Hello everyone!
Well, my cheap-o Dlink router has been dying ever our ISP upped our bandwidth to 10Mbps/1Mbps (Down/Up), so I figured it's time to move on to a more flexibel and better system: Reconfiguring my existing server to act as the router / firewall and gateway to the internet.
After concidering multiple solutions, I decided to use Firestarter as the firewall.
Now since the last few days, this has been working pretty alright with the exception of one problem:
Every 12 to 24 hours, my server loses connection to the internet. I presume it has something to do with the DHCP lease, but am not sure. I've tried restarting the network (either by using ifdown / ifup eth1 or /etc/init.d/network restart) but nothing seems to get the connection established again. Only when I physically turn of the cable modem and switch it back on does the connection come back automatically.
I've checked the modem and it is clear that it didn't crash. What else could the problem be?
I've checked the settings in the firewall (firestarter) - the important DNS and DHCP ports are open...
For reference, here's a draft of the network:
[CABLE MODEM]---------(DHCP)[eth1]-[SERVER]-[eth0]-----------[HUB]-------(Static IPs)[CLIENTS]
Any thoughts?
Many thanks in advance! Cheers Phil
