Mitarai has said he would like to have a SED TV on the market by spring of 2006. The first set will be a 55-inch model, putting it in direct competition with plasma and to a certain extent LCD sets, which are encroaching into the 50-plus range.

Sounds too expensive for my blood right now :) Ah well.

I'm pretty chuffed about this technology, let's hope it pans out and can compete with the LCD panels down the line price-wise.

I'm wondering about the power useage of SED screens, and any possible static electricity issues/gamma-ray emissions from it... I was glad to be rid of all that crap when I switched from CRT to LCD earlier this year.

Well, we don't want a bunch of people turning into the Hulk, now do we?

SED is essentially just a lot of tiny LEDs, no? I wouldn't think it would be shooting out all kinds of crazy stuff like CRTs do, but who knows.

More like lots of tiny CRTs actually.

I'm pretty sure that they have similarly low emissions and power consumption as LCDs though.

Interesting review. (http://www.behardware.com/articles/593-1/close-encounters-of-the-third-kind-sed.html)
