pci-e 8x graphics card bandwidth question

I have read that the DFI RD600 based mobo and Asus P5W DH Deluxe both run their pci-e lanes for graphic cards at 8x. Does this have any practical disadvantage (within the next couple of years) when compared to 16x? How much bandwidth might be required in the next couple of years compared to how much b/w is available via 8x ?

The ati x1900xt runs fine with a asrock p4 dual 880pro which has 4 lanes on the pci-e slot
although if you ask Ati they will lie and tell you the card wont work at all with this board....
