From techreport:

"Unlike many other GeForce FX 5800 Ultra-based graphics cards, Chaintech's Apogee offering won't use NVIDIA's Dustbuster. Instead, Chaintech has engineered its own cooling solution, which uses two gas turbine-inspired fans and a massive heat sink that generate only 30dB of noise. For reference, the stock GeForce FX cooler has been measured in the neighborhood of 65dB. Chaintech says they have 30dB nailed now, and they're actually tweaking the cooler in an attempt to get noise levels down to 25dB. In the test system on display, the Apogee GeForce FX 5800 Ultra's swanky new cooler didn't sound any louder than the stock fans used on Chaintech's GeForce4 Ti graphics cards, which are reasonably quiet. Still a two slot monster but at least it's noise is bearable.

That looks similar to something nVidia developed in-house.

They arrived upon a solution that used huge a copper heatsink and quiet fan(s), but some OEMs were worried that the boards would snap during shipping so they extended the HS out to the limits of the AGP spec. Weighs about 750-800g apparently.

I think that actually looks pretty cool :)

Shot an e-mail off re. that board and I am reliably informed that it is not the copper monstrosity I mentioned earlier. Not enough copper on it apparently.

Still based on something nVidia developed in-house though, just tarted up a bit... frightening.

Coming soon to a 3D Card near you:

Fuzzy dice hanging from the fan, and fur on the PCB. Oh, and of course a sound card input so that the lights can "pulse" to the music...

Now that's something I might consider spending $400 on :)

Heck anything to differentiate products, I wouldn't mind. The more the merrier
