Samsung has just presented their new 17" AMOLED TV Set at KES 2006, as reported by Aving USA (http://aving.net/usa/Exhibition/default.asp?mode=read&c_num=26591&sp_code=35&btb_num=232), and it boasts some interesting specifications. Unlike traditional LCD displays, AMOLEDs have no backlight, and all pixels are lit individually. This allows for minimal power consumption (10W under typical usage scenarios), impressive response times (<0.01ms) and more pixels per inch. The panel also sports a brightness of 400cd/m² and a contrast ratio of 1000:1.
The display's other specifications are respectable (>170° viewing angle etc.), with one potential exception: the panel can only display 262,144 colours (6-bit/component). This is also true of many LCD panels, but does not make it any less undesirable. On the plus side of things, it does not seem that this is directly related to AMOLED technology, and it may thus improve in the future. The other catch is a likely low lifetime, as many current prototypes are in the 1-2k hours range, but it seems likely that this will improve in the future, at least to a certain extent.
The target of most AMOLED displays right now is the cell phone market, and Samsung is going seriously ramp up (http://displaydaily.com/2006/03/23/samsung-confirms-amoled-roll-out/) with that goal in mind sooner rather than later. The cost of 17" panels remains prohibitve however, and their current lifetime makes them useless for everyday service unless you're ready to replace it regularly. This 17" showcase remains a relatively significant step in the right direction, however, as the limit on AMOLEDs was 14" just a very short time ago.
