Dang it, I just found out about this game "GUN" (http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=29672) and I'm starting to get interested in spite of myself....and according to Blue's News it just went gold (http://www.bluesnews.com/cgi-bin/board.pl?action=viewthread&threadid=61832).

Quote from the first link from above:

Gun will be a GTA-style game, set in the West in the 1880s, in cities such as Dodge City and New Mexico's Las Vegas. The murderous 'Dodge City Gang' has been on a rampage and you seek revenge, hunting them down between Indians and Mexican pistoleros. Main mode of transportation is any horse you can find or steal, and of course, Gun will include high speed "horse" pursuits. We recently sat down with Neversoft's President Joel Jewett and here's the result.

The Q&A that follows (http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=29672) is pretty good.

Anyone heard anything about this game yet?

I think I read that it uses some version of the Unreal engine, but not too sure on that since a lot of the screenies I've seen are a pretty mixed batch in terms of quality. Sounds cool if they can pull the open gameplay off, but I'm waiting on reviews before buying. Just like you, right Diggie?

I doubt the horse will be as awesome as Agro.

I'll definately be finding out if the game is good or not before buying it.

While Unreal can do some decently-sized maps, it still pales in comparison to what GTA-SA can do. So here's hoping the engine is up to the task without killing performance.

Finally a nice western game! I've been waiting for one since Outlaws! I wonder why they never made Outlaws 2, it sold very well AFAIK.

Let's hope they'll make an interesting game, that'd be really cool.

EDIT:

Ooohh, the screenies look sweet...

Edit2:
The vid looks very promising as well, I'll be pre-ordering this!!! Here:

I'm a little worried that there isn't a demo and there are pretty much no reviews and it's already on the shelf... :???:

That could be becuase they didn't have the cash or didn't want to pay the cash to sleazy marketing types or large studios. Who is the publisher/distributer. I can't check cause of the firewall nazi's here.

Oh really? When did that stop you? ;)

There's a load of (p)reviews on the net, just do a little search. IGN, Gamespot etc. all have them.

this just release today for pc? or has it been out since sept?

i tried ordering it 2 day from amazon and they projected shipping date at 18-25 nov! so i cancelled and tried eb. one day shipping (waiting on shipping confirmation)..it was a preorder but said nov 9 ships.

saw a program on it on G4 last night. looks acceptable good. not next gen graphics, but i'll take decent gta style gameplay in an older package anyday. over the doom3 simpleton experience.

I wouldn't be hasty about ordering it before the reviews come out. Besides I doubt it is anything like Outlaws except both being western themed. As far as I understand the gameplay is more like GTA games.

Um, Lineage 2 has huge outdoor areas and runs on the Unreal engine. Vanguard will also use the Unreal engine and is supposed to be completely seamless.

Not quite GTA, not quite Mafia either....but I'd compare it to both games.

I'm tentatively very enthused about it, but it does seem a bit short. I played it for about 7 hours last night in a loooong overdue marathon gaming session (for me, I had a full day before I got into the game) that ended at about 3:30am.

It kept me up until 3:30am and I wanted to play more, but I had to go to sleep....that's pretty good.

Problem is according to the games stats I'm about 50% done with the game... :???:

Graphically a mixed bag. The textures are great to horrible, the post-processing effects are pretty good though, and the whole over-all feel of the game's graphics is more than enough to allow you to get good and immersed in the story.

This game has one thing going for it in a big way, you're playing "the good guy" in this one without a doubt. Kind of a refreshing change over GTA and Mafia. (Although in Mafia I felt we were playing a good guy too, just a good guy in bad circumstances with a bit of a moral relativity issue)

The missions are nice and varied, but it's pretty linear. You follow the main plotline but have the option to take on "side-missions" which will increase your player's stats.

Oh, did I mention "quick-draw"? You hit the quick-draw button and you have your six-shooter out and aimed and you get a bit of bullet time to aim and shoot with, me likey-likes!

The camera work is surprisingly good too, with it doing a great job of keeping the action on the screen.

My biggest bitch would be that it is way too kind with aimboxes, I prefer actually having to aim at their heads to get headshots. :(

that's got me all excited digi! mine arrives today...AND i have tomorrow off...sposed to work on my truck...but...

i didn't like mafia...mainly due to save scheme, cops all over me all the time for minor traffic infractions, and the whole ancient scene. i may give it another try later. i did like using my steering wheel and pedals in game kind of

gta's are awesome though. im still playing gta sa pc first time through!

This one has a not-to-bad save system. You can save your game at any time, but if you load that save it'll start you wherever your last mission ended.

Still, most missions are 5-15 minutes long so it works pretty well.

You also can buy/upgrade your weapons which I really like, there is something very satisfying about finding a gun you like and then upgrading the bejeebus out of it and liking it even better.

I'm working on my bow skills now and just got done upgrading mine, it's a fun assassination toy....silent kills.

Oh, and the voice acting is excellent. I'm usually disapointed with voice acting, but not this time. Just enough and old west without being hokey, very fine.

Definately worth checking out.

I don't expect it to be like Outlaws, just missed a nice wild west themed game for ages :)

EDIT: Digi, thanks for the info, I'll definitely go for it!

I love being able to say good things about games, it's a happy.

I gotta go bug Terry to fix the AA with this title, it has that weird depth of field/shader borking the AA up in strange ways.

Not a show-stopper for me though by any means, and I'm an AA whore.

I'm gonna try it out on my son's 6800GT just to compare it and see, after a few family thangs. (Parent teacher conferences today, hurrah. http://www.rage3d.com/board/images/smilies/bleh2.gif )

I'm an idiot, turn off "Full Screen (Scene? The one right above the AA options in-game) Effects" and AA works just fine. :D

BTW-It was my son who suggested it, my eight year old son.

Great while it lasts, but not a long one by any means.

I'm gonna try replaying it tonight to see if it's fun a second time...

To get widescreen in GUN, you'll have to go into the Registry.

Go to Run, type in regedit, hit Okay. Navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Activision/Gun/Settings

Right-click on Resolution, and click Modify. Set the resolution to whatever you want.

However, I'm pretty sure this doesn't affect the aspect ratio. Here's a screenshot between 1280x1024 and 1680x1050, resized for easy comparison:

1280x1024
http://goodblimey.com/images/uploads/gun.png

1680x1050
http://goodblimey.com/images/uploads/gun-wide.png

Looks stretched to me though. The guy is wider, and the map is also. Devs need to stop being so lazy. The Xbox version has WS, its pure laziness that the PC version doesnt.

edit, I cant seem to get it to change my controls.. whenever I click the action (say forward) with my mouse, it gives the mouse as the movement. In short, it doesnt let me pick the button for any action. Am I missing something...

i didn't like it. especially FOV when it goes 1st person. i get disoriented...either that or 1st person camera is wacked somewhat.

actually i'd rate this as another half assed US dev effort. small maps, very little to interact with (ala GTA style), collision detecion not too hot sometimes. cliched writing of the crappy wild western movies type. nothing really entertaining. waves of NME's charging as opposed to strategic battles (so far anyway)...meh...im not impressed. it doesn't come close to halflife1 or postal2 much less gta

and the FAKE quicksave is annoying. if you quit in a mission you go back to beginning no matter where you saved or how many waypoints (retry start points you've crossed)
