Ok, I haven't received my copy of the game yet (should be this weekend) but to those that already have the game, how does it look? I'm talking about IQ, not gameplay. I would presume it shouldn't look all that different from other Q3-based games and knowing that it doesn't use photorealistic textures like RTCW does, I have my reservations (too late of course, since I've already paid my buddy in NYC for him to get it and send to me!).

I already know how to bench the game but I'm just curious about how it looks...

Hmm... I still don't have the game yet (I'm expecting it tomorrow, yay!) but try this :

If the game has an option for enabling aniso filtering, do not enable it. Usually, this option simply means making available as well as enabling the relevant OpenGL extension and this sometimes do not work well in conjunction with driver level tweaking of aniso options. By that I mean that it usually means if you enable the OpenGL extension, it will override driver level aniso setting since the developer may implement a certain degree of aniso thru that extension and it will completely ignore driver aniso levels.

So, if the game has such an aniso option, disable it and then mess with the 3 aniso settings on your GF3. See if this results in IQ. I would also guess that even if you do enable the option in the game (i.e. enable the OGL extension) as well as try the various GF3 aniso options via the drivers, you will see some slight differences in performance without seeing any difference in IQ (the drivers will still inform the chip to perform the required operations and the chip *will* do them but the game may not show the desired IQ differences) but I could be wrong.

Let me know!

it worked thanks!

I did tried to disable aniso in the game option before but to do a restart i resumed the game and it would go back to trilinear. I was little bit confused because in max payne for instance i needed to enable aniso in the game to make it work at all.

So what's the verdict on Jedi Knight II?

I saw a Star Wars arcade game at the bowling alley tonight, and it lit a fire beneath me to play some Star Wars, and Jedi Knight looks promising.

JK2 has very solid use of the StarWars license (which also includes decent implementation of force powers, light saber mechanics, weapons, etc)

the story IMO fell a bit flat.. I didn't seem to care much about the characters, the plot dealing with mystery and conspiracy never pays off past the first couple levels... the plot tends to try and feed off of revenge and anger.. but before the end fight, all of that is lost and the final battle goes from a personal nature to not much more than an afterthought...

the ending of the game also falls pretty flat.. feels more like a tacked-on ending, doesn't really help the story feel any deeper... (it's a "I just killed all the bad guys, I'm taking a vacation" ending)

the level planning is some of the poorest I've seen in any FPS game I've ever played... maps are incredibly linear.. to the point where doors and paths that aren't necessary to your primary goal are simply painted onto walls as textures, and roadblocks scream out at you in every which direction that really hurts the game's atmosphere... the maps themselves are massive.. but don't tend to feel like they're actual environments.. elevators, crates, switches, buttons, and other such things are there generally to take you one step further on the single path to the end of the level.. which only leads to Mario-esque jumping puzzles..

the game really doesn't deserve the 90+%'s that it's getting in most reviews... it makes great use of the license, but it's little more than that.. multiplayer gameplay is less complex than that of single player.. not nearly as polished.. and feels more tacked-on than other MP counterparts of other recent FPSs...

the length is about average.. took maybe 3 days to pass on regular difficulty.. perhaps maybe slightly longer than RtCW..

due to map size, level loads can sometimes be extremely long (talking several minutes here) on moderate systems..

So Rev, what did you think of the game? One update when you hit level three on your site and that's it? The game doesn't even really start until after that :)

I am playing it now.
The textures are not good. They could have used great compressed textures :(

But I liked the gameplay.

Rev, any comments?

When you get quite far on in the game, jumping over stormtroopers and using force pull on them is great fun.
