I've just upgraded my main rig to an Alienware Core 2 Duo box. I thought I might as well get the SMP client up and running but the f@h website suggests that the SMP client isn't very good with 4 core machines.

Basically has anybody had any experience with it? I've got three cores running Boinc and one running the regular flavour f@h client.

I had at one point set up a dual XEON 5355 (Core 2 Quad @ 2.66Ghz for 8 total 2.666 GHz cpus) to have 8 copies of F@H running.

It was a folding beast that helped stave off Geo overtaking me for a while.

But I ran 8 copies of the command line client.

Why are you running 2 programs per core? The Core 2 Duo cpus do NOT have HyperThreading. The OS only sees it as 2 processors.

Oh yeah, forgot to restart F@H after the last update! Thanks!

It's a four core box. As in four separate processors running at 2.66Ghz.

Been getting some pretty weird download errors recently as well. Lots of errors downloading new cores.

Currently I've only got the PS3 and one PC folding, the new one is just doing SETI.

your post confuses me. is it a core 2 duo or a core 2 quad?

at any rate, the smp client is designed for a 4 core system, not dual core (thought it runs just fine on dual core). you'll notice that when it runs, it runs 4 instances of the core.

also, its crazy to not run the smp client on a dual+ core system. right now there is such a huge point bonus for the smp work units. I get around 300 points per day running 2 instances of the single core client on my x2 4600, but with the smp client i get between 700 and 1000 points per day. people with core 2 duos can get over 2000 points per day on the cache dependent work units

The Core 2 Duo only has 2 cores. The Core 2 Quad has 4 cores.

So what does it have? Does it have a single cpu that is a Core 2 Duo? Or does it have two cpus thare are each Core 2 Duos? Or do you have a single cpu that is a Core 2 Quad? Or do you mean it have a Core 2 Duo but 4 (Quad) of them?

OK, now I've tried the SMP version but all I get is socket errors when it's installing. Any ideas?

Windows firewall, perhaps?

Windows firewall, perhaps?

I disabled the firewall, anti spyware, and anything that would appear to be inhibiting access to ports but it still gives the same error. I'll do a port scan to see whats what but I can't think of anything right now that would cause such behaviour. Shame really I was quite looking forward to seeing the SMP client in action.

Managed to get the SMP client up and running but every time it downloaded the core it failed and just kept on trying over and over again. So I've swapped back to running four command line clients. Maybe it has something to do with Vista?

Dont have a core2quad yet (weird name btw, 2 cores 4...) but ill be getting one end next month if the qe6600 drops to 266 dollars. Must be a real treat having that render my 3d models compared to the crap cpu im on now. 40+ minutes for a test render isnt fun anymore.

I have to admit that it is a real treat having a quad core box. Put a whole new life into Half Life 2, Doom 3, and Quake. And finally Oblivion runs like silk!!

So there is a Boinc version of folding @ home now? I heard there was to be one but I never heard it being launched.. I think that would be great. The regular client never seems to be updated anyway I think I've been running the same version for over 2 1/2 year or somesucxh.
Peace.

Just for clarification on this point: "Core" is Intel's architecture name; the previous mobile chip was Core Duo (Core arch, two processors). The new chip is Core 2 Duo / Quad (Core arch, 2nd gen, Dual or Quad processor)

Make more sense now? :)

What's new on the multi-core front?

Is there going to be a boinc version of F@H?

In a similar vein will there be a neew GPGPU version that supports 8xxx Nvidia and 2xxxHD ATi cards?

Very little seems to be happening. Why isn't science doing more to serve us PC geeks? We're in need of assistance here! *distraught*

Peace.
