View Full Version : AF on R300 = lesser IQ in UT2003?

Explanation: Left half was rendered by R9000 and the other one by R9700pro, both with the same Level of AF enabled. Though you might see a noticeable difference on the floor right and left of the imaginary yellow line. Quite a bit more prominent the differences are visible on the foot of the ancient egyptian statue. Inside the yellow box i have copied the corresponding part of the image from the R9000pro.

It seems like R300 does not use detail-texturing in UT2003 or does not apply texture filtering properly as soon as AF is enabled. Quite visibly if you compare the rendered images side by side, but easily to overlook if you do a mere "bench-job" as a reviewer.
Originally i found it to be a general Bug with Catalyst 2.4 on R9000/R9700pro but the recently leaked 6218-drivers from Sapphire-Tech fixed the issue on my R9000Pro, but obvisously not on a R300, as Exxtreme pointed me at.

Any ideas as to how this could be solved (or even better: what is causing this) would be as welcome as any hint as to why i might be a stupid n00b and did something wrong :)

P.S.:
(AF was enabled via Control Panel and as you can see on the ground tiles farther away, which are filtered correctly and with a high degree of anisotropy)

Here is the big thread on this issue over at Rage3D:

http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?s=88f05c6152b1f0fa9ea7ba670b5b8085&threadid=33652105

This was my explanation I posted over there on Page 4

I found the Answer, and it is NOT a Cheat IMO

Rather possibly a Bug or Possibly the Nature of LOD and how it works with Anisotropic Filtering

A comparison is in order:

In the UT2003.INI file the Default LOD settings are such:

DetailTexMipBias=0.8
DefaultTexMipBias=-0.5

No AF:
http://www.speedguide.net/~brent/noafloddefault.jpg

16X AF:
http://www.speedguide.net/~brent/16xafloddefault.jpg

As you can see with the positive LOD at 0.8 when AF is enabled the Detailed Textures dissapear

Now with the LOD at:

DetailTexMipBias=0
DefaultTexMipBias=0

or

DetailTexMipBias=-0.8
DefaultTexMipBias=-0.8

No AF:
http://www.speedguide.net/~brent/noaffoot.jpg

16X AF:
http://www.speedguide.net/~brent/16xaffoot.jpg

You can see there is no difference in the Detailed Textures

So, is this a cheat? I think not

Is this a bug? Possibly

Is this just the nature of how LOD and AF interact? Possibly
