falls. I also have some relatives that are Native Americans, living in British Columbia, so maybe that's also why I can relate to the film...

Possibly my top 10, in no particular order:

Memento
Fight Club
The Thin Red Line
Ghost Dog
O Brother Where Art Thou
I Kina Spiser De Hunde
Ronin
Terminator 2 - Judgment Day (The Ultimate Edition DVD)
The Matrix
Snatch

Was I supposed to give a reason why these are great? Later, maybe…

Once Upon A Time in The West. ...

this one is absolutely all time greatest western. (and not least because of Morricone's excelent sound track.)

for me choosing a best movie ever is a way too hard... I am animation / cartoon freak, so "normal" movies are usually just "ok." (though, there is ones that are cleary better than the rest.) But, I'll pick a one in any case:

The Usual Suspects.
the idea is simply fantastic.

I agree with Captain Chickenpants...it really depends on my mood of the moment and how recently I've seen it blah blah etc.

Certainly in my favorites are: The Star Wars movies (that's pretty much a given  ), LOTR, ET, The Abyss, A Beautiful Mind, The Omen, Black Hawk Down, 8 Mile, Braveheart, Oscar (with Silvester Stallone...it's hysterical)...

And I love watching old b&w movies on Turner Classic Movies...The African Queen, It's a Wonderful Life, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (absolutely wonderful movie), The Birds...

Basically, I watch all types of movies, and have favorites in pretty much each genre. I am not a fan of mysteries, though. Ususally, I don't care "who dunnit" :)

If you're going for camp movies and love Tim Curry, may as well go for The Rocky Horror Picture Show. ;)

My faves:
-Life of Brian. So deliciously sacreligious.
-Blade Runner. Quality Sci-Fi in a believable world.
-O Brother Where Art Thou. Love the soundtrack.
-Raiders of the Lost Ark. Quality "Adventure" Yarn
-Fight Club. Interesting characters with an even more interesting twist.
-Aliens. Quality mindless sci-fi/shoot em up.

Yeah Aliens(with an s) was definitely ahead of its time a real terror classic. My bro and I still tout it as best horror.

The Matrix was an amazing show. Best sci - fi to date IMO. Still don't like Reeves though.

Saving Private Ryan..... simply the best portrayal of actual WW2 experience horribly graphic and possibly one of Tom Hanks best movies ever.

Eddy Murphy's "Delirious" was absolutely the most funny movie I have ever watched. Although a stand up routine and low budget its guaranteed to be a gut buster.

With regards to Star Trek.... I always thought the Wrath of Kahn was for its time the best of the Star Trek movies.

Loved Dune, most Star Wars movies, Blade Runner, Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump, The Burbs, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Gladiator, Seven, The Truman Show, The Abyss, Lord of the Rings, Two Towers, Good Will Hunting, Reservoir Dogs, Silence of the Lambs, Scarface,
.... argh there are so many movies worth mentioning.

Absolutely the worst movie ever..... "The Blair Witch Project."

The seven samurai = the seven hours of sleep.

Ummm, well, not really, but it took a long time to get moving. Plus it was so foreign it was difficult to relate or understand what was motivating people.

I second both those items. Aliens was scary b/c I was young but it scared me to death. Ronin is great so I left that on as well.

I still loved T2, and although the FX's are dated now it was very nice at the time.

edit: Yes Mr. Smith goes to washington is a nice movie, I watched it myself then in high school the teacher played it and I told people I liked it they thought I was a weirdo lol.

Star Wars -- no other film will ever have the impact this one did on the 12-year-old.

The Sound of Music -- all-time favorite feel-good movie.

Excalibur -- first decent medieval knights 'n castles film I ever saw. Great soundtrack. 8)

Forrest Gump -- because I've been a Tom Hanks fan since Bosom Buddies.

The Prince of Tides -- I am Tom Wingo.

Aliens -- best sci-fi action film.

ET -- I was 18 and felt like a child again while watching it for the first time.

Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet -- favorite love story.

I have not yet seen Donnie Darko, but I'm beginning to understand that I should.

"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", "Hero", "At the Height of Summer" are all visually beautiful films. PJ's Lord of the Rings movies are breathtakingly grandiose. "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" is extremely stylish and just cool.
But generally, I'm a sucker for Kubrick. "A Clockwork Orange" has been mentioned, and that may be my all over favourite. But let's not forget the marvellous "Barry Lyndon" and (to a somewhat lesser extent) "The Shining".
I have yet to find any other director so capable of getting me to stare in amazement at the screen; not at fancy special effects, but at the pure excellence of the movie itself.
