A great Nov for everyone indeed. The guys from THQ and EA look like asses now though. The GC has caught up with the XB (Metroid and Mario Prty 4 as catalysts). Does'nt look like the GCN is "loosing traction" to me. GBA and PS2 still kicking ass though. GCN sold more software than XB..that's new.
i Honestly doubt MP will keep up nintendo's sales though. After christmas they'll all go down. Plus they aren't counting xbox live as software.

Well, over the past few months the Cube certainly has been losing out against Xbox in the West. Xbox, of course, is as good as dead in Japan but this is not a market Western publishers are particularly concerned about.
Even if Xbox and Cube are tied in the US in November, Xbox has probably sold more in Europe. Still, it's not long ago they were spelling doom for Xbox in Europe because of piss-poor sales so obviously such statements should be taken with a grain of salt.

even the playstation had lagging sales at first. It pulled out of it over time. I'd really like to know how many units of Xbox Live! were sold. I'd imagine its close to around 200,000 just for november. I would love to see decembers sales.

I am kind of stuck on whether it should be deemed software or an accessory.
I agree with whomever in the other thread saying that Nintendos absolute bestest bestest months are the Christmas season (as are Sony and MSs, but not as lopsided).
I dont think Nintendo's sales will fall off as sharply as others think though, as Zelda is right around the corner.
Overall, I think MS did nobly considering the lack of big name franchises (no Halo, no DoA, etc). The bundles are what saved their butts this holiday imo, Splinter Cell isnt enough in the face of GTA and Metroid.
Next year MS will shine with Halo 2 and Ninja Gaiden though...
In short: Any sales generated for MS were due to the bundle, as their software offering was pretty blah. Nintendo did as expected, and Sony continues to make like an 800lb Gorilla.
I am surprised that no one mentioned the Xbox Live sales though.
I wonder if it was more the holiday season then it was MP that sold the GC.
Legion: MS already announced that in the first week, XBL hit 150k subscribers.

Xbox live sales were mentioned, when Nintendo stated MP was selling double what XBox live was selling, and I recall everyone bitching about how Xbox live isnt software, so he shouldnt compare....
Xbox live is only a service, it has to be used with software...kind of like Ghost Recon, UC, and Mech Assault, and those are all listed(the ones that sold worth a crap)
Yea i talked about how dependent nintendo is on the holidays because the fan base is mostly kids , who really don't have a source of income and get most games for birthdays and x mass. My little cousin is getting 5 game cube games , which is 3 more than he got for the rest of the year , excluding his birthday. He is also 7 years old. Also zelda is coming out . I have friends that will be buying systems for that. I had a few friends that bought a system for metriod. The gamecube has a good stream of fun , high quality games coming out. Thats what matters imho.
I seem to remember some people thinking Splinter Cell would out sell Metroid Prime.. :oops:
I wonder were these latest sales puts total U.S numbers now?
Even if Xbox and Cube are tied in the US in November, Xbox has probably sold more in Europe.
I doubt it, last real numbers I saw showed GC well ahead. Last I heard they were now equal in Europe, but I didn't actually see any link to the numbers.

Teasy:
> XBox may have caught up but not gone ahead AFAICS
I meant that it has probably outsold Cube for the last couple of months, not overall (although it might, I dunno). Some ppl are very shortsighted and have bad memory to boot so if Cube is behind Xbox for a few months then surely it is doomed. Nevermind the first 6 months were Xbox was performing horribly (in Europe).
Teasy- I know there are a ton of adult nintendo gamers out there. That is why you see the big games and the good games sell alot when they first come out. Thats why zelda will do so well, why res 0 did so well . but honestly , there has got to be half the user base worth of kids . And I'm 90% sure that there are more under 14 year olds that own the cube , than there are that own the ps2 and the xbox. If you don't agree , that is alright . I wont hate you.
Ok, yeah your probably right.

I personally hope all the kiddies have been holding off on a Cube for Christmas. Their parents' money are as good as any others.
cybamerc , I don't believe the sales of the system would be that great , in line with the others yes , but nothing crazy. I expect the software to do alot better than expected though. Did zelda sell almost 1:1 when it came out on the n64... something like 6 million copys ?

Cube may outsell Xbox but not PS2. Nintendo may be the company stigmatized with the kiddy image but in reality kids play GTA3 on their PS2. That's just the way it is. Screw ignorance... I just want Nintendo to rake in teh moneyz. Even if the consoles are only sold to children or parents giving lavish presents that's fine by me. I like kiddy games.
not hardware wise , but most likely software wise , they did it with the n64 they can do it with the gamecube.
Actually I think MS has reason to be dissapointed by these numbers from the NA market, especially after they finally gained ground in Europe lately! They lost their lead over GC (or rather not managed to keep widening the lead) and software sales are weaker than they probably hoped for (okay the lineup wasn't exactly great but decent enough), while GC really saw a decent boost in hard and software sales both!
On the other hand 6 out of GC's top 10 titles are first or second party, most even popular Nintendo franchises. I think even these great sales actually do more to reinforce the feelings that publishers like THQ have voiced - people seem to buy GC for Nintendo first/second party games mostly, which doesn't exactly help making it more attractive to third party developers, you can't seem to predict which games will sell at all. There's also a much sharper fall-off from the best selling to the weaker selling games, or so it appears (would need more than top 10 sales to say for sure). Just a short look at those thrid party games: Harry Potter is doing great and fits right into the (call it a cliché but it certainly seems like it) primary target audience of GC, 007 is doing almost as well as on Xbox (maybe Goldeneye's N64 fame helped a bit?), RE looks to be underperforming for such an highly anticipated and popular franchise while Star Wars is a huge name that will sell decently as long as the game isn't complete crap (though SW games often aren't what they used to be, why had the times of Lucas Arts only releasing high quality titles have to end a couple years ago?).
The real winner continues to be Sony though, just look at those GTA:VC sales! :o
cybamerc , I don't believe the sales of the system would be that great , in line with the others yes , but nothing crazy. I expect the software to do alot better than expected though. Did zelda sell almost 1:1 when it came out on the n64... something like 6 million copys ?
yes, it does sold 6M copies in 2 months (over christmas) worldwide, but it was far from being 1:1.
How many systems where there ? I was under the impession they only sold about 8 million in the usa ? Or was it the wrestling game that sold almost 1:1 ? I'm not to sure it was a few years ago and i've had a lot of alchool to drink since then . :lol:
Oh would you people stop with it already. It's obvious that this isn't like the 16bit "wars" or even the 32/64 bit "wars" of the early to mid 90's in that the market could only support 2 systems at a time (casualties of the Super NES and Genesis heydey were 3DO, Jaguar, and the Phillips system. Casualty of the PS2 and N64 heydey was the Saturn).
This situation is no doubt like the late 70's, early 80's "wars" between Colecovision, Intellivision, Atari, Vectrex, and Odyssey where each system had a good following and each was supported because there were enough people to support them.
I don't consider 40 Million+ PS2's, 8 Million+ GC's and 8 Million+ XBox's to be a failure on anyone's part, and I think it's a testament to the overall strength of the worldwide videogame market.
Frankly I'll be adding 1 to the Xbox total, along with my 1 Gamecube, as soon as I can afford to. So enough with the fanboi bickering about who sold what and all this. Sheesh! :evil: :roll: :-? :x :cry: :( :evil:
now is a good time to buy the system. You get two games with it. Though I hear both systems will drop before summer. Who knows if thats correct.
I think RE0's number are pretty good. These were just the first 12 days of RE0's release. Capcom did'nt start advertising for it till 2 weeks after it released. It's pretty safe to say it'll sell better than REmake did in Japan and the US both. I'll bet December shows RE0 selling even better as well as SC for XB.
Natoma, I agree with your point. This system wars stuff get's old (but it's fun at times too). But yeah, I've said since the very beginning that there is room for ALL three players this generation. If only Sega could have held out huh? nah, it's much better this way. As Nintendo fan I'm prefectly content to see Nintendo become the "Mac" of the console market. If it's a niche machine then oh well it will still rake in millions for Ninty..as will the GBA. but I really dont see that happening. It very well maybe that MS is the "Mac" this go around. And that is ironic considering MS' and IBM's past. But really I see the market just getting soooo big and popular that it gives all three companies a piece of the 10 billion dollar pie. Kind of like GM, Ford and Chrysler. There IS room! And everyone's favorite company should be fine.
Just thought of something by looking at the numbers: Gamecube + GBA = assload of money for Nintendo. They are just fine! Sony's got TV's and videocameras. MS has OS PC market. Ninty's got GBA.
I wish sega held out so i could see my fav games on one system. Now i will have to buy systems I don't want for one or two games . Anyway there is room for 3

Xbox is doing great in Australia though. When I went to buy my PS2, the guy at EB told me he's selling more Xboxes than PS2s during this Christmas season. Mostly because of the Massive Pack.
Also, all the people working at EB/computer stores are wearing Xbox neck tags. Everywhere you go is green. Whomever is incharge of Xbox Australia, he/she should get a raise.

815K units of Super Mario Sunshine and this doesn't include December sales?
Damn.. if that doesn't include SMS-bundle sales.. Mario's done better than I thought.
Johnny Awesome

That means Mario has only sold around:
1.2 million in the US
850,000 in Japan
450,000 (estimate) in Europe
That's only 2.5 million copies, which is far less than I would have expected for Mario. Mario 64 sold 20 million didn't it? At this rate SMS will probably not do better than 5 million. What do you think Ben?

This got me thinking about the wining that THQ was doing about their games not selling on GC. So I took a look at what they released and what I saw was a bunch of games targeted at children. The games were Rugrats, Jimmy Neutron, Hot wheel, Monsters,inc, Rocket power its some nick cartoon, Scooby Doo, Sponge Bob. Then theres WrestlemaniaX8, MX Superfly, Dark Summit, and Tetris. The GC targeted demographic is supposed to be children but the games developed for children barely make it over 10,000 in sales. Is it possible these games are on the wrong system, I believe they would have sold better on the PS2, or even better on the PSX.
Johnny: O-kay? All things considered, I think that 2.5 million is awesome. That's almost as good or better than Halo!
Already! And doesn't that make SMS the top selling GCN title worldwide.. beating out SSBM?

Johnny-
Mario64 sold ~10million. These numbers also don't include any of the bundle packs which probably represented around 1/3 of Nintendo's console sales for the month(that is a complete guess, although I imagine it's slightly conservative). I'd say that Mario was likely around 1.4Million in the US by the end of November, not sure what the bundle situation was like in Japan or Europe although I expect they sold at least another couple hundred thousand units between Europe and Japan(bundles including Mario which aren't counted in soft sales). When December's numbers come in from the US, I would expect Mario will be in the 1.7M-2M range in the US(between bundle sales and soft sales) and should be close to 3.5Million copies sold world wide as of 1/1/3.

SSBM was around 1.8Million units sold by the end of November in the US alone, and it also went platinum in Japan. Mario is likely pst SSBM by now, but it wasn't at the end of November(at least, not unless Mario did a lot better then we expect in Europe).

What do you think Ben?
i don't know if the figures you gave are correct but anyway...
you are comparing less than a year of SMS sales with the sales of SM64 during all the N64 lifespan.
this makes no sense.

The reason I'm doing this is because it's pretty clear that SMS isn't going to have the same shelf-life that Mario64 did. People are already returning it to stores for credit and so on. This will cut into sales.
Ben, I could believe 3 million by the end of 2002, but I still think it's going to have a tough time breaking 5 million. It might though, due to the lack of compelling Cube software.

And several people were returning their SM64 AND their N64 to the store for credit when it was first released. SMS, while it was admittedly not the blockbuster title like SM64 or SMB3, is on track to sell ~4-5 million copies within one year of its release. Most companies would give their left AND right nuts for those kind of figures and brand recognition.

Are you just posting for bashing the cube ?? There are lots of games on the Cube and you know it.

I think I got just about all of them. Some of these I'm not sure if they were released on the other platform or not, but their matches weren't in the top 500 as far as I could see.
This also doesn't really take into account differences in release dates which could make a difference if both were released in Nov, one two weeks after another, or if the title has been available on one console for several months and is at the end of its money making time and on the other it is just bursting onto the scene.
Overall, I think that for the most part, (excluding sports that is), the X box and GC stayed fairly close to one another, or at least with respect to their userbases. Couple of standouts with MK and MOH and Harry Potter but other than that pretty close.
Christ this took a long time to pull together. :oops:
Nice work. Yeah the list looks pretty normal.

Actually, that list confirms that 3rd party software fairs relatively poorly on the Gamecube, expecially bigger titles like Madden, NFL2K3, Timeplitters 2, Mortal Kombat, and so on.
There some anomalies like Tony Hawk 3 (because Xbox has 3 Tony Hawk games) and Harry Potter (kiddie platformer), but for the most part this list merely confirms that 3rd party software doesn't do as well on the Gamecube as it does on Xbox. This will probably affect development on the platform somewhat. Probably why there aren't any good driving or fighting games on the Cube, for instance.
U.S userbase (rough estimate):
XBox = 5 million
GameCube = 4.2 million
XBox has a 19% larger userbase then GameCube.
Total sales from those third party games:
XBox = 2772913
GameCube = 2177121
XBox has 21% larger numbers then GameCube.
Average number of multi-platform games owned by both consoles usersbase (only based on the top 500 for 2002 obviously):
XBox = 0.55 per user
GameCube = 0.51 per user
WOW!.. the difference is huge right? ;)

Johnny-
The reason I'm doing this is because it's pretty clear that SMS isn't going to have the same shelf-life that Mario64 did. People are already returning it to stores for credit and so on. This will cut into sales.
The major factor cutting in to sales is going to be the bundle package. As long as the bundle package keeps going, I would expect SMS to easily surpass SM64's sales.
Ben, I could believe 3 million by the end of 2002, but I still think it's going to have a tough time breaking 5 million. It might though, due to the lack of compelling Cube software.
The current issue of EGM has a poll on which platform had the best games in 2002(page 73). GBA has 1%, XBox 10%, PS2 24% and GameCube 65%. That was an online poll taken from Gamers.com.
I'm not sure what you mean by lack of compelling software, for who exactly? The older demographic? ED, RE, RE0, TS2, MK:DA, 007 and MOH that are out now with SplinterCell, TrueCrime and Killer07 right around the corner(to list a few that either are held in high regard or look like they will be). I don't think anyone would argue against that they have plenty of titles covering a wider audience. Which demographic are they missing compelling titles for? They have plenty of sports titles, titles aimed squarely at the older demographic and plenty of titles for the younger audience(Harry Potter etc). Just looking at the next few months they have FZero, OoT, Celda and SkiesOfArcadia coming. I'm not seeing the lack of compelling software. At this point they should have roughly half a dozen million unit sold titles world wide(SSBM, SMS, AC, SFA, Sonic, Metroid).
Actually, that list confirms that 3rd party software fairs relatively poorly on the Gamecube, expecially bigger titles like Madden, NFL2K3, Timeplitters 2, Mortal Kombat, and so on.

This will probably affect development on the platform somewhat. Probably why there aren't any good driving or fighting games on the Cube, for instance.
Taking them in order, Madden has grossed ~$5Million on the Cube, NFL2K3 ~$1.2Million, TS2 ~$3.9Million, MK:DA ~$2.7Million- which one do you think didn't turn a profit? Considering they are all ports, it's likely all of them made significant profit for the publishers. Given the reduced investment in time and resources a port takes, I don't see why you would assume that those titles spell trouble for Cube third party support. If you look at other titles like the two Bond games and Turok you see that third party titles aimed at an older demographic can sell on pretty much equal footing with their XBox counterparts.

Thanks for breaking it down like that, much appreciated.
Do you guys know how much Nintendo made off of Mario 64 sales in June 02 alone? It was over $270,000. For June alone! Mario 64! This is how Nintendo makes it. They may not have TV's, Camcorders and OS'..but they've got some games.
