View Full Version : effects in Eternal darkness
Hi everybody,
I'm currently playing with ED and i 'm quite satisfied with the manner the shadows and lightning effects are managed in this game. For example, when you switch on a light, shadows are reflected on the ground and the wall.
I wanted to know if we can say these are "advanced" effects ? (did the dev. have to use T&L for example ?)
If i have no doubt the Xbox could easily handle this kind of stuff, i wonder if the PS2 could deal with these ??
cheers guys !

Well, Silent Hill 2 on PS2 has more advanced shadowing, and Silent Hill 3 even improves upon it quite a bit.

Would SH not exist, you would be a pretty depressive guy, considering how many times you have to cite them ;)
SH3 is not even here.
ED is doing quite a lot of things right at 60fps. Texturing is very high quality. I like the lighting, I think the poster refer to the chapter with the black guy (you can have a flash light on the shoulder, it is a very nice effect).

Yeah it's kinda amazing actually. When I first played Ed on my stand projection tv, I was like "man this game barely looks better than a DC game" which isn't bad but I was expecting a little more from GCN. Then a couple of weeks ago I bought a VGA cable and hooked it up to my computer monitor and ran the game in 16:9 mode and I was like "Daammnnn, this is da sh*ts!". The first few levels of ED aren't as badass as the later levels, trust me on this one. I'm at chapter I think eleven right now. I also agree about the firefighter level is pretty sweet with the flashlight and GOD the TEXTURES!!! :o
I remember a few months ago I was complaining about how ED looked inferior to Tomb Raider on PS2 with regards to shadow maps and such, but man was I wrong. Those Tomb Raider DTL shots look nowhere like the actual in game shots. ED, however, is was very deceiving initially until you get into the later levels where everything really shines. Silicon Knights and Nintendo did an awesome job with this game and I can't wait for their next game. Silky smooth 60 fps and Widescreen in Progressive.... 8)

too bad the first levels aren't that cool looking...
oh well I'll try to finish the game (I mean whole 3 times to get the 'REAL' ending)
Is it hard from time to time or am I unskilled ? ^^

What aspect of the game did you find difficult?
SH3's gameplay appears to be running at 30fps. ED = 60fps, so they're not all that comparable as far as "PS2 vs GCN".

Most of the effects that deal with Lightening and normal lighting are using lightmaps. Lightmaps are predetermined and are not that taxing on a system. The only things that would be taxing is the dynamic lighting (the stuff being generated by your enchanted stuff and your torches etc...)
I personally have to say that Eternal Darkness' lighting needs better dynamic shadows (like Resident Evil, except without the low-res shadows). I can't wait for a sequel, as this game was an N64 conversion so it probably didn't use the Gamecube as much as if it was a GC game to begin with.

Keeping my sanity level up, and some fights.
(btw any roleplayer may see the sanity system comes from Chtulhu and Kult, both pen & paper RPG. Also reminds me the concept of Soul Reaver worlds [spirit and normal, morphing between the two]

Do you know that you can use a recover spell to recover sanity?

Oh ok there's a spell you can cast to replenish the sanity meter. Also the magic meter replenishes itself when you walk or run so all you have to do is walk around then cast a spell to replenish your sanity.

Ingenu-
Playing through on green? It sounds like it. The green path is the hardest in terms of battles and keeping your sanity, blue is the easiest(I've played through it six times now start to finish, twice on each path).
Biggest suggestion I have for making the game easier is to use Shield spell frequently(Red shield, even if you have Manorok), utilize recover spells frequently and use Magik Pool when you get it(particularly Magik Pool under Mantorock if you have it, you are a nigh demi god with it).

I'm indeed playing in green ^^
maybe I should try again with another color.
on the other hand, if I finish it in green I'll have done the hardest...
