View Full Version : 9700 pro , can new drivers boost the speed
I really don't have the knowledge most of you have here. So what I would like to know well if it could be answered . But anyway , Can a driver pull an nvidia on the r300. Knocking performance up buy at least another 15% over what we have now or more ? Or is the card living up to its specs and there is no more speed left to get out of it ? I'm wondering if ati will have anything other than the r350 to throw at nvidia. Thanks (Oh i hope this is in the right forum.)

To answer that question I think all you need to do is look at Daves 8500 review and factor in the lack of the API the 9700 was designed around...

Yes i see the increase... but i allso owned the 8500 and I remember how bad the drivers were. The drivers the 9700 launched with are imho better than the last set of drivers i used for my 8500 , which was in august.

Yep the 8500 drivers were not the best but I think some hardware issues caused some of that (vertex shader rumors I heard of)..anyhow..
IMO I think ATI can get alot more performance out of their card with
1)More optimizations
2)Developer Support
3)It would be nice to see Dx9 final, the key IMO to getting better speed.

Not disagreeing with you, but why? Or how? How can an API make current games slower faster on new hardware? Does that mean DX9 could slow DX8 cards for example?
I think someone from these boards contested this argument but I would love to see this can of worms opened up again before DX9 is released :)
