okay, it probably isn't, its a geforce

but thats the kind of crap i'm reading on this forum

i'm about to build a new computer, so I came here looking for info on graphics cards, what I found is a lot of bickering and speculation

I haven't yet decided whether to buy a 9700pro, or get a ti4200 and keep the change for a better graphics card 6-12 months down the line

I'm leaning towards getting the 9700pro - I have a feeling the geforcefx will be like the orginal geforce - it'll introduce a whole bunch of new technical features that won't really be implemented until the faster second generation version is out which delivers the performance needed for those features

of course thats speculation

i'm too impatient to wait for the fx to come out (unless benchmarks turn up real soon which show a decisive advantage)

the other factor is that we're all speculating on the performance of these cards in doom III. I must confess, i'm not actually all that excited about doom III, the technology is great sure, but what about the game? it was the same with quake3, great tech, but the great games were built by thirdparties using that great tech (moh, sof2, jedi knight 2) - by the time the other games built on doom III tech are out, there will definitely be speedier versions of the next gen products - I think i'll try and make do with a 9700 pro until that happens

(note, this isn't an enticement for you all to have another nvidia vs ATi argument, they're just graphics card companies - everyone should buy cards based on performance/price, not based on the name of the company producing them)

there, i've had my rant

Buy the R9700pro, it's as simple as that! :)
Oh, and this thread needs to move...

If running games at 1280x1024 with 6x FSAA and 16x Aniso is fine by you then go for the 9700 Pro.

Now if those bastards at ATi would fix their damn drivers I would be a happy man...

TRUFORM sucks, Vsync sucks and in some games there's stuttering.
And oh the absence of AA in some titles and all 16 bit games also sucks badly.

My jaw still drops every time a launch a modern game at 1600x1200 with 6x FSAA and 16x Aniso and still find it smooth as a babys butt. ;) So don't get me wrong it's a great card but there's some sacrifices...

Can't say I had any stability problems though.

Truform is not running in hardware yet
vsync is not Ati's fault, go talk to MS
stuttering? go clean up your computer before blaming Ati or any other GFX card company. how much BS you have running in the background?

without knowing exactly where your cards stutters, there is no way to be able to help you

got some system specs
got some stuttering games
and oh yeah the newest drivers do have a force refresh option for DX and YES IT DOES WORK

wow get a bunch of newbies running a NT based OS (without knowing a thing about services) and automatically blame Ati because something isn't right

NONE of my PCs stutter and they all use ATi cards from a 8MB rage Pro, a Radeon LE at 190/190 and a Radeon 8500 at 290/290

try to set your AGP size to the smallest value possible, that will most likely cure the stuttering you are experiencing

ffs I know what I'm doing, I review videocards for www.nordichardware.se it's not like I'm some lost newbie here.

ATi cards HAVE stuttering problems, it's been thoroughly discussed and there's even a fix via 3D Analyser now.

Vsync works flawlessly on nVidia cards so how can it be MS fault? Perhaps you're confusing it with the refreshrate? EDIT: Yes you are, so who's the noob in here, at least I can tell the difference between "refreshrate" and "vsync".

I know how to configure NT-based OSes, I have 7 services running automatically on my ghost image of XP for reviews. That about the lowest you can go before you destroy basic functionality.
I have NO autostart objects ANYWHERE on my computers whatsoever.
(And yeah I have a ghost image with a Generic VGA driver installed so it's not leftover drivers causing anything.)

Talk about being presumptious

BTW I think it's great that you don't have any problems with stuttering but that doesn't make stuttering dissapear for others.
I have a room filled of videocards and I can tell you that the only cards that have pronounced stuttering are those whos boxes are fitted with a sticker that says either "Built By ATi" or "Powered By ATi"...

So please if you wouldn't mind wasting space here perhaps we could move along?

well you need to post what stutters and when but obviously you did not bother to provide any examples.

Vsync not working

funny how I set it to 75 and it stays there as for games are you talking about tearing?

if that is the case it happens every once in a while but it is not as drastic as you make it to be.

I have seen tearing on very video card including Nvidia's

Some examples

Rendition Vertite 2100
Savage 3D
Savage 4
Savage 2000
Radeon
GF2MX 64MB
Radeon 8500

since i use a KVM switch I have to set the drivers NOT to use DDC information and I set the max res and refresh rates. This is due to the fact that if the KMV is set to the other PC while one is booting then I have refresh rate problems again I say talk to MS

I know why my stuff does not stutter

1. NO VIA POS hardware in my machines. VIA past offerings really do not inspire much hope (PCI bus saturation, poor AGP implimentation, poor Memory Overhead)

Intel 440BX on seattle-2
Intel 440ZX on Intel 440ZX desktop board
SiS 735 on ECS K7S5A
SiS 745 on ECS K7S6A

maybe you need to take a closer look at your system. But more importantly provide details about what stutters with what card, drivers used, system specs well you get the idea right?

I sold my Asus GF3 Deluxe and I am buying a Ti4200 64MB next month. I will wait to see what happens during 2003.

Anyway we will need some very fast CPU and lots of main memory with next generation games.

"well you need to post what stutters and when but obviously you did not bother to provide any examples."

Why do I need to do that?
Because you don't belive me? Sorry I won't bother with that.
Because you think you can help me? With problems that the ATi techs that I have contact with on a daily basis can't help me with?

Vsync not working:
It looses sync, for most part it will stay synced at 85 fps but every now and then it looses sync and I get an fps of 132 or 96 or something.
No non-Ati card I've used does that.
Whenevr it happens I get frame skipping. Tearing isn't even really a problem here.

I don't need your support, I have an identical system to the one ATi uses except that I have a slower CPU.

I also have access to various other test rigs and YES teh stutter happens on other rigs too.

Did you not even pay attention to my comments about 3D Analyser?! It's a WELL KNOWN PROBLEM, hello, anyone there? are you listeing, do you comprehend my poor english?

Drop the attitude man, stop trying to make me look like I don't know what I'm talking about when you are the most obviously confused one in here.

Once again YeuEmMaiMai I do not need or want your support, I have more confidence in ATis own techs...
