looking forward to this one! hopefully its better than Starlancer, 'cause even as an old WC-nut I though that one was pretty average...

Well i hate to say this but the game is a stinker. I have the store beta (release to stores about a week ago) and its just bad. I like the combat but the story stinks . Graphics are way dated and reallys its just earth and beyond .

I'm probably gonna give it a shot anyway, people like different kinds of games after all. ;)

Shouldn't there be first reviews by now, can't seem to find any?

The game is good but there is better. The graphics are dated (if you know some where i can get some free space i will take screens for you). The combat though stands out over other space games. I haven't been so happy with combat since wing commander prophcy(btw when is another wing commander coming out) although i'm pissed i can't use a joy stick . The story is okay . The space travel i don't care for though.

The new Elite this game isn't it sorry.

I've finished Freelancer (story anyway), and it took around 24 hours of contiunal gameplay..

The combat is like starlancer and the other WingConmander games, but for the other stuff... definately go elsewhere!

Call me ignorant, but what's X2?

Still looking forward to Freelancer BTW, even if it isn't the "killer" space-sim it should be a refreshing change from the recent crop of games...

Call me ignorant, but what's X2?

the original "X" was a strange game...
if you're looking for a full on StarWars battle like Freespace this is not the game
if you're looking for Newtonian physics and space exploration a-la the later Elite games you won't get that either
"X" is like a pretty pc version of the original Elite
it has lo-res repeated textures and low poly ships yet...
it somehow manages to be incredibly chilled and cinematic
the independent head movement via the numpad is cool, and so is the docking sequence music (a kind of "2001" space ballet type thing)
the sound is atmospheric throughout, especially the constant low engine rumble
it wasn't a fantastic game but the mood was right
anyway "X2" is supposed to be the game EgoSoft really wanted to make:-

been playing it for the past week and I LOVE this game, at first I was skeptical about the use of a mouse instead of a joystick but me and my friends just plain love this game. I am definetly picking it up once it hits the stores!

If you haven't played the multiplayer with a bunch of friends you havent experienced everything that makes freelancer awsome. It supports up to 128 players on one server. Played it with 4 friends and was the best MP experience I have had in awhile.

I played the demo the graphics look good but not like unreal2 for example

And ffs mouseflight sux it isn't exciting they took the fun outta flying for sure..........

Starlancer was just a dejavu (Wingcommander 4 and half)
Freelancher doesn't come even remoteclose to what I expected at all.

at least they should have made a good joystick support.

I'm not a joystick-addict, so I have no problem with the mouse control, quite the contrary actually! I think the move to a mouse interface for a space sim was pulled off brilliantly, works like a charm and the dogfights are very intense despite the lack of the typical joystick-feeling. It also makes the game much more aproachable to the average gamer, as there's no need to learn ~20 keys and buy a joystick (seriously, how many gamers actually have a joystick these days?).

The graphics could be better in places though, the soon-to-be-2-year-old I-War 2 looks better in comparison most of the time. Some textures are very low-res, the lack of interesting lighting/shading/shadows is a bit on the lame side (everything seems very flat and too evenly lit IMO), geometry and textures on planets and inside stations are sometimes very rough and have little detail. Despite that it still manages to look damn fine overall, especially the character animation, models and the cutscenes look superb IMO (although a few more characters wouldn't have hurt, you keep meeting the same guys over and over in different uniforms, hehe). The story isn't bad either, the voice acting is good, while the quality of the speech seems to suffer from heavy compression somtimes.

Some of the above complaints are probably a compromise to fit the game onto one disk, others maybe a sign of the long development cycle. Not the answer to all space sim fan's prayers, but from what I've played a damn fine game none the less, definitely no dissappointment! :)
