View Full Version : UT2K3 Pixel Shaders
When I play UT2K3 on my 8500, what am I seeing rendered by pixel shading?...at a recent lan party I played the game on a friends GeForce MX machine, and the graphics still looked great, but I know that those cards are only DX7 capable.....can anyone explain this to me?

UT2003 uses pixel shaders to reduce the number of passes needed. It still looks the same as the DX7 path.

I thought UT2k3 didn't use pixel shaders?

I thought UT2k3 didn't use pixel shaders? It uses them some, but not a lot.
Some basic explanations of the use of PS in UT2k3 can be read:
http://www.ati.com/playati/gamemaker/ut2003/
which is rather unsatisfactory though. I had read in a modding forum (lost the link now!) that PS are used to reduce the number of passes for texturing the landscapes - as already pointed out, no "extra" effects are done with them.
Thank you so much for the answers everyone. This is really an awsome forum.

...and thanks for the info/links about UT2k3 pixel shaders ;) :D
Terrain renderer uses pixel shaders to reduce the number of passes. The game has exactly 3 pixel shaders for the terrain (1 for ps.1.1 and 2 for ps.1.4).
